As an aside, I will not punish anyone or enforce any rules against the posting of PMs sent to/by you.
Can this include Skype massages?
I don't really consider private messages "private". I consider them "direct messages", as in a mod will more likely look in their inbox for my cries of distress than scouring the forums.
Are there people who have cussed out mods in private messages?
Das Bad? The Bath?
I've been spending the last eight months, thinking all love ever does is break, and burn, and end. But on a Wednesday, in a café, I watched it begin again.
I am against this. It could be embarrassing. If they are a new member we should avoid that, and if they are a older respected member they deserve things to remain private as well.
I disapprove.
Private messages = Private.
As such it would be up to the individuals involved in the PMs to decide what to do with their PMs
I'm in the camp that is against posting PMs publicly. Unless the other person expressly consents, it should go with FM rules - don't post 'em where everyone can see.
So...people would actually have to be polite and respectful in their PMs or be embarrassed? I call it being accountable for what you send to other people. If you can't be respectful enough that you would not be embarrassed if the message was public you should not be sending the message. That said there are limitations in information that relates to an individual's private off-forum life or are considered confidential for other reasons.

I believe the reciever of a PM is free to do what they wish with it, including publish it.
Unless of course, the pmer says in their PM to not share the information.

You can be embarrassed by having something entirely polite published publicly. If I had, say, a personal message about my real life published publicly on the forums, I would be rather annoyed.
Would you want every message you sent me to be published publicly? Kind of defeats the point of PRIVATE messages when they get posted in GD.
I like it cus it is funny but I dislike how people (probably me) would just edit what is said in the pm and make them look stupider and then they would have a long process to show that its not what they said.
Also is this only for mods or can I make people look stupid also?
Where is my PM??
Spoiler : Forum Mafia :
As I've said, I'm leaving it up to the individual to determine whether or not it is ethical for them to reveal PMs, but I will not take action against anyone who does so.
I send stupid PM's to raptor all the time.
im okay with raptor revealing stupid pms. we all need something to laugh at
Spoiler : Forum Mafia :
In many cases there's probably a reason why those messages were sent to one person only and they really aren't anyone else's business.
I voted against publication.

private messages
Private messages are between two people, if either of the two people wishes to make the message public it should be perfectly acceptable.

The issue is that the messages weren't sent assuming that their contents could be made public on a whim. PM implies privacy, or at least discretion. If there's a good reason to reveal information to people to which it has relevance an exception could be made, but public posting on the forums is taking it a step too far. Especially if it has no other purpose than to laugh at each other.

Well raptor should have the right to do with what people send him as he please. They did send it, so the message is no longer in their hands.
It would, however, be respectful of raptor to not publicly announce Pms that specificly request not to be made public. But that is at the whim of raptor.
If someone specifically asked for a communication to remain private I'd honor it. I also strip private information even when not requested.
Actually it's more me being sick of being sent PMs by people who seek only to do harm to myself, other staff or more rarely a normal forum member. These individuals also tend to portray themselves as if they're either a) highly respected or b) hold a great deal of sway in the community.

At the risk of sounding elitist, I don't think that a moral imbalance was caused by Raptor revealing the PMs that he did, given their contents.
I'm going to share my role card PM with everyone!

Is not!
I would suggest we make the rule that one must give consent for information to be shown, instead of having to request it not be shown. Rap', if anyone is getting personal attacks or aggression from people they should report it. That is public in that the mod staff gets to see it, and can watch for the person to determine if they are someone that deserves the protection our presence should provide. I have received a minor amount of hate messages. They are private, and I find no reason to make them public in a fashion such as this.
CJ was taken down because of personal attacks getting out of hand, I simply find that this is stepping toward allowing for private things to be made public and mocked- something that could get out of hand easily. I, Slaol, was infracted for making a hate thread about Slaol. But it isn't wrong to make a thread mocking something someone said? Why is this version of a hate/mockery thread acceptable?

Name and shame to prevent this?
Or to make fun of those who sent this?

Circlejerk was shutdown because people went hunting for IRL identities to harass and bully specific people, we're talking strictly on-forums here. As I've made clear to at least one staff member already this week, our roles end the moment communications leave this forum or the associated games/servers. It becomes a different matter entirely then.
I should also note that technically speaking no communications with staff are "private" unless the receiving staff member specifically finds a reason to keep the messages so. Communications with individual staff members often get shared with the entire team. I can't give any numbers without checking the entire staff's inboxes (which I won't do even if I had the ability to) but generally anything relevant is shared.
