    Re: TRUMP TEARS THREAD

I don't know, 60 years is pretty good for a soft authoritarian regime not to collapse into a hardcore authoritarian regime. It's bleak, but most democracies collapse sometime before 50. Western Europe and the US are exceptions not the rule and even Western Europe's democracies have come within a hair's width of collapse multiple times in the last 100 years. I'd of course argue that there are economic factors driving that instability, but we really have no place to look down on them lol.

I have actually just done this because you've interested me. I picked "trump corona update" as my search term. In my extremely anecdotal searches I've come to the conclusion that google values recency higher than duckduckgo.

Of the top 5 articles google offered me, 4 of them were made in the last week. Only one was from October. DuckDuckGo offered me more dated articles from a wider variety of sources. I don't pretend to understand how search engines work, but could this not potentially just be that the two algorithms are coded differently? It makes sense from a corporate perspective. Google is the most used search engine in the world, millions if not billions of people use it for research every day. Would it not be within your company's best interest to have the most up-to-date information be the most accessible, perhaps at the cost of it being less objective?
Whenever I google something about the coronavirus pandemic, I only find articles that tell me why ‘it’s real’ and why the lockdown is necessary; even if I tailor the search to look specifically for results that would favour my opinion. On DuckDuckGo there still seems to be a bias in favour of pro-lockdown results but I usually do manage to find articles expressing opinions similar to my own. In DDG’s case I do not know if that is the result of inherent bias in the search algorithm or if its just due to what the media is most likely to report. I will try to look for a specific example for you.

Thatís a fair point. Maybe weíre just inserting our own Eurocentric biases here xD

Maybe it's also because reality doesn't always align with your feelings.

I'm curious about these specific examples, thus far I haven't been able to find any.

    Re: TRUMP TEARS THREAD

Can I actually point out something cool, before we completely deflect because Oberon can't back anything he said up with facts.

This line of discussion is a perfect example of the half-bakedness and ad-libbing of arguments that the right does all the time.

First we have Oberon, someone who is historically very right-wing, pro-free market, and anti-regulation. Sure, let's accept that. All cool points.

Then we have companies that are trying to maximize user profit. They do so by, potentially, delivering tailored content and trying to maximize conversion. Let's not even think about whether they are doing this for profit, such as in the instance that Oberon is actually viewing tailored results on Google but anonymized results on DDG, and ignoring that the entire purpose of both of these sites is to get their audience to keep returning so they can get ad money. Maybe the CEO of Google has some sort of personal stake in keeping people home or dislikes the CEO of Fox because he fucked his wife or something. Either way, free companies, no regulations, it's all cool. One can spend their money however they want and run a business however they want.

Now, this is where things get a bit wonky. For whatever reason, we raise the point that these companies are in bed with the state, a state (given that these companies are located in the US) that heavily opposes any sort of lockdown. Because these companies are colluding with the state, they try to push the anti-lockdown agenda by.... pushing pro-lockdown views. How this contradiction makes any sense is yet to be seen but sure let's run with it.

Clearly the solution to this problem, according to Oberon, is to make these companies publicly owned. As in, have the government owning entire social media platforms so that they can prevent these companies from pushing views, views that the companies are pushing because also according to Oberon they are in bed with the state and thus influenced by the state. So the pro-free market, anti-regulation approach to this problem, is to actually go full communist and have the state own the companies, so that the state can prevent the companies from pushing the views that the state is influencing them to push.

    Very smart.

    Re: TRUMP TEARS THREAD

I didnít say that in this thread though. I think theres a serious issue with the state owning that kind of media but its not like theyíre not altrady in bed with it. As far as Iím concerned Facebook et al are practically publicly owned in all but name. I just think that nationalizing them could be a temporary solution as long as the government can be trusted not to enforce hate speech laws too liberally. Its just that that comes with all the inherent problems that nationalization has. The other idea is to regulate them - and sure - but if they are to be regulated those regulations have to be very well thought out and very, very clear. Thereís no simple solution to that problem as far as I can see it.

    Re: TRUMP TEARS THREAD

How tf are they practically publicly owned in all but name?

Facebook does its own thing to make as much money as possible. In fact, they take such a light touch when it comes to right wing conspiracy theorists because they are desperate not to lose conservatives from their platform.

WTF does that even mean? Where do you think all the money goes?

This seems much more likely to be that the news sources that are widely considered reliable and have a larger following are all pushing for lockdown.

Considering that DDG gave you the same results it seems very irresponsible to conclude that google is pushing an agenda, right? Donít get me wrong, I really do believe google is influencing our lives. But I donít think it would be so obvious, and I donít think it would be at all related to the legitimacy of the pandemic because the pandemic is very legitimate and Iíve been seeing the effects of it firsthand at university.

Someone more informed than me should fact check my post

Wasnít Facebook reamed out in US court for privacy breaches not just two years ago? Thatís where we got all the zuckerberg lizard memes. Thereís multiple conclusions we can come to here.

    1. The US government was not using this private data for themselves because if they were they wouldíve just quietly collected the data and not gone to court over it.
    2. The US government does not have extremely close ties to Facebook because if they did they wouldíve known about these breaches that existed for years, right?
    3. The US government probably doesnít even like Facebook.

