6:12* (found more reliable sources) AM EST isn't just an arbitrary time. Nor is 12/21/12 just an arbitrary date. It happens to be the exact time of the winter solstice, when the sun is lowest in the sky, marking the start of winter and the shortest day of the year.

Interesting Sidenote: This is the earliest that the winter solstice has occured since 1896.
