    Skyrim

Comes out on an epic date (11/11/11), comes from an epic company, comes from an epic series, has an epic box art, has had epic trailers, epic previews, has some epic music shown in the previews, this may just be the most epic game released in the last 5-10 years.

    Re: Skyrim

I lose countless hours to Arena and Daggerfall. When I got Morrowind, I didn't buy a new game for over a YEAR because I didn't need to. My friends and I would play Morrowind co-op; one of us would play on xbox while the other two played on PC, we'd be in the same room and we'd pick out a spot on the map to journey to (practically no useful fast travel system ftw). We'd all get into different shenanigans on the way, it was hilarious, and in no way sad or pathetic.

Oblivion was amazing, didn't quite hook me like Morrowind but I still played for hundreds and hundreds of hours on PC and 360. I was disappointed in the setting just a little - I didn't want to eat boring carrots and potatoes, and it was really difficult to score Skooma ANYWHERE, quite frankly that game was missing a Dren's Plantation. Still epic though. I told my mates they're either going to base the next one on the Nords in Skyrim, or the Argonians in the Black Marsh, I hedged my bets a little but I turned out to be right

So yeah this should be awesome. They only let me play it for 20 mins at the Eurogamer Expo *grumble grumble* but it delivered across the board. A word of warning though; I almost have to use the word 'rehash' here. The graphics are better but the engine is pretty much the same, combat is better than ever but it still suffers from the First-Person Melee problem where you feel pretty detached from the experience.

Oh I guess I should ask, what is everyone going to make first? I know the creation and progression system is different but I haven't read much (and didn't get to fiddle about with it).

First stop for me will probably be my Conjuration/Illusion mage, though my Speech/Unarmed Imperial from Morrowind might have to make an appearance (so I can taunt a whole village into attacking me one by one so I can beat down on them and nick their shit... all legally!).

WHY ARE WE STILL USING GAMEBRYO?

I'll probably end up as a conjuration / short sword argonian, dark elf, or human. I don't really like the Race bonuses, it restricts me to certain races. I'd prefer to play as Human.

I was actually really surprised to see that my 4 year-old PC should be able to run the game just fine on average settings. Then again, it also ran The Witcher 2 just fine on almost maxed out settings. RPG engines they use these days seem to be more efficient than stuff of years past *cough* aurora *cough*.

Going to wait a while to get the game though. There's some other stuff in life that I should be focusing on and I have several games lying around which I haven't played yet. Maybe I'll grab it for Christmas ;)

    Re: Skyrim

Skyriiimmm I've already spent 37 glorious hours on that game, and I loved them all. Currently I'm a level 22 High Elf, I've gone on the path of Destruction mainly but after getting the rose that spawns a daedric warrior I noticed how helpful conjurationw as so I'm working into that aswell. (I'm sort of a noob to the elder scrolls, I haven't played any of the others.) I've found some pretty neat things and if you're looking for a few tips, I find that I've been able to give quite a few nice ones. For example:

The rose staff I mentioned earlier is extremely helpful. The daedric warriror is a demon that has daedric armor and a daedric greatsword. It deals massive amounts of damage and fire damage on the side too. when fighting a dragon (Especially a blood dragon) he's quite helpful if you let him attack first as the dragon will focus on him, and he will tank it quite well. To get this staff go to Whiterun, and go to the pub near Arcadias alchemy store. In the pub you should find a person named Sam sitting at the bartable. Talk to him and he should challenge you to a drinking match. Beat him (It's jsut a conversation) and you will begin a quest. The quest is basically like the Hangover movie, it's quite difficult, and in the end you get the staff.

Another tip is that if you go to Markarth you should first see a murder which starts teh main Markarth quest. While in Markarth after a bit you should see an arguement between a person and a guard (I think) in front of the abandoned house. Just stand there and when the arguement is over the guy will talk to you and you start a quest. In the end you get a mace that does 24 damage, with 31 stamina and magicka damage. It also drains souls. This weapon is very effective and is the best weapon I have so far.

Throughout the main story you will have to go to the Sacred Temple of the Blades. When you first arrive there go into a small room on the left. In that room is a chest and in teh chest is a full set of Blade heavy armor including a shield. On the table is a sword called Dragonbane. The armor is quite nice for the time that you get it. I still use most of it, except teh helmet because I got an ebony one which is slightly better. The Dragonbane is a sword with 14 initial damage (One handed btw) and it does 20 extra damage to dragons and 10 shock damage to everything else.

