A Little Problem with the Votes

It has come to my attention that most people think they can control the public vote by saying "Guilty" or "Innocent" out loud. I think this is wrong on more than one level. This is a democratic vote. Don't try to make people say something they don't mean. Let them decide.

What I mean is that if people want to vote differently, then let them. Just give your reasoning and that will be fine. Don't punish people for giving the wrong vote. There are no wrong votes.

I can't stress that enough. Thank you for taking the time to read this little complaint.

Whenever I am mafia and I'm being trialed I write "INNOCENT" and "GUILTY VOTERS ARE MAFIA"

It always get me the votes of people who don't follow the game.

B) There are totally wrong votes. When a towny gets lynched when scum don't have majority, it's because someone voted incorrectly.

C) If you say that you shouldn't punish people for voting wrong, then you take away a vital part of scumhunting. So you're saying that when the GF gets lynched and EVERYONE votes guilty except for two people, I shouldn't think that they're the other two mafia members?

This is also the theme in the real word. One has the right to influence. One has every right to speak their mind and even change the mind of others.

Ask the the jury of a court. When fact and lies have been presented, it is the job of the jury to seperate fact or fiction amongst themselves and come to a conclusion. They don't sit and hide their votes from other whose goal is all the same...guilty the guilty and inno the innoncent. Sometimes it takes a guy or two to share their thoughts and persuade others. Now granted in mafia you only get 10-15 seconds to reach a verdict in thus results in people shouting GUILTY or INNO.

I am a smart enough player to know which side I want despite what is shouted amongst chat. Some need persuasion...some already stand firm with their belief. Your vote is your vote...EVEN if you are unsure and you don't feel right voting wi, you reserve the right to abstain.

If this was like...trivia or a public quiz...then yes, no one should shout the correct (or incorrect) answer out loud, thus when there is a right or wrong answer.

The idea of influence has been around for an enternity.

In what sense that stating whom you are voting for and attempting to influence others to vote like you is against the idea of democracy? You might want to explain how it is wrong more than one level. Otherwise, I'll assume that you do not understand democracy.

Nobody is forcing anyone to. The spineless lemmings decide to follow. It's still a decision.

Of course we let them vote differently. We punish/lynch/kill those people because we are assuming they are voting "correctly".

If I'm working through evidence/role list, then I might be tempted to shout inno or guilty if I've come to a conclusion one way or another, especially if I'm a leader role for the town such as Sheriff. I may have changed my mind after the person was put on trial, or some other guy put someone up when I didn't have leads, and in the time between trial I realized such a claim wasn't possible.

Besides, freedom of speech is entirely democratic.

Heres my overall thought on the matter. i feel that if you are NOT sure, then you should abstain UNLESS significant evidence is provided. in which case may require a deadlock inno and another trial to accomplish. i believe not only are the folks who are talking during voting processes are performing a necessary function, but it is the DUTY of some players as a role function (be it invest/sheriff/detect or some form of mafia or cultist) to FIGHT LIKE HELL to inno a fellow member of the team. sure, it can be chaotic, however in that chaos you can find small shreds of info in the logs later on. (this has saved my hide on multiple occasions)

in conclusion, i dont see a transgression of democracy or even a problem here, i infact see a potential goldmine of information.

My general rule is that if you're voting to put a person up on trial, then you should basically consider that a guilty vote, as it may be difficult to get a person off the stand once put up. This is because if a person provides evidence that creates reasonable doubt, a lot of Townies simply won't vote at all out of worry of making the wrong decisions, while the Evil roles are likely to vote Guilty. And then they die and are revealed to be town. The people who put them up on trial but then were too pansy to vote either way are just as responsible for their death as the Evil roles.
