There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers.

and yes you may keep doing whatever you're doing, may the LORD have mercy upon thy souls

steve jobs isn't harmful to society. he's fucking dead. and bill gates is basically a saint. find other strawman "good billionaire" examples please.

Uh, what? Are you suggesting he was harmful while he was still alive?
Its also not a strawman. The burden of proof is on the prosecution. When someone gives a generalizing claim, a counter-example is an easy refutation of that claim. It doesnt refute the possibility that *generally* rich people are bad for society, however, looking at it objectively, it has not actually been proven (by Frost) that the rich are harmful to society, merely asserted.
And in fact, in light of all of the shit that we have today, I’d say the assertion is actually wrong. Poor people didn’t build up today’s society.
With covid I'd say society is very well much held up by poor people.
How did you arrive at that conclusion?
I see poor people being the most affected by covid bc it means they cannot work / have less money due to covid and economic recessions (crises of any kind, really) hit the poor the hardest but that doesn’t mean they’re ‘holding up’ today’s society by any means. The poor are also not the ones who made MRi, CT scans, cars, lamps, computers, modern medicine and so on.
Oh no. I'm sure it's the rich people sat in the factory's building the lamps and the scanners. Definitely got Elon Musk soldering your x570 motherboard.
I'm sure everything will be contained to function if the 1% where the only ones that remained in work.
People like 50 cent, who was unhappy about having to pay more tax. Do they forget who buys their shit?
You might have a point overall but all the examples you listed are the dumbest fucking examples you could have used, because every single one was independently invented by random scientists, researchers, and engineers, all of whom probably weren't that wealthy (except potentially Charles Babbage who invented the computer).
Billionnaires aren't bad as individuals. Many seem like pleasant people. Most are pleasant people. But the existence of people with so much concentrated wealth and power has a destabilizing effect on society. Sometimes, when someone becomes a billionaire, they act like Bill Gates. That's great. Sometimes, however, they choose to act like Murdoch - trying to buy up all of UK media in some pathological quest to control everything British people see. Or they act like Bloomberg, who came very close to buying the position of democratic candidate in the US primary this year and shamelessly uses his wealth to sway congress towards his preferred policies.
Billionnaires and the major shareholders certainly play a key role in most social advancements. But that's also inevitable because of how ubiquitous their power is. You don't really hear people heaping praise on the aristocracy for kickstarting the age of enlightenment and exploration through their patronage, because there was literally noone else who could have done such a thing at the time.
People who bring up Bill Gates every time you try to talk about that problematic wealth concentration is like people who bring up, I don't bloody know, Cyrus the Great every time you try to criticize autocracy or empires. It's kind of missing the point lol.
Why do you think governments are literally throwing cash at poor people across the world? It's very naïve to think it's solely because they are "on tough times". These are the people who will actually get out and spend that money and put it into circulation. Now that they are being decimated by covid the economy naturally gets rolled with them. The last financial crisis our government avoided the recession unlike many other countries by doing cash injections into poor peoples pockets. Literally avoided a recession by doing it. What does that tell you? When the poor are confident to spend everything is good, if they aren't or can't then shits fucked. Seeing the financial status of countries where low wage jobs have been smashed should be a raging clue that these jobs and the people are actually very damn essential to maintaining society as it is. I work as the stock controller for a company and the amount of products that are on back order (basically a vague "it comes when it comes") is unprecedented. Warehouses cannot keep up due to workers being sick and covid restrictions hampering productivity.
You're forgetting that nothing would function either if the rich disappeared tomorrow with nobody to replace them.
Elon Musk may not have soldered it but he organized the production process, he hired the people to design them, hired managers to 'manage' (kek) everything... I mean, its not like the rich just stand around all day doing nothing ^^ Musk works 100 hour weeks.
I don't really think I'm supporting a necessarily right point of view as much as I am attacking a really far-left point of view lol.
But wanting the insanely rich to give a more significant part (which means >0.1 %...) of their money to the poor isn't "really far-left" unless you live in "capitalist America" as opposed to "soviet Russia" in a world where a national healthcare system parallel to the private one is considered as FAR LEFT COMMUNISM! :P
I mean, you go tell the dude working 100 hours he should give up his wealth for people hes never met and see how that works.
That being said that point was not brought up in this thread.

Not "give up his wealth"... but like, just imagine billionaires of the world would give 5 % of their profits to people who have no money. Poverty would be something really hard to achieve XD. Now I get that this is not that simple in reality, but the idea isn't to say "everyone should be equally rich" (that's far left and literally communist). It's just something like that. And don't tell me that a billionaire giving 5 % of his profits would demolish his career or the economy xD
It probably wouldn't, although I don't think that people should be expected to do that :P We should thank the ones who do because I think that's going above and beyond in some sense, its their money, they dont need to share it with anyone.
Again, sort of beyond the point that was raised though. I'm not saying that this line of thinking is far left and wasn't raelly what I was arguing against, more that thinking that all billionaires are bad is.
@Oberon
Why the fuck are you unironically arguing for trump in a satirical Bruno thread
Uh, I am not? Have you actually read the thread? Not once was the name ‘Trump’ uttered
Not sure why you’d bring Trump up in this context as he doesn’t really have anything to do with what was discussed apart from being a rich person, but I dont see you giving him as an example of a bad rich person.
