And then he realises that 40 years later he will be just the same older man run across by a young one?

Very Good, Espozito.
The young man, in my opinion, is full of exuberance and hope traveling to the modern society to try and make a name for himself. He doesn't realize the things he is leaving behind and keeps his sights set on what in front of him.
The older man has lived the high life and only seeks the comforts that relaxing in a quiet town can bring. He is full of wisdom and experience and just wants to spend the rest of his days in peace that is rarely experienced within the society today.
There is also another meaning to the words. What is it?

A couple of days later, he is a few days older and takes the same road back? He sees his reflection in a pool of water?
Basically.. he sees himself grow older and still taking the same road every day, and he's not really going anywhere with his life...

Maybe the young one is full of ambitions, and old man is just disappointed?

To be a little more clear, the secondary message only slightly relates to the men walking on the road.

do you really say this is philosophy?
i would have classed ambiguously scarce worded riddles as linguistic foreplay to an uninteresting punchline
btw i love the butthurt @ my little joke, not sure how transparent trolling can induce such a reaction on my reputation from some
so these are riddles?
i was worried for a second, i thought you people attempted to discuss philosophy through some new way; some neo-nihilistic trend that bleeds into all channels of communication through a circular predilection for, and from said viewpoint.
Are you really trying to derail the thread?
and it is a phrase that is open to interpretation.
Hello all. It was not my intention to derail the thread, I was merely commenting on the differences in cultural communication channels.
It seems that since you do seem to have somewhat of an inclination to the sole discussion of your original sentences, I shall direct my truest attention towards them.
'A man walks down a road leading to New York City, behind him lies his hometown of Abbot, Texas.
A couple days later he runs across an older man traveling the same road in a different direction.'
Let us assume we are talking about the same New York City, founded in 1624 by Dutch traders, one can assume that this man is NOT entering West or South, as the city lies Northeast of Abbot, Texas. This is of course, assuming he did not take a naval route, and the road metaphorical of his journey lies behind him. I'm sure we can count out such deep thinking in such a skin deep forum.
This direction of travel, North and East, is atypical of natural migratory patterns. In the Northern hemisphere, the age old example of the 'Bird', almost exclusively travel South, with a slight Western leaning dependent on precise geographical location. If one is to apply the strict definition of migration, i.e., requires a return journey, THEN a Northeast direction is normal. It is safe to assume that as the user Damus_Graves has posed this line of study, and has stepped out of his comfort zone by blessing us with another of his virtually pointless threads, that the man is indeed travelling Northeast.
The human migratory nature however, is markedly different to that of the lower classes of organism. Northward Drift, is quite possibly the most common and easily definable Migration Pattern, and is a product of Industrial and Cultural growth situated in warmer areas. And thus we come to our first extrapolation. The man is from Abbot, Texas, which from the sound of it, is an unimportant, and insignificant settlement. One may assume, that this person has come to New York City for work, as sad as that may seem. To leave the educated South for the sodomite loving North is one decision I shall never come to empathise with or understand.
A Google search of the town Abbot, Texas, leads to a complete lack of results. The town Abbott, is fairly well known it seems, but, since this is a serious thread, one may safely assume that Damus_Graves has spelled the settlement in question correctly, and is indeed a town seperate to Abbott, Texas.
Further study and extreme extrapolation of the circumstances may lead to a conclusion of the man's motivation for leaving his hometown, but, for the sake of brevity and because of my non-optimistic outlook on such an examination, we shall have to forgo such scrutinies.
On a return journey a few days later, the man finds an older man traveling the same road in a different direction. This very sentence eats away at the solid foundation of trust that I had bestowed upon the Original Poster, Damus_Graves. Such a common word, so mangled and distastefully mutilated has almost entirely discouraged me from my commentary on his otherwise well written manifesto. As I am a forgiving man, I shan't dwell upon these grievances, I only ask that a Moderator of this community would hand out a minimum of a 2 week ban to Damus_Graves. This will be so that he may himself come to see that others believe in him, and wouldn't want his future prospects to be harmed by his inability to apply himself.
