    Top Thirty-Three SC2 Mafia Roles

SC2 Mafia is among my favorite games to play in the Starcraft II arcade. It's a remake of a classic board game, made into an electronic game that requires trust, logic, and teamwork to win. This game is so awesome, and its roles are no exception. Taking classic Mafia and adding new roles to the game makes it an experience that is well worth your time. So I have decided to list the top thirty-three SC2 Mafia roles as of December 2012. Remember, this is STARCRAFT Mafia, not FORUM Mafia. So as much as I would LOVE to include the Electro Maniac and Soul Thieves on my list, I will not because they aren't in the game. And please remember that this list is very much opinionated, and if you disagree with my opinions, that's perfectly fine. Just remember that with these opinions, I'm not trying to criticize any of you personally, so I ask that you try to be as civil as possible. So let's get started!

    Spoiler : Number 33 :

    Role: Citizen
    ...
    ...
    ...
    NEEEEEEEXT!!!

    Spoiler : Number 32 :

    Role: Survivor
The survivor is probably the easiest role to win as. All you do is claim at the beginning of the game, and you pretty much win. But this role is so boring. You have no enemies, and not really any night actions. I really don't have anything to say about this role, other than, if you get it, just let the game sit for ten minutes or however long and order a pizza or something, but don't just sit there, staring at the screen!

    Spoiler : Number 31 :

    Role: Mason & Mason Leader
The mason isn't that much more powerful than a citizen. They're just a bunch of players that can confirm each other's identities. Town-sided mafia, if you will. The Mason Leader recruits citizens to the masons, if there are any, and he can kill off cultists, but if neither are in the game, then he's completely useless.

    Spoiler : Number 30 - Flame Shield Up :

    Role: Mayor
I know what all the loyal followers of the town leader are probably thinking. Before you all rage at me for only putting the mayor as number 30, please hear me out. The mayor gets extra votes when he publicly reveals his identity to the town. However, this tends to make him a prime target for evil players. Not to mention, if the mayor is a failure, he can ruin the entire game for the town. Plus, HE HAS NO NIGHT ACTIONS!

    Spoiler : Number 29 :

    Role: Witch
The witch is widely considered the hardest role to win as. I... agree. To a certain extent. Really, I think its difficulty is exaggerated. I mean, you win with the mafia, and your mind control abilities allow you to cause a whole bunch of problems for the town. But, let's face it. This role... isn't that much fun if you have nobody to bully, and it IS almost impossible if the mafia, who you have no idea who is, die.

    Spoiler : Number 28 :

    Role: Mafioso
I hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate HATE the mafioso!!! His night action can be performed by ALL of the other mafia, and his kill vote is overridden by the Godfather. His entire existence is useless, and he does nothing except whine.

    Spoiler : Number 27 :

    Role: Bodyguard
When coupled with the previous slot, this next role can be considered the meat shield against the meat shield. Although a bodyguard does usually pierce night immunity, a mafioso can act in place of the godfather, and you end up doing, pretty much nothing. Oh, and you die when someone attacks your target. I just have one thing to say. WHAT KIND OF GAMEPLAY MECHANIC IS THAT!?

    Spoiler : Number 26 :

    Role: Blackmailer
The blackmailer is EASILY the most annoying of the mafia. Being unable to say anything is torture in and of itself! In the case that you're on trial, you are unable to defend yourself. Unless, of course, the town gets smart for no reason. If your an investigator or some other role, you won't be able to report your findings to the rest of the town, nor will you be allowed to ask a doctor for help. And the worst part is that the blackmailer provides the most pathetic excuse of all time. You KNOW what I'm talking about.

    Spoiler : Number 25 :

    Role: Janitor
Although the janitor is good for hiding your opponent's roles, you yourself aren't allowed to know, which is a reason why I don't particularly enjoy having the janitor along. But there are two ways to make the janitor work extremely well. One: clean a fellow mafia member that's likely to get killed during the night. Two: Play the game normally if there's a consigliere in the group. But one thing I would think that would make sense which really should be added is the ability to make your cleanings render players undetectable.