At some point in the game a courier will give you a letter about a museum opening in Dawnstar. I suggest you go there asap after getting that letter. The owner will give you a quest which in the end gives you a dagger that does 17 damage and has a small chance to insta-kill. It's a tough quest because in the end you have to fight two daedra warriros (Good side is you get daedra hearts from them. SAVE THESE. They are required in the crafting of daedric weapons and armor, which are the best.) and an optional two more. I suggest you do the optional ones because you get a lot of nice things in the room, like ebony ingots and gold ingots. (Lots of gold ingots) You also get one of those weird stones on this mission (Sorry I forget the name right now :/), and a word of power.

I also suggest you join the Companions because after a few missions with them they let you become a werewolf. Being a werewolf is amazingly fun, and it's really strong.

Lastly there are dragon shrines in Skyrim, so far I've found 5, I have a feeling I know wehre a sixth might be, but I have yet to check. If you want to know the locations of some that you may be missing ask me on steam: SilentShadow915 and I will show you. If you are wondering what I mean by dragon shrine I mean the big dragon dens on the tops of mountains, shown by a dragon head on your compass. On the top you will find one dragon, a chest of loot, and a word of power for your shouts. They are worth the trip and battle. Althought one shrie has a blood dragon and some bone mage that will take over your conjurations and will obliterate you. I suggest you run from it, I did. But that shrine also has a full set of three words to a new shout. For me it was Voice Throw, it may be different for you, I don't knwo hwo the game works but I knwo some words are in different places. Voice throw basically just makes a noise where you're pointing and if you are undetected, enemies will go to the noise to check it out.

If you know of any cool things let me know, and if you are looking for other cool things just ask me I amy be a total Elder Scrolls noob, but I've figured this game out pretty well.

P.S. Ultra High graphics + Aurora lights = fucking beautiful. I love using the clear skies shout at night and looking up at the lights, they are stunningly well done in this game. Also, yes I can play on Ultra High with my computer, and everyone says thatmy graphics card wasn't a good idea, but I've yet to hit a graphical limit.

I can kill just about anything with bound weapons at this point, already with conjuration at around 70. Lol at the "get a shiv" quest, when I could just summon a pair of fucking swords. Or a battleaxe. Or a bow.

Also: Dual summoned swords is helpful for moving quickly. Right-hand power attack moves you forward quickly even when over-encumbered, and when paired with the sprinting shout you can actually move fast enough to get back to a shopkeep. I needed this when bringing back dwarven metal from the Markarth mine while holding over 2000 in weight. I made about 400 ingots...

    Re: Skyrim

This is the best game ever. I can see myself matching the time I spent on Morrowind.

So far I've had two characters, which I've played on for about 15 hours each. My first character was intended to be a Breton Spellsword type. Using cool spells to change the flow of battle, then stand toe-to-toe with a sword. As I played on I wasn't quite happy with some choices I made... I wanted to enchant some heavy armour to help out with my magicka, but it was really weak. I also found that I was having to constantly switch between my spells, armour and weapons to fit the situation - in the end I found out that I found myself favouring melee but my character had invested too heavily in spells.

So my second character was a staunch Imperial warrior. At first I was LOVING it; once you get to play around with the melee a bit (more than I got to in my brief stint at Eurogamer) I found it to be really rewarding. Thing is, in the back of my mind I kept thinking "You really should focus on 2-handers, because you'll eventually make a thief/skirmisher character with 1-handers". I do like 2-handers, but I also love using a shield, so I split myself between the two disciplines a bit. No matter though, I was kicking ass.

Eventually I found myself at a stage where I wasn't getting the job done. Dragons were tough to kill, and my attempt to clear out a fort for the legion was stymied when I found myself in a room with 3 enemies carrying glass maces who would pound on me.

So I've remade my character again, but this time to a pure high elf mage. I think I've got the melee stuff out of my system (if I ever miss it I can turn down the difficulty to easiest and just have a laugh with a sword :P).

Now I'm the type of person that really cares about creating a story; I'm glad that Bethesda kept the Elder Scrolls franchise as a 'no experience for quests, no motivation other than personal story arc' game. One of the main reasons I re-rolled to pure mage was because I didn't quite feel happy with the characters I'd given life to, and the other main reasons was because I missed the ability to do random things with magic (i.e. dicking about!).

