    Colleges

So I leave for a few days and look what happens.

I took the PSAT in September. The College Board sent out my scores to colleges and I'v been emailed by several recruiters so far.

My question to you is what College did you attend? What did you major/going to major in? Any minors? Was it worth it?

Do you have any tips for applying for scholarships or grants?

I'v gotten emails from Drexler, TCU, ACU, and Missouri S&T.

    Re: Colleges

College is definitely worth it. The experience alone has been just a whole new world. Not even mentioning the amount of knowledge that can be learned. you feel like you are taking the same classes. You have been for the last 4 years at first, math, English and so on, but it's always with actually new information which is just an invigorating feeling to actually be taught something in school for once.
The only tip I can give you for applying for scholarships is to just keep applying. Because it is more likely you won't get one than will.

    Re: Colleges

Don't go to a college that you didn't apply for first. Apply for AT LEAST 5. One or two that you think are out of reach, two that aren't too prestigious that you think you would like to go if you could and then finally, whatever is the best state school.

Always apply to the good state schools if you have them. You're pretty much guaranteed an in and the tuition will usually be a lot less than ANYTHING out of state.

Apply for federal aid. Always take grants and be careful about loans.

    Both.

Unless you're like clearly a cut above the rest you're definitely not going to get "recruited" by top schools. Even then it's still not that likely. They know you're going to come to them. I was accepted to Purdue. I had to go seek them out.

You MIGHT get "recruited" by a decent state school. None of the state schools in my state tried to recruit me though. I would say generally do not accept invitations from places that mail you. Again, most decent colleges know you're going to come to them.

That's quite the condescending talk for someone with only an 1890 on the SAT. I'm sure Appley has a perfectly good chance of qualifying for National Merit Semifinalist. The required score is usually around 213, which isn't that bad, especially for people who are planning on going into engineering, like Appley.

All I have to say is be prepared for floods of mail from colleges that you don't really want to attend. There is an inverse correlation between how much a college wants you to attend and how much you should want to attend that college.

All I am saying is that you have to be really smart to get the national merit and only 1-3 kids in schools of 3,000 get it so statistically he won't.
Next question what did you get on your SAT Glip and what prestigous college are you thinking of going to?

2280. Which, to some people in my classes, isn't that great. Also, 48 kids from my school of ~4,400 qualified for national merit semi-finalist last year, including me.

And I can't get into any prestigious colleges because my GPA is horrible because I never got the work done for my classes. I'm currently hoping that Purdue lets me into their engineering program. I don't have much hope.

P.S.: I do solemnly swear that the above is 100% truth. I am not lying, Minty

Unless you're going to an Ivy league school... Your college choice is only really going to impact the first job you get. After that, people care about experience more than where your degree is from. So tour the campuses, and go somewhere you like.

    Do NOT go out-of-state.

https://www.fastweb.com/ Is a legit scholarship website. Apply for each and every scholarship you possibly can. This is my biggest regret. It doesn't matter if you're a white, middle-class, whatever and think you can't qualify for them. There are scholarships out there for every demographic. Write essays until your fingers bleed. You won't get most of them, but the ones you do get will be worth it.

As for major... I knew in highschool that I was drawn toward Biology, so I went that route. If you have a subject you excel at or enjoy, go for that. Many Freshman come in 'undecided' though. Colleges will require you to take courses from a variety of areas anyway, so if you use your first semester to take an intro course from 5 different subjects, it won't be a complete waste of time. Then you can use those intro courses to gauge what you'd like to pursue.
