I bought the original with two friends. We agreed to each take a different starter. They got charmander and squirtle, so I was left with a released bulbasaur and a new friend in pidgey. Best damn pidgey I ever trained though.

This isnt true. You need bulbasuar if you want to sweep the game with charmander. When you run out of PP during the Elite 4, you have to switch out to bulbasaur to be PP item whore, before switching back in to do the fighting with a real pokemon aka charizard or blastoise.