Seriously, I roasted a chicken with fire then brought it back to life, then sent my zombified roast chicken after irate villagers. Shit don't get better than that.

Thats just your opinion on first-person shooters. I've played mostly all first-person shooter games such as CS, CS 1.6, Battlefield 3, MW3, MW2, CoD1-4, WoW, Forsaken / Perfect World, and so forth.

You probably just don't like the graphics or it's contents or it's players.

CoD: is a fairly good gaming series, it doesn't make anyone a good gamer running around throwing pencils yelling out "TOMAHAWK BITCH U JUS GOT OWNED!". It makes them sound like fucking retarded prepubescent nerds, so does saying "OOOOOOH I CAST RUNE OF FIRE" or some shit on you, so is "Im gonna shoot my enchanted motherfucking bow & arrow through your head, fucking hater."

    Re: Skyrim

So, the main quest turned out to be... highly disappointing. (I guess this counts as spoilers- although there's really nothing to spoil.)

First, it's short. Amazingly short. 18 quests (19 if you count one optional one I opted out of), and it lacks depth.

Find dragon, kill dragon. Just like Moby Dick without the ship, captain or religious allegory.

But seriously, the conflict between the Imperials and Stormcloaks is almost entirely ignored, and the Dragon Conflict or whatever doesn't really have any impact on the world.

Sure, dragons will swoop around burninating shit, but they won't actually do anything important. Just like the armies that are supposedly chopping each other to bits- except for some mission path I haven't gone through yet, it just doesn't exist in the world.

I haven't stumbled on a skirmish between the armies, or watched my assassination of multiple camps have any effect on the conflict.

It's probably pointless to keep waiting for TES to go for deeper story and deeper gameplay where not everything is decided by which NPC you say yes to and then accept quests from.

Also, I don't know about the rest of you, but the last few times I've picked up the game and played, I've been using my bow more than the magic at my disposal- a complete turn around from my previous decisions. Magic feels very weak, although maybe that's because being level 19 and only slinging one or two chain lightnings (WHICH DON'T EVEN BOUNCE!) before being completely MP drained reminds me a little too much of 2ed AD&D wizards.

Bruce the game is more for the side quests and adventuring, sure the story is short but it still has some meaning which you seem to be neglecting.

Pedobear.......... Seriously I've played CoD before, don't think I haven't. I've played WaW, MW2, and Black Ops. In WaW the only fun thing was Nazi Zombies, MW2 was Spec Ops, Black Ops was again, Nazi Zombies. The major problem with CoD is it favours those that care compared to those that are looking for casual fun. If you reallllly want to be good at CoD (Wow what an acomplishment...) and you actually do get good, it favours you. If you don't believe then whatever. I don't have the time to explain, I will later. I have to get to school, writing this made me late....

I had this o shit moment at shearpoint yesterday, first I had to kill off a dragon which was allright but when I went to claim my prize there was this magic undead dude that spawned out of a tomb and was impossible to beat. Eventually after a few tries I decided to just take my swag and run, I learned an entire word of power (all 3 parts) and got a bunch of cool stuff from the chest, and the impossible enemy had fallen off the cliff while trying to fight my follower. I was just like sweet and snuck away for a free sneak level up. Man you must have to be a rediclously high level to fight him.

I'm assuming that's the northwest area where you get the throw voice thu'um. That lich went down, fairly easily for me. I was around level 25 or so at the time, though.

My char is a conjuration/smithing/1handed/enchanting quadruple major, with a minor in speechcraft and heavy armor. The bound swords instakill summoned shit and automatically soul trap creatures, and are fairly powerful, while my crafted, enhanced, and enchanted weapons are the big guns that I pull out for the big fish. A good smith character is absolutely rigged; my epic-level enchanted ebony armor grants me about 260 armor, and my dual ebony swords push over 70 damage (with enchantments) each. With 100 smithing and the corresponding perk, you can improve almost any armor/weapon to literally double its original stats. At this point, I 1-hit bandits and such with even my bound swords.

