It's about time someone designed a proper zombie role:
Role name: Zombie
Description:
-when someone with a zombie bite is killed, they are are resurrected as a zombie (no message shown to attacker)
-when a zombie is killed, they still live (no message shown to attacker)!
-the only thing that can kill a zombie is mass murderer, arson, jailor, kidnapper or lynch, since there's nothing left of the corpse to become a zombie
-also mafia can kill if they use janitor or disguiser (I'm assuming they get rid of the corpse in some way)
Alignment: Neutral Evil
Abilities:
-bite people at night
Inabilities:
-has trouble talking, whatever they type is blurred and has a bunch of zombie sound effects typed out instead, including whispers (unless they're permanently dead, then they can talk properly)
-can no longer change last will after becoming a zombie
-cannot commit suicide (or maybe suicide is only temporary)
Unsure Abilities (im not sure what the best choice is here):
-should they be allowed to vote?
-should they be able to see each other?
-should they be allowed to skip day?
Win Condition:
-zombies make up at least half of who is left
Host Options:
1) Player/doctor knows if he is bitten
2) Infected players who suicide become zombies (they didn't do it properly)
3) If zombies are too powerful, add this: Number of nights until resurrection completes (0, 1, 2, 3, ...) (after the infected person is attacked, or an existing zombie is attacked, or an existing zombie commits suicide, he goes back into the ground for this many days and is treated as being dead; he cannot talk to the actual dead and coroner can permanently kill him in this state if he does an autopsy)
Pros:
-doesn't stay dead easily
-isn't scared of being Blackmailed
-several infected people may visit a vet who goes on alert
Cons:
-weak against Marshall, who could lynch (permanently kill) several of them at once
-need an actual killer in the game, or else town could easily find and lynch them all
Overall effect on the metagame if implemented:
ZOMBIES will basically try to hijack the win of the killer, town will go after killer and then the zombies, but town may have to side with killer in lynching zombies
-town could easily lynch them, but if they've infected some people it could be wasteful since more zombies will pop up later (unless the doctor healed the zombie target night 1 and knowing that no one is infected they may choose to kill the zombie), so they would probably focus on the mafia/sk
-mafia (if they dont have a janitor) would be scared of the zombies and would want to lynch them. Zombies wouldnt want to be lynched, so they wouldnt say anything. Or they would say things hoping that the town will choose NOT to lynch them. But then how do you know they're not faking it so town will save them
-zombies will probably aim for town to bite, hoping someone kills them later and turns them into a zombie
Additional comments:
-if a bodyguard protects a zombie target, he gets bitten instead (doesn't die, just infected and can still bodyguard and become a zombie later)
-maybe have Coroner ability to get rid of zombies (lock them up in the morgue)
-doctor can prevent zombie bites
-investigator and sheriff get an obvious zombie message, since zombies are easy to find anyways ("Your target appears to be dead yet is still moving!")
-cannot be recruited into Cult or Mason
-Amnesiac cannot remember being a zombie (give them an achievement for trying)
