Mentor Discussion for Starter Game + SignUp Mentors

Ok. This is the next step for the starter game and the topic is MENTORS

That is the main part of the discussion as these rules will still be in place:

1. Mentors will not have and additional information about the game
2. Mentors will not discuss with other players and has the same restrictions of OGC as the players
3. Mentors are Optional.
4. Mentors are Veteran players of Forum mafia

I want your Opinion on what a Mentor should do for their Mentoree. How much mentoring should be done? How much discusion should be place? Should it be the player to ask for help, or the Mentor to just give it.




I personally think that the Mentor should be the judge of how much help they give the player. But the Mentor should make sure that the player understands:

1) How to vote and how the vote counter works.
2) Knows how the setup works.
3) Understands the Mechanic.
4) Understand typical FM play.
5) Understands the rules.

But on top of that, the Mentor should aim to create conversation with the Player, and try to get to know them better, bring them Into the community

IMO mentors main focus should be guiding the player on how to further discussion. Rather than have players get defensive from opening votes, teach them how to ask the right questions to get out of the shitposting stage. Honestly they can probably learn the rest from there, and just use the mentor for simple things like how to vote and such.

Things not to do:

1)***** with your new player and not tell them how to vote, leaving them to fake vote in red text. (SUPERJACK)

I've actually been a mentor in a game before and been a mentee twice.

What you DON'T want to do as a mentor is say "this person is Scum" or "this person is Town." What I believe a mentor should be is someone who helps guide the mentee into the type of meta that comes natural to the player. Everyone plays differently, and as such, what I believe a mentor is there for is to give OPTIONS and lead them into understanding. When I was a mentor the very first thing I did was give them a shit ton to read about strategy. Looking back on this now I prolly could have done this way more efficiently, but I wanted to make sure they knew the basics. I don't however know how valid my experience as a mentor was considering this is a completely different site with a completely different site meta in how players generally go about making the "correct" (I use that term somewhat loosely) plays. Along with this I think a good mentor is someone who can see things from multiple angles and have the ability to articulate themselves in a manner that is easy to understand without either getting too deep too quick or explaining things that are above or below the mentees ability. I believe I actually make a better mentor than player because i am not caught up in the moment and can think with a clear and calm head.

As far as discussion goes, this is going to very from pair to pair. Some mentees will not need to have their hand held through the whole process while others will want much more feedback. I believe it is primarily up to the mentor to decide what is appropriate in this regard. The mentor must first realize that they are doing this as a service to the mafia community first and foremost.

I think one of the best tools that I would use to mentor someone would be to phrase things such as "what about this?" and then seeing how much the mentee knows from there. Though there is time for correction to the mentee, the mentee must understand why that particular play is not a good option. Granted, no player is going to get everything 100% correct.

Finally, and probably most importantly, the mentee should come out of the game feeling like they were the one who was playing and not just a vehicle of the mentor to do what the mentor wants.

On a final note I think there are different levels of knowing how to vote, what the mechanics are and the like and I think it only appropriate for for those who are moderators and have extensive experience with the game to choose who the mentors are.

Well I'm looking for more confirmed mentors. And more mentor discussion. Otherwise we may end up with the same stance as last time.
Mentors need access to some form of Private IM. Ect Skype and to be well worn in FM.

The intent of the Beginner's Game is for brand new people or people with very little experience. I don't know if SuperJack has an exact cut off, but if he does, I'd have to image it's something like 2-3 games max. 40 games makes you quite experienced. While it's great you want to improve, it would not be fair whatsoever to put you in a game with people who are learning to scumhunt, etc. for the first time.

I think many players around here would be happy to talk to you about what we're observed in your play and what we think could use some improvement. Seems like something for PMs, a Forum Mafia Parking post, future multiplayer games, etc., but not a Beginner's Game, where the intent is to involve brand new or nearly brand new players in an environment free of veteran sharks who can push them around disproportionately.

Makes sense to me. I don't recall any mentor games other than the Beginner's Game so that would be a point to raise with the host during the setup question stage or sign-up stage.

In my experience most mentor games are for New players, yes, but sometimes there are things like paired teams and things like that that function as a single slot. It would be like a game where everyone was an Archon team with two people. Could be worth exploring IDK.

If we're taking votes, I would be fine with Funce being able to sign as one of the more experienced players in the Beginner's Game. Would be a good chance for him to have a mentor too since we don't typically do that in most games.
