The typical dichotomy is that left = liberal and right = conservative. Generally this means left results in more social freedoms but fewer economic freedoms, with right being the opposite. Hence Republicans (right) are in favor of fewer economic restrictions being imposed by the government (things like universal health care) but more social controls (banning same sex marriage/abortion, legislating morality), while the Dems want fewer economic freedoms for corporations (higher taxes on the rich, etc.) but greater social freedom.

Also your dichotomy here isn't correct. Left/right on these graphs are solely to do with economy. Left favours equality and social benefits like universal healthcare and welfare, while right favours a more free-market capitalist economy. The social controls that you're talking about are represented here by the libertarian/authoritarian scale, where libertarian gives more social freedoms to the people while authoritarian gives more social restrictions. A mix of all four is possible, such as authoritarian/right (Republicans, Democrats to an extent), libertarian/right (American Libertarians, early non-religious Tea Party), libertarian/left (Scandinavian democracy such as Sweden and Norway), and authoritarian/left (Lenin/Stalin-era USSR and other Soviet bloc countries).

I think my libertarian skew is a bit less intense than it was a year or more ago when I last took this test.

I would like to note that some of you clearly skewed your answers in favor of receiving results you want... anyone ALL the way to the right or ALL the way one direction, answered exclusively "strongly" (be it agree or disagree) to any question.

These forms of questionaires are designed so that people with consistent beliefs will vote strongly for some and "weak" against others. People voting consistently "strongly" thus having their vote, for instance, all the way to the right, answered in a way to achieve a result, rather than to answer honestly.