    Spoiler : Number 24 :

    Role: Coroner
Another reason I'm not a huge janitor fan is because of this role. The coroner. The coroner is the perfect counter to cleanings, detecting dead players' roles, and finding their last wills. Simple, efficient, and effective. For obvious reasons, he is necessary for Clue mode. Hmm... I wonder if he's the keeper of the graveyard...

    Spoiler : Number 23 :

    Role: Escort
Let's talk about roleblocking. The escort could be considered an investigative role, in a sense, what with its ability to stop people from doing anything at night. If the options are turned off, the escort can block the godfather and find all of the mafiosi, and even the arsonist. One major weakness she has, though, is the fact she is terrible at reasoning with serial killers. And no, I'm not going to use the pervert joke. Because I'm pretty sure that's not what she's doing with her time.

    Spoiler : Number 22 :

    Role: Consort
The mafia's consort is exactly the same as the town's escort, so she has the same weaknesses as the escort. She's still bad with killers, and she's just wasting time if she roleblocks an already useless player, or someone who's roleblock-immune. So much for saving a jailed comrade. But nevertheless, her strengths still apply in figuring out who does what, and the consigliere can find investigators so you can stop them from finding anything. Especially, if you're fairly certain that they're about to find one of your comrades.

    Spoiler : Number 21 :

    Role: Vigilante
Aw, yeah. Why would you go through all the trouble lynch someone, when you can just shoot them and get it over with? The vigilante saves a lot of time, but he can also lose a lot of time if he isn't careful. Anybody who was shot by one knows what I mean.
As a vigilante, if you fail to shoot someone, you can label the target as the godfather, arsonist, serial killer, if there aren't any protective roles alive. Still, if he wasn't always such a noob, he would have been MUCH higher.

    Spoiler : Number 20 :

    Role: Doctor
The doctor is arguably the most essential of the players. He protects important players, and that can make all the difference in the game. If there are two doctors, you can heal each other and write off two more players for the mafia to kill. Why I don't put the doctor higher is because of how much people rage quit when they get this role. And its easy to understand why, considering he doesn't get much of the action. But even so, with double doctors, there are several layers of WIFOM up. The doctors could heal each other, so that they wouldn't die, but the doctors could be healing other players since they know the mafia won't target the doctors, but surely they won't take that chance, and they'll heal themselves anyway. But if they opt against this, they'll just heal some other people, because they know that the mafia won't take the chance of wasting a kill on the doctors. So, in a nutshell, we have at least four layers of WIFOM with multiple doctors, and we can possibly write more than four players off the mafia's hit list.

    Spoiler : Number 19 :

    Role: Detective
Crime shows are some of my favorite shows to watch on TV. I think it's really fun to try and solve the case before the detectives can. I've played every Ace Attorney game released in America. But none of that is anything like the Mafia definition of "detective"! Instead of solving crimes, you get to play follow the leader. Tracking, though, is very effective. You can follow other players to find out who their target is, and sometimes you ignore detection immunity. Though, it is a really disappointing role that doesn't really deserve the title "Detective."

    Spoiler : Number 18 :

    Role: Executioner
Have you ever had that one guy in the lobby that you just want to punch in the face? The executioner will give you something even better - publicly lynching him. The way to win is simple. You have to kill this one player off with a public lynch, and survive until the end of the game. Unlike the survivor, however, you actually have a purpose, making this game much more enjoyable. An easy way to win is to make a claim as a sheriff early in the game and accuse your target. If that's too much for you, your target can be killed at night, and you will be given a new purpose.

    Spoiler : Number 17 :

    Role: Jester
Now this is the executioner's true form. To win as your alternate form, you have to get yourself publicly lynched. As a former executioner, however, this makes it much harder to win than normal. You can make a claim very early in the game or go random lyncher on the town and make them want to kill you, but a high risk, high reward comes into play. Jesters tend to get more points when they're lynched later in the game. It's in your best interest to continue the charade as long as you can and when you can't go any longer, there are a number of ways to get yourself killed. You're basically the opposite of a survivor now. And you can annoy anybody you want, which does the same thing as the mafioso, which again, I ask:

    WHY DOES IT EXIST!?