    Re: Skyrim

I'm so lazy... I don't even want to explain anymore, basically CoD is a very unbalanced game. If you are a casual gamer like myself I seek no purpose in becoming the next CoD legend as a title like that is just retarded. I don't care to get any better and my K/D is like .6 or something. The only tactic that lets you get high K/D's is capming basically. Don't say you don't camp, you do and you know it. There is NO fun in sitting there waiting for people, I'm a full frontal person, I run in and try to seek out the enemy. I find no interest in playing it because the campers are just annoying assholes. The community of palyers in CoD is a very bad one. It might be better with a better community, but alas it isn't. Community is a big piece of why CoD sucks. I don't feel like going further.... FYI paying attention to and rating a person's skill on K/D is fucking retarded. I HATE people that go on about K/D's and saying how people are better than others becase of their K/D. I GOT A BETTER K/D THAN YOU CAUSE I CAMP AND NEVER DIE, THAT MAKES ME BETTER. No it makes you an asshole now go get a job and get out of your parents basement.

*EDIT* I also want to add that the biggest thing about CoD and why it sucks is it creates a retarded amount of Agro. Agravation is NOT a fun thing, and it causes damage to things if you throw them or shit like that. I hate it when my brother plays MW3 all I hear is shit like "GO FUCK YOURSELF YOU FUCKING LITTLE CAMPER JESUS CHRIST GET OUT OF MY SPOT." every 5 minutes. How can you say you're enjoying yourself when all you're doing is yelling? You can't. So shut the fuck up. CoD is not fun, you yell and scream and freak the fuck out from it, thus making you angry, not happy. Fun = happy, Fun =/= shit off the walls angry. P.S. Dropshotters are whores, just thought I'd put that out there.

Back to Skyrim, I agree Kios is a retardedly annoying person to fight. Yes his name is Kios (The mage on the dragon mountain.) Basically I sat there (May attempts) and let my Daedric warrior fight off the blood dragon, joining in when he had it's attention, and killing it without awakening Kios. After I killed the dragon I awoke him, spawned my Daedric warrior to fight him for a bit, got the words and loot, and jumped off the cliff with my ethereal shout. If you're gonna go and fight Kios he drops a nice heavy armor helm, but don't use conjuration. He steals anything you conjur for yourself. My Daedric warrior fought him shortly before he was taken over and he attacked me. I finally beat the story and I'm level 30, I msotly did side things like aquire all the Daedric prince items. I have most of them: Azura's Star, Mace of Molag Bal (I made it do 51 damage, it rapes :3), Mehrune's Razor,Clavacis Vile's mask, and the Ring of Hircine. I still need to get the Wabbajack, and the Ebony Plate armor.

Big part of why I don't play League of Legends as much as I used to. I'm pretty bad at it and just end up raging and losing every game because I'm pissed and making stupid mistakes. That aside, Skyrim is utterly amazing and I love it. And Silent is just trolling. Fairly sure he's intelligent enough to understand what an opinion is and not seriously argue that others shouldn't like a game because he thinks it's bad. (hate CoD, by the way. Fuck FPSes)

    Re: Skyrim

Very Minor Spoiler Alert on Skyrim:

I have to say, waking up in Markarth after the Hangover-type quest was funny, though it led to the whole business with Cidnah Mine (wow, that questline will stick with me). I have to admit, when I did the House of Horrors quest I was genuinely terrified for a few moments ^^ My Imperial has really started to kick ass though. I went for the light skirmisher ensemble, light armour/1-handers/archery/block/illusion/sneak/restoration - I like being able to sneak around like a master thief, but I can stand toe-to-toe with heavy infantry. Voice of the Emperor and the Calm spell are stupidly useful. If someone spots me sneaking about, or I get ambushed, I can just make everyone friendly in the area then sneak around and start slitting throats on my terms.

To weigh in on the MW3 conversation:

It is not a perfect game. Now, I do like the CoD franchise, and I respect this game; I enjoyed the campaign a lot, the gunplay is satisfying and the general feel is great (60fps ftw). The multiplayer is addictive, and intense. The main criticism I have with it is that it's way too easy to kill someone - something the modern warfare games have always had issues with. Now I understand that it's part of the draw, the ease with which you can hop on and start having fun with your friends by killing people, but it's taken to a new low in this game. If you see someone, you can kill them instantly. If someone sees you, you die instantly. I haven't even played a game of TDM, but 90% of players are still only concerned with killstreaks, k/d ratios and camping. Even my friends are drawn in by this. One of my friends, for example, has a 2.10 k/d ratio. On Domination he has 1000+ kills, and 127 captures. I have 600 kills and 400 captures. On Kill Confirmed he has 1000+ kills again, yet only around 200 confirms, whilst I have 500ish kills and 450ish confirms. He is not a an arsehole player, he feels forced into a fairly campy and killstreak-orientated playstyle. I on the other hand run n' gun, take objectives and plant bombs, use riot shields and uavs. I may only have a 1.16 k/d ratio, but my average score per game is 1850ish whilst all the 'amazing' players on my friend list struggle to peak at 1200.

