Hey guys, I have a brand-new PS3 that has never been opened, and I wanted to sell it. I actually got it as a prize in an arcade.

I'm looking for eBay prices for it: about $280 USD. From retail, you save $20, of course, and an additional ~$30 USD from taxes. I can show Rev a copy of the receipt in case anyone is wondering about its legitimacy.

Refer to your tracking number. Current status: "Payment of charges - Item being held, addressee being notified." It's been in customs for a week and waiting for your response upon being notified for another week. You can try contacting Royal Mail, as it's likely being held at your local post office.

Britain's import/international package policy states that the VAT must be paid by the recipient and this package must be confirmed by the recipient. The only way to do this is to contact the post office. You can probably get it with a single phone call. Refer to the tracking number in your PM.

The package is the responsibility of the postal service once it has been shipped. The package IS insured and has a return receipt.


P.S. Services like UPS handle this process for you, but cost a ton of money. This was shipped via USPS, which falls under the normal international rules.

Well, ultimately you must do something, because in order to get a refund from any source, the seller must receive the item back.

Also, you'd be talking to the post officer, not the customs guy. If memory serves, you implied that you're comfortable around post officers :P

Look, you should have gotten a letter or phone call from the post office about this. If you received absolutely nothing, something might have gone wrong in the system.

There can be a quick and full refund if the item is lost or stolen from the system.

Procyon can't legally pay the VAT. First of all, they decide the fees after the item arrives in your country.

I'm not sure how or why you were completely ignorant of possible import duties. I didn't even know what VAT was prior to this transaction, and was not notified at any time during shipping about it (because it's an issue with the receiving country and the recipient). Additionally, the return amount will be minus any shipping fees (you did not follow the terms of this agreement).

Objectively, neglecting to factor in the VAT cost is both of your guys' faults, and to a lesser extent, mine. However, the greater fault in this case is the buyer, Plato, because the VAT is in your country and not ours.

Ideally, I want this to be as you say: the total cost including shipping and duties made clear. However, I'm new to brokerage so I didn't think to enforce a tax estimation, since nobody else seems to do it.

By policy, you should get the refund. Once he has it back you would be credited the amount you paid for it, minus shipping.

Ultimately though it's up to him to take or reject your request.


Also, I didn't mean offense with saying the UK is "your" country. It's a country you have lived in, and France definitely has the VAT too, though, so the point still stands.

Regardless of whether I need the money or not, I wouldn't want you to be upset or disappointed because of what happened, and would return the money to you simply out of respect. I understand you don't need money, and are doing this simply out of principle, but the money that was requested from you doesn't profit me in any way.

Overall, I'm disappointed, because it's throwing money in the trash, regardless of whose it was. They may force me to pay a double VAT for the item to be imported and exported from the UK, in addition to return shipping fees, totaling ~£119 or ~$194. I could sell it on eBay for ~£174 or ~$285 USD, but, after everything, a lot of money would be wasted. This may or may not be the case, as I've never shipped an item internationally before, and don't have much knowledge regarding customs fees.

I'm sorry for upsetting you and being dishonest by not telling you the complete cost of the item. In the future, if I do ship something internationally, I will assess any possible fees that may be charged.