    Spoiler : Number 16 :

    Role: Bus Driver
The bus driver can be considered a cross. They can be both protective and killing roles. A bus driver can swap two players, including himself, and redirect actions against one onto the other. If you care only about your own skin, you can swap yourself to make sure people don't go after the one jerk in lobby. On the other hand, you can move important roles around and make the mafia attack the lesser players. Even better, you can even run players over with the bus! Awesome!

    Spoiler : Number 15 :

    Role: Sheriff
Easily the most definitive role in the game, you check one person every night to find their alignment. It doesn't matter who they are. You find out everything. What else can I say? Nothing. That's how self-explanatory this role is.

    Spoiler : Number 14 :

    Role: Investigator
Now this is more of what the detective should have been like. The investigator's results are more specific than the sheriff''s. He can't detect player's exact roles (unless the host is, I don't know, stupid), but he can narrow it down to a maximum of three roles. The sheriff and investigator can even figure out a player's exact role together. Coupled with double doctor WIFOM, the unstoppable four-man team they make will be the death of you. He is a force to be reckoned with.

    Spoiler : Number 13 :

    Role: Veteran
How useful is a role that kills anybody who so much as walks through his door? In the case of the veteran, he is a very useful role. Trolls who get this role will likely be targeted first by the mafia, and this is a good way to kill a lot of evil roles early. But in the wrong hands, unlimited nights on alert will cause the opposite effect. Still, if all you care about is surviving the game, be that way. This is not gamethrowing.

    Spoiler : Number 12 :

    Role: Framer
Don't you love to mess with people's heads? If so, then you'll probably find the framer to be a fun role. The framer is immune to detection, he can make any player appear as the mafia, and can even get the sheriff lynched and make the town waste two days. Meanwhile, the rest of your team will be busy killing the opposition. Even if aren't able to do anything, you get, dun dun dun! The role of the rejects! *shot*

    Spoiler : Number 11 :

    Role: Spy
The spy really can't do much. He doesn't have any night actions, and doesn't get much of the action. So wait, if he can't do anything, why is he so high on the list, or on this list at all? Because you can eavesdrop on your opponents! And I like eavesdropping. Sue me for liking him.

    Spoiler : Number 10 :

    Role: Arsonist
I've been talking about great roles throughout this whole list, and now that we're in the top ten, it's time to tackle some of the big ones. The Arsonist. What can you say that's bad about him? He's an insane pyromaniac that wants to see the world burn to ashes around him. You can basically go undetected for the whole game while you slowly douse all of the other players, and when the time is right, you can cause mass destruction with one click. I can even give this guy a boss theme.

    Spoiler : Number 9 :

    Role: Disguiser
They say impersonation is the most sincere flattery. The disguiser is obviously no exception. He can pose as any player he wants and gain the trust of the town. Especially if the sheriff or investigator you disguise as has a good track record. One downside, however, it's very easy to get caught if you don't talk the way your victim is.

    Spoiler : Number 8 :

    Role: Lookout
At number 8, we have a role that takes a detective, and doubles his usefulness. That's right. I'm talking about the lookout. If you think that someone is about to die, you can perform a stakeout at that person's house and see who visits the target. He isn't defenseless, though, as he can even watch his own place and find out who's visiting him. And one other thing that puts him above the detective, is that he doesn't just follow one person to their target and go home. No, he stays up ALL night. I wonder what coffee he's been drinking.

    Spoiler : Number 7 :

    Role: Godfather
Let's take the weakest role of the mafia, and make him into the one of the strongest. That is a PERFECT adaptation. The Godfather is immune to detection, he has night invulnerability, he has roleblock immunity, he can kill without useless mafiosi, and whatever he says goes. Even his music suits him, because it's from one of the greatest mafia movies of all time, The Godfather (not that I've watched it, I've only heard of it). No mafia is complete without the Godfather. I'm sure we can all agree to that. Move out of the way, mafiosi. The godfather is in town.

    *gets Mafioso*

    Burn this role!