Now I do really like CoD but I can't deny it is an infuriating game. I cuss like a sailor when I play it, and so do my friends. You know Battlefield 3? That is just a much better game; base jumping, dogfights, mortars, epic tank battles and indoor infantry slugfests... I never found myself annoyed at that game. I had 3 squadmates and we had our own little specialities and roles, but we didn't mind switching with each other if we fancied something new. Whether it was having one guy fire smoke grenades out of his mortar to cover our slow advance down a street, or co-ordinating air support to come and pick us up, we felt like there was a solution to any problem.

Battlefield 3 is the better game, hands-down. MW3 is a great game, but more infuriating and unbalanced. When all is said and done though, I know a lot more people playing MW3 and I play it more nowadays too. I wish more of my friends like BF3, but until I can convince them to get it I'll be playing MW3 more.

Even if I'm SO FUCKING PISSED OFF because they gave the Riot Shield a major nerf. Why did they think it was broken? Were Riot Shield users suddenly getting stupidly high killcounts? Were they invincible? No! These days I'm struggling much more... at first I figured people were wiser/I was rusty, but then I started watching killcams and I realised that you can just hipfire at an advancing crouching riot-shield head on and you'll still somehow get a kill <Rant over>

Actually I quite like FPS games, but CoD is not one of them. I'm saying that if you try to say you think CoD is fun, look back at how angry you get playing it, then think about your answer again. If you still think it's fun you have some serious problems. I find almost no person taht plays CoD that doesn't get angry, if you don't then kudos, you're a good gamer. I don't get mad to the extent that most people get (My brother for example) but the game does irritate me. I'm not trolling, I'm stating a fact, my opinion, and saying that you're statements about thinking CoD is fun are false. Again, anger =/= fun. If you don't know what =/= means, it means: does not equal.

You could say the same about DoTA games, or Losing in starcraft when you should have won, You get angry there too, But It's still fun.

A stealth character with restoration magic is damn OP, I just cleared out a whole fort by leaving poison in everyones pockets. If anyone caught me sneaking I could just Calm them. Rather a lot of fun xD

You can't create your own spells anymore can you? Because I was considering delving deep into Enchanting to create a set of armour which would make a school of magic cost 100% less to cast, but it would be funnier if I could make some insanely overpowered and expensive spells to go with it.

Wish they'd brought back the Acrobatics stat... I forget his name but the wizard in Morrowind who made the scrolls that gave you +1000 to your acrobatics was legendary, you could make it over half the world in a single jump

Been loving it so far. The modding community is amazing much like Oblivion and in the next few months we will see some mods that will change the game completely. I am currently level 40 pure mage and looking forward to my 2nd character which will be stealth or pure combat. Such a kickass game. So much to see and do. Play any way you want. WTB more hours in the day!

I really hope you're not one of those guys who went full Destruction and found out that it's really bad mid-late game. Then you post a gigantic amount of bullshit about how POWERFUL destruction is.

Have it for the 360, about 40 hours in. The thieves guild/college storylines were so awesome. Working on the Companions/Stormcloaks and the main quest now, hoping to do Dark Brotherhood soon. Probably grabbing the PC version in a year or two for the modding community like I did with Morrowind/Oblivion.

Jordan, there's already great mods out. I just hope there isn't a huge shit-clusterfuck-fest with nude, sex, prostitution, fuck-everyone-in-the-game, child rape, child orgies, tentacle rape, and more, horrible, horrible low-quality and sex mods.

I'll also pick this up on PC later on down the line, for now I prefer having it on 360 so I can sit on my sofa and relax with the gamepad (I also like the feeling of the triggers in combat, blocking and melee feel great as well as dual-casting spells).

There are indeed some amazingly cool mods out already. I have no interest in mods of any sort though until I play the game as the designers intended, and I still have hundreds of hours ahead of me on that score

This is subliminally teaching your children that they need to go in their rooms, demon whack their sin staff and produce sin milk into their hands and than fling it in the face of the first person they come in contact with after their taint tugging session

Have a ball, I like this article. There's a large lack of hyphens for proper grammar, but the guy's obviously trying pretty hard though.