But to continue with the analysis, at first reading, one may be highly coerced to liken this older man as the same individual as the one that left, and attempt to twist with diabolical wordplay the preceding words and punctuation. What all must remember, that WIFOM has not been used ONCE in this Original Post, and as I seem to recall, ALL Original Posts must have at least one use or reference to WIFOM in their text. As Dark Revenant originally intended, those who didn't follow this rule were insta-banned, and it has been good to see that all future posters from that date in February 2011 have now followed this grand guideline.
The old man is by far the most interesting character in the story. You see this man is travelling the road in a direction that is completely undeterminable by the reader. Whether he is travelling away from New York City or towards it is completely undefined; nowhere in the sentences is the original man's next movements constituted as being further towards New York City or away from it.
The old man can be likened to many figures of myth and metaphor: Death, Time, Opportunity, a Personification of Moral Innocence, even such abstract concepts as Happiness or Avarice are possibilities. Without having such basic knowledge of this old man, there is simply no way of determining his defining characteristics.
I have a subtle inkling that devilish wordplay may be a misguided justification to a contradiction of my previous point, so let it be shown that a genuine inquiry into this avenue of thought is totally and irrevocably futile.
'A couple'. In the first two words, a couple, meaning two is mentioned. This is most definitely a defining moment for the personality of the old man, as the first two, or 'couple' of words even mention the word 'couple', meaning two, so the 'two' people, the man and the old man, are most assuredly a couple, meaning two. 'he runs', this 'couple', meaning two, of words is correctly placed to the right of the words 'A couple', so as to define where on the street the old man is. The old man is to the right of the original man, indicating they have some kind of close friendship, since to be on the 'right hand' of a king was considered the greatest honour possible. The man has some kind of close relationship with the old man, and the word 'runs' means that they have close bonds of friendship overpowering over the physical and socially binding conventions that the two would normally have. 'an older man' indicates more of the same. This break in the strongly adhered to principle of 'couples' shows that the old man has a greater overall importance in the human race than the original man does. 'traveling the same road', indicates the old man is subject to the same dimensions, limitations, and frustrations as the original man. Let us not forget that it is a couple of days later, so one can attribute higher importance, and indeed situational superiority to the man from the first sentence. Whether this is able to be applied to other areas of life such as in experience or wisdom is undetermined. 'in a different direction', signifies the equality of the two men, although travelling in different ways. Perhaps they come from the same stock, but have different choices to make? What can be determined as an absolute, is that the alliteration in the words 'different direction' is used as a fake scent to throw off the uncanny. Using the letter D would cause all but the most trained to believe the old man is Death, and the first man is God, warning all of a doom that is to come. However, the numerical opposite to D is in fact V. This is the final piece in the well constructed puzzle. V is the worldwide symbol for Vishnu, Hindu Preserver of the Universe.
In conclusion, this riddle is well versed for such that enjoy the over-analysis of coincidentally constructed wordplay, the, if I may say so, easily entertained, and the self acclaimed philosopher.
Good day to you all.

That was a brilliant analysis and it was correct for the most part as well.
I noticed that throughout the analysis you decided to demean me as apart of your explanations.

FYRE, I am impressed by your analyse, I have given to much rep in the last 24 hours but I owe you one

btw i changed my avatar. you like moar?
I did misspell the hometown and I did want to target the 'easily entertained' as you stated.
indeed one of the meanings of the text could be God and Death; another meaning can be the aspect of a young man passing his older self by.
The big one I was looking for here was the mannerisms of people.
the young man symbolizes the youth looking to move forward and make new things and expand the world while the older man, symbolizing the aged, only wants to slow down and let things be.
christian god doesnt. vishnu ofc is the one true god

God made all life on the earth, and by definition, a 'sin' is a direct refusal and insult to God, his works, and his love for the human race. Since God is everything good, i.e. the opposite of sin, he cannot BE evil, or have any evil facets of his personality. To allow someone who has directly rejected God's love and good works is to be an 'Unjust Judge', and letting a crime go unpunished. Unjustness is unholy, and since God is all that is Good, he cannot commit sin. As such he has no choice but to send people to Hell when they sin, for as most Protestants believe there is ONLY Hell or Heaven after death, all must go to one or the other.