    Rage-Quit

    Spoiler : Number 6 :

    Role: Serial Killer
Murder is such a horrible crime. Among the worst crimes possible. But to the serial killer, murder is art. He's so amazing that escorts can't even take a step towards him before the handsome devil of the night kills them in cold blood. The arsonist has nothing on this guy. There's no mystery to this guy. He goes out and kills who he wants and goes home. All he cares about is being the last one alive. He doesn't need help from anyone. He plays the game solo. He's against all things moral, and will stop at nothing to get his way. Putting him at the number 6 spot on my list.

    Spoiler : Number 5 :

    Role: Jailor
The jailor is by far, the most overpowered role for the town, AND the role most valued by the town, and for good reasons. His jailings can't be roleblocked, he can interrogate people at night, and he can even execute them. But he's only as good as the player using him. Super Jailors can turn the tide of the game in as little as one night, while Failor Jailors can hurt the town tremendously. He's a very difficult role to master, but he's very powerful in the right hands. He deserves this spot completely.

    Spoiler : Number 4 :

    Role: Cultist
The mafia isn't the only team of evildoers. When they're absent, the Cult comes to take their place. You start off as a small band of cultists that want to assimilate the town into their own religion. As cultists, you slowly convert the town to your side, letting the mafia hack away at the rest of the opposition. When you have the majority vote, you can go all out on the mafia and pick them off one by one with your sniper rifle. This team has only one role, but it's one that was good enough to be number 4 on my list.

    Spoiler : Number 3 :

    Role: Consigliere
You wanna know just how useful the consigliere is? Let's see how many roles he's compatible with. Oh, wait. ALL of them. With the Godfather, he can investigate and prioritize targets. With the framer, he can frame important roles. With the janitor, they can kill and clean important players. With the blackmailer and consort, he can find out who needs to be quiet until the mafia can hit them. With the disguiser, he can find out who can be trusted and turn it all around. He works well with everybody. So well, in fact, that he is even voted the vice-godfather. His wonderful leadership skills make him the best of the mafia, in every way. The town does not want to get stuck in a game with him.

    Spoiler : Number 2 :

    Role: Mass Murderer
Let's take a serial killer and a veteran, and mold them into one powerful role that visits players and kills everyone in sight. That is an AWESOME role! The mass murderer is so much fun to play as, it isn't funny. There are so many ways to play. The situations which can happen with him in play forces you to constantly change your strategy. I could go on about him for hours, but what's the point? Let's finish this list off with our number one best role, who by now, you've probably figured out.

    Spoiler : Number 1 :

    Role: Amnesiac
There is NO reason why he shouldn't be number 1. There is no other role that SHOULD be number 1. His recent head injury caused him to lose his memory, and thus allowed him to start life over. His true purpose in life is unknown. You choose your own path. Play the game however you want. You can play it regularly as a survivor, or you can join the mafia. The possibilities are limitless. He has complete freedom over his life. He doesn't have to follow any rules. And that is the reason why he is number one. I'm RaikouRider, and I can't wait for Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm.

I put six hours of work into that, without any breaks, so if you want to criticize my list, please make it constructive. I will report flaming.

Alright, let me make some things very clear.

    1. This list does not seem at all fabricated to me.

    2. Do you know how long it took me to write this? SIX! HOURS!

    3. And another thirty minutes to read and edit it. It hasn't been fifteen minutes since this thread was posted. You didn't read the whole thing, did you?

    4. This is my opinion, and mine alone, so if you have a problem with it, go make your own list.

"The mason isn't that much more powerful than a citizen. They're just a bunch of players that can confirm each other's identities."

That's nearly on the top? Wow.

You know there's only 15 players, when a certain amount of players dies and the masons are left alone then there's a high probability of finding scum.

Edit : They can recruit citizen and kill the cultist - which can confirm a godfather or unintentionally kill a cultist while seeking for citizen.

