i didn't really like dota for wc3 all too much, never really got into it. played LoL for a while, had fun with that.

but damn, i really have a hard time not loving this game. its leik league of legends, except significantly more awesome. the gameplay is more fast paced and there is more room for aggression. i feel like the game mechanics in general lend themselves more to skill, in comparison to LoL, last hitting is harder and being caught out of position is far more punishing. I didn't really think that there would be a huge difference in skill requirement between the two, but goddamn there is. spells are far more tactical in that you run out of mana, which is very nice, and it seems like most heroes lack the sustain that half the characters of league had.

and damn, the game is fun.

i think i've played TF2 like twice in my lifetime, so i highly doubt that you've ever played against me. i dont know of any other people who go by fernsauce though. pretty sure i am the one and only, if you google my name it literally comes up all me everywhere oh god.

can't really comment on matchmaking, theres like a maximum of around 5k people on the game at any time (not just in queue) so its hard to make judgements. it does seem to work fairly well.

because sas and capitaliar are whores and aren't even on all the time, and the guy i usually play with has finals this week for god knows what fucking reason. also because there have been several waves of invites recently so at least some people here should have theoretically gotten them.

I probably wouldn't have gotten that many kills if my team wasn't retarded, but still, hilarious. At one point during a gank WR+sven+juggernaut were incapable of dealing enough damage to kill someone before my frostbite did. Also that is me, I changed my name to fuck with a friend.

I presume you're talking about a version of DotA in SC2 that emulates DotA, not Blizzard Dota (which will be absolute shit, I assure you).

Because it doesn't (and won't ever) have
-matchmaking
-playerbase/community/esports
-spectating
-as good ui
-midgame reconnection
-automated leaver/griefer/faggot punishing
-graphics and icons designed specifically FOR the game, by actual professional artists
-equivalent post-game statistics and match history (as of now, I can view the statistics from games I played in November)


and so on. any SC2 equivalent will also be plagued by the limitations of the engine/map editor (they exist) and also likely having scores of bugs and glitches, by nature of being a custom map maintained by a bunch of unpaid modders.

You realize that the same applies to every game in existence? Clearly, Starcraft is terrible because you see Protoss, Terran, and Zerg over and over again. Seriously, go somewhere else if you want to be retarded.

With that said, Dota is better than LoL for a variety of reasons, most of which you probably won't read.

- It has a more dynamic metagame. You don't see the same 2/1/1 + jungle every time. This makes the game more interesting because its more fresh.
- More focused on ganking. You can actually roam in Dota because of the huge amount of XP that killing enemies gives you. There is more counterplay to wards besides either counterwarding or not ganking at all, ie stuff like smoke.
- Speaking of stealth and vision, there's a lot more to stealth and counterplay thereof in Dota. You have the equivalent of Oracle's Elixir in truesight gem, but that's a liability - if the carrier dies, it can be stolen by the enemy and it doesn't restock for a while. This means that you actually need to do more than just stand near stealth enemies with a stealth revealing item - active things like truesight wards and dust of appearance are necessary.
- Heroes have more interesting abilities. Some abilities can affect allies, like Pudge's meathook, Vengeful's swap, and Tiny's toss. Many abilities are far more creative and awesome than those of LoL - for example, Mirana's ult grants her entire team (even those across the map) stealth for a short period of time.
- Speaking of abilities, you don't skill every single hero the same way. In LoL, by level 6, you will always have 3 points in one ability and one in the remaining 3. This is quite different in Dota. For example, although Windrunner's ult is one of her strongest skills (hell, its the only reason she can be a semicarry), most people don't put any points into it until level 10 or later. For other heroes, like SK, you'll want to get stats early on. At the same time, none of these abilities are flat out worthless (like say, Kassadin's W in LoL).
- Speaking of heroes, you don't build every hero the exact same way. In LoL, pretty much every carry wants some combination of Infinity Edge + Bloodthirster + Phantom Dancer + Banshee's Veil. This is because this gives you ridiculous damage and good defense against getting CC'd down and nuked. I'm sure you've seen the metagolem picture which is basically a very strong build for every goddamn tanky dps. Furthermore, very rarely do you actually need (or even can without severely hampering yourself) to significantly alter your build beyond maybe one endgame item and which order you buy stuff in.
- Speaking of items, DotA has a lot of items with very strong actives. This is actually one of my favorite parts of DotA - there's Pipe, which gives your team a temp spell shield, there's Shadowblade, which gives you quick stealth, there's Force Staff, which gives you the ability to reposition members of your team or the enemy.
- Another note: Dota doesn't hand out free self-healing capability to every goddamn player. In LoL, your AD carry WILL have lifesteal, your AP carry will almost always have spellvamp, your jungler will almost always have lifesteal, your solo top will almost always have some form of self-sustainment. The only person this leaves is your support. Oh right, the person who builds fucking philostone and usually has some kind of heal. In Dota, there are only a few heroes that can heal themselves, and lifesteal is fairly rare - the main source of it is Vlads, which also only affects melee heroes. This is important because it makes poking mean so so so much more. Also, sustaining yourself in lane is more interesting - you generally have some combination of tangoes + salves + (occasionally) bottle. Each of these works differently, for example salves can be interrupted by a savvy opponent, while tangoes take time to heal but can be used in combat.
- On the point of sustainment, mana isn't free in Dota. In League, most champions either have little to no mana problems (there's a ridiculous number that don't have to worry about mana at all, because they don't have it). It's pretty lame yo.
- I am going to cut this short because holy shit this is a long post. There are vastly more viable picks in Dota compared to LoL, in LoL there are a ridiculous number of completely unviable heroes. Comparatively, in Dota, there is moreso a few picks that are moderately subpar, but nothing absolutely terrible that guarantees a loss.

In case you're wondering, I was (screwyouelodecay) around 1700 elo in ranked when I quit LoL. I would also add tons of more stuff to that list but I'm lazy and no one is going to read it anyway.

i played another 10 games at 1700 elo and stayed almost exactly at that elo.

i also played exclusively caitlyn carrying myself up there (cause cait is an awesome carry for 1200 elo), so my other ranked stats (see mai hardcore carry riven) reflect play only at ~1700 or so

i would play more ranked but all I do in league is troll around these days anyway. despite the fact that there are tons of things I dislike about LoL, theres still a bunch of heroes which are ridiculously awesome; see nidalee/riven/ez/etc.


EDIT: on a more dota 2 related note, they added single draft and captains mode to matchmaking. fuck yeah