I had a bit of a longer response typed up but I figured I didn't want to go through the effort of reading more word salad and cognitive dissonance. It really does feel to me like Oberon legitimately has not developed the facilities for critical reasoning of his own and other's arguments, and seems to be posting contradicting ideas here, all based off of feelings (or more accurately, what Tucker Carlson and Ben Shapiro have told him to feel) with not a shred of evidence yet to back anything up.

Time to get this thread back on topic.

Iím really at the last straw here. You can personally go fuck yourself along with your shitty attitude. I have absolutely no interest in talking to someone who has to insult me little every single post. You may present yourself as a reasonable person who likes arguing, but all you are is a little bitch who likes to throw temper tantrums and passivelt aggressively attack others and then deflect and pretend youíre somehow either justified or wasnít actually insulting them.
    Have a good day.

In this thread you have posted:

    - Several deflections, whataboutisms, and posts changing the direction of the thread multiple times.
    - Many claims, every single one of which is unsubstantiated and which you've not posted a single piece of evidence for. Anyone asking for evidence is completely ignored, as you deflect the argument yet again. I challenge you to show me a post in this thread for which you've shown any proof of. Just one.
    - An argument in which you genuinely contradict yourself within the same argument.

These are habits that have been pointed out by multiple people, I'm just more honest about it. Notice that I disagree and have disagreed with others, though I'll discuss things differently with them because it's actually possible to stay on topic, get evidence and facts, and have discussions with them, rather than discussing conjecture, conspiracy theories, and summaries of talk shows.

This isn't an attempt to stifle you or even insult you. It's me trying to get through to you that the way you argue is so flawed that it's not even useful to discuss these types of topics with you. The reason you're getting it more from me is because, frankly, pretty much everyone else has already given up, meanwhile I'm a stubborn fucker who can't let things go.

But if it's not welcome, I suppose I can give up as well. My intention wasn't to insult the person, but point out flawed arguments and thinking.

    Re: TRUMP TEARS THREAD

I can't speak for tech companies like google or youtube, but I watched an internal video from the ceo of my tech shop the other day. He talked about how traditionally around christmas time sales go up around 25-35% for the quarter, however sales have been up 60-85% for basically the entire covid period consistently. Covid has been very lucrative for my industry and there is defs a monetary side to covid being explored by businesses. I'm not sure how much lockdowns itself has an effect on these figures, I think it's more apt to apply the cash stimulus injections into peoples wallets giving these results based on the last stimulus we did for the 2008 financial crisis. Perhaps there is a narrative being pushed by social media to keep this money train rolling, but i'd say they would be doing it out of self interest rather than being in bed with the government.

I don't mean to be an asshole by saying this. I just feel like it's necessary to highlight the issues here because it causes tensions needlessly and hurts the ability to have healthy debates (and even just discussions).
If you don't want to insult people and you just want to prove them wrong, attack their logic. Don't do... this.

Like really, it's not helping anyone, and it's just not nice. If you truly feel like you're talking to a brick wall and that it's not useful to anyone, well then... just stop, I guess?
And by the way, I tend to agree with you more than with Oberon on politics when it comes to "classic left-right" arguments, so this isn't me taking any side but the side of logical, healthy discussion.

That's why talking with people who aren't in your echo chamber is good, yep. Like Exeter who made me define more clearly in my mind the importance of democratic tradition earlier, and have a sneak peak in why in the world would people not want democracy for non-religious reasons lol (and I must say it does make some sense, even though I definetly don't want it).
    Good post btw.

True, you're right. My apologies to Oberon for being an asshole. In the future I'll try my best to walk away from shit rather than becoming toxic. Probably not a great use of my own time either.

For the record I do like hearing about opposing views. I feel like thedougler did a decent job of substantiating his arguments, though he has pretty much the exact same views as Oberon, which at least taught me something. And even though I think Exeter's political ideology is inherently abhorrent to me, and I'd violently oppose anyone trying to impose such a system on me, it was fascinating to hear his perspective.

Yeah, it was a good discussion.

Iíve always been a firm believer in authoritarianism, that a strong competent hand is needed to guide the herd, e.g. heavy penalties for breaking the COVID lockdown, mandatory mask & contact tracing procedures, etc, which not everybody likes to do, but have to comply regardless of what they think or feel.

But you made me realise in the wrong hands, it could be disaster. E.g. Mandatory bleach injections en-masse to cure COVID.

Please, just please shut the fuck up. I physically cannot stand listening to whatever nonsense you are spewing. You are damaging everybodyís brains. Hell, my brain can no longer process language. At this moment, it sounds as though you are speaking mandarin. My ear drums have packed their bags and moved to a silent Buddhist monastery after listening to the bullshit youíre saying. I have a question for you. Do you ever shut your goddamn mouth? Do you ever just let your vocal cords take a fucking break? I wouldnít be surprised if your immune system is attacking you right now, because quite frankly, you are an absolute disease. Maybe I should call the zoo. Tell them to take you, because youíre acting like a buffoon right now. IF they would take you, that is.

But they wonít. They will likely shoot you on sight for being a public nuisance. Your existence is a complete mystery to me. How can someone who has the ability to speak be such an dumbass. Were you made in a lab or something? Was your brain programmed to only say stupid shit?

Let's turn this tears thread into a tears of friendship and happiness thread instead.