Damus: Wow. I was being sarcastic. chill bro

    Issues:
Mafioso - Not useless. Mafioso is godfather dumbed down but in the right setups mafioso is the perfect role in which to completely fuck over town and get them to mislynch themselves. All it takes is a silver tounge and the right push(Kill)

One or two kills can be enough to topple the majority that the townspeople hold and claim victory for the mafia.

Jester - This is not the troll role. It is a vital Neutral role that heavily supports the scum in the game. He alone can cause both a safe mislynch and kill off a townsemember on his lynch. If the mafia/Killers used their brain they would be able to use this guy to win over 50% of the time he is in the setup.

Sheriff - Takes no skill to use. Should be closer to the "bottom" of the list in terms of usefulness.

Citizen - Just because you don't have a night action doesn't make you useless. Citizen is a vital role in terms of both balance and the need to step back and "read" what people say. Most of the time it is the investigator and sheriff in the game that wind up fucking over the town due to an intelligent framer and the Citizen can actually take the time to read the day chat and find connections that these other "better" roles would miss due to the oh-so-awesome-night-actions.

Ya know that jolt you get when you shoot a mafia member as vigilante, or heal that kill target at night?
Imagine that, but improved, when you roll citizen and successfully read past their "WIFOM" and lead a lynch against them.

Trash list, witch below the mafioso? srsly? bodyguard deemed useless? he's the coolest bro out there.
or is this list just your own favorites?
cuz Jailor is the number one role, roleblock, pierces invulnerability and even has the anonymous night chat option.
i won't even go further into detail, for one, i'm lazy, secondly amnesiac being first is ....

Oh, that makes perfect sense. Sorry.

I know that citizens are important, I just tend to think that they're really boring. Fun factor plays a huge role when I wrote this.

And yes, these are my PERSONAL favorites.

I had a tough time deciding whether I hated witch or mafioso more, but I decided on the witch because she's harder. (She would have been tied for the 28th spot, otherwise.)

My top 5 mafia roles in order:
    Jester
    Framer
    Executioner
    Mayor
    Jailor

    Lowest 5 are:
    Mafioso
    Cult
    Mass Murderer
    Mason Leader
    Mason

Lol at these people playing devil's advocate. Mafioso is a shitty role and you know it tell me one mafia role that you would take mafioso over. Not useless but still fucking shitty.

    Cute.

Edit: I didn't read the entire thread before posting mine. Uhm... Jester? "Why does it exist?" It is by a wide margin one of the most beneficial roles to the game of Mafia. The entire dynamic around day lynching changes when Jester is involved. Jester is so key to the game of Mafia and the idea of WIFOM that I specifically build my saves (With Any Random) to allow for the option of Jester for as long as possible. As a single person in a game it doesn't always have a massive effect, but the pure existence of the role causes massive effect on the game.

Also, Mafioso and Vigilante are incredibly too low. It can feel like they do nothing at times, but they possess kills. Remove kills from Mafia and the game becomes effectively nothing. Being a role that possess a kill is incredible. Even if you are the Mafia member that feels like they do nothing, all the other roles transform to Mafioso because it is crucial to the survival of the team. Godfather is better, but if everyone had a Power Role- even GF would get run over by Veterans and Jailors.

    Mayor 30? Bullshit.

I've seen plenty of mayors and BEEN mayors who have won the game single-handedly for the entire town.

Yes, there can be shitty mayors, but that applies to every goddamn role.

And then you put the consort at #22. Shame on you. Consort is the best mafia role short of a Godfather or exact-role consigliere

I feel as if this list was just spam to increase post count. I highly doubt you did this in 6 hours, and if you did, then... Wel, not much I can say for that. All I know is that the outside is pretty nice. I'd neg rep you, but I need to spread it first.

And, I recall seeing this on another website, I just can't remember where...

    Really? Please go on.
My rankings has Disguiser, Blackmailer (secret ballot), Janitor, and Consig as noticeably better. With Framer being arguable. I am just wondering how one places Consort above the others.

An intelligent consort can keep inves roles from getting results for 2/3 days and switch tracks to rb a killer who was gonna kill that teammate of yours.
Bus Driver and Witch are the fail safe to fall behind and WIFOM'd newb is a classic move.

