I think in general, smaller night chats will have more success at productive discussion and teamwork. Getting a 4-person CP9 from FM17 to cooperate is a lot easier than getting a 6-person mafia to cooperate in FM18. I feel like in the CP9, our roles had more standalone power, where each player could think about how to use their role without necessarily needing to communicate with the other players, whereas communication was essential for the mafia in this game, especially with a kidnapper and two drug dealers who had a lot of potential for combined effect drugs.
I think a large part of the reason why the mafia night chat had so much disagreement was because each person's action affects everyone else's action to a larger extent than usual, so you have people proposing synergistic actions for several teammates. Factor in each player proposing conflicting synergistic actions that they feel strongly about, and it makes for a pretty messy night chat.