My largest problem with Consort is the typical WIFOM claim of Escort makes it such that people expect an Escort to block one person, then change people. Where as Consorts are effectively outed as such when they block any person two nights in a row. "I was Witch'd" could work every now and then, but overall I just find them easy to track down. It is why I put Disguiser, Blackmailer (secret ballot), and Janitor as better. They all make it harder for the Mafia to be tracked down. Consort could do a lot, but typically I find it easy to find.

But Janitor sucks unless you have a consigliere and Blackmailer is ONLY decent if it's secret ballot

And if there isn't a competent detective ingame then the consort is pretty much unopposed if he claims some role other than escort

How does Janitor suck? Once a ??? is in the grave you can claim nearly anything. And as long as your kills/vote/and accusations are decent and you are better at stalling than the town is at leading you can get off of nearly everything. And a confusing graveyard nearly eliminates every non-investigative role from having legitimate leads. They have to try and scum-hunt, and with the high level of bad/troll people it can be pretty much immunity to lynching.

Re: Top Thirty-Three SC2 Mafia Roles

I agree with Slaol. Once you start rbing a known investigator or sheriff (especially more than 1 night) you pretty much guaranteed the town that there is a consort. Consort is pretty much a hit or miss. You CAN play incredibly well and do some sexy rbs on healing roles (and take down a power role like mayor), jailors, arson, etc. but most of the players tend to roleblock the outed investigator only to claim escort when they get tried. Not to mention it's hard to figure out the roles of all variety of people without a consig and 2 support mafia tends to be on the weaker side.

Also the best role for mafia when played well is probably framer (disguiser arguable since that tends to rely more on how well a player can mimic another). Framer is pretty easy to snowball after even a single successful frame (frame the night sheriff/invest checks and said person gets lynched).

    This.
Roles that claim Survivor most often. Godfather, Serial Killer, Arsonist, Mass Murderer, Witch.
I have been in games where people said a Survivor/Amnesiac turned Mafia is effectively another Mafia. It really isn't in setup, but the aligned vote is incredible.
Survivor is mostly better to be killed.
I encourage Survivor to not claim Survivor in my save with a good ol' fashioned 0 Vests.

    Edit: Clearly..
    Godfather
    Consigliere
    Disguiser
    Witch
    Survivor
    is a 5 man Mafia.

Neither side will want to kill you.
4 layers of WIFOM, and 2 types of immunity in a single word.
    Cryptonic, you're a genius.

Claiming off a ??? without prior information of the role you just cleaned is risky as hell unless you have a buttload of random slots, in which case people don't tend to look at the graveyard anyway. It's amazing how many times I've caught Mafia as vigilante claiming vigilante with a ??? in the graveyard. Works with some roleclaims, I suppose, but otherwise it doesn't work out.

Also investigative roles have no drive to look at the graveyard, especially if there's a fucking janitor in the game. It's easy to ignore the graveyard and do fine based on present roleclaims alone, and fuck me if I'm going to try to assign the ???s to a slot

Besides all of that, Janitor can hurt Mafia just as much by cleaning neutral roles or power roles, which usually forces the Mafia to play super defensively even though the roles that could oppose them are dead. I always laugh when there's a set spy and the fucking janitor cleans him, because the Mafia just shut up the whole game and have extremely little communication between eachother.

Framing only works once from my experience. Still beneficial, though, because the town tends to completely stop lynching once they figure out a framer is active.

Also your point on the Consort is sort of moot. Sure, they know there's a consort, but like I said if you don't claim escort then nothing can be done against you barring investigative roles (which you are blocking)

The ratio of times that Janitor confuses the hell out of town vs. screws up Mafia is a very positive one for Town.
Even with a ???, claiming Vigilante would never be a good idea- ever. lol. Might as well claim Spy. The claims still need to make sense, the ??? just makes it harder for non-investigative roles (11 out of 17 Town) to respond without the Grave to decrease possibilities.
Early cleanings of Neutrals can ruin a Mafia, but it also has the same; if not larger, chance of cleaning a valuable Town role that will cause Town to wait for it to show up.
