I have my first college interview tomorrow! I'm not too terribly nervous, just because I've kind of steeled my nerves these last months from a variety of slights. But still, it'd be nice to have some reassurance.

In any case, do any of you have any advice to offer? From past experiences or just things you've heard from friends? I was under the impression most of you were older than me, for whatever reason. Sumi welcomes them.

just be yourself? ololol. There are no useful tips for situations like that. At least i never found some tips who actually helped me. This guy is just a human he won't cc you and then have the rest lynch you.

I sat a lot of interviews when I was applying for med schools. The ones I did best in were the ones where I was completely relaxed and liked my interviewers. It's very much a mindset thing, but you'll do best if you can treat it more like a conversation and less like an interview.

Don't try and rehearse or prepare anything before hand. Answer every question like it's the first time you've heard it and if it's a difficult question don't be afraid to take a few moments to think before replying.

Having said that, it's a good idea to read a little about the college/ institution you're applying for because you are likely to be asked some questions relating to that.

The best advice I can give is to be honest and not to try and impress them. Remember you're an impressive enough person already without having to try and be somebody else for them.

Oh, yes, cmg is right, clothing is important. I'm far less qualified to talk about what a woman should wear, but you want to er on the business side of formal. Obviously, often the attire is dictated by the climate, or time of the year and the local custom.

Blouses or shirts (usually tucked) into a skirt are what I see most girls wear. Less commonly I see a long pant, usually black but sometimes grey/charcoal, etc. Shoes tend to be non-heeled and closed. Cleavage is generally frowned upon, for the simple reason that it gives the impression you're trying to seduce the interviewer. Curiously skirts on the other hand tend to be above the knee.

Skirts below the knee are for secretaries and librarians, not college interviewees who wish to look business-like

Wear your hair short if possible, and show enthusiasm for the college as an institution.

Heh. Standard Mafia attire, in other words? Suit and tie. Except I'm a girl so wearing a tie might be a little awkward to an interview. xD

Awww, hehe. That's pretty bold of you to say, dear Godfather, without knowing me personally. Sumi is flattered. Nevertheless, I'll take your advice into high consideration. The only thing I might disagree on is the fact that I take unnaturally high precision into my thinking, and it makes me a slow answer-er if I try to respond without giving it due preparation. I'm absolutely terrible at improvisation, even if I am being honest, so when asked "if you were to personify yourself as an animal..." or "who's your role model?" without preparing for it, I'd have no idea because I'm a narcissist and never think about anything other than myself. Lol, I'm joking about the last part, of course.

As for attire, I actually don't own any formal skirts (and no, not because all of them are scandalously short lol, I just prefer pants when it comes to formal settings). So it'll definitely be formal collared shirt and pants for me.

I've actually stalked my interviewer (jk lol, just looked him up on whitepages), and he's a 72 year old man.
Not to mention the fact that he's older than my grandfather, but I haven't even turned 18 yet. Pretty sure that's bordering on illegal behavior. xDDDDD

Most of the ones I applied to are like "We don't do interviews unless we have alumni in your area."
And lo' and behold... there's an alumnus in my area. I can't say if it's a blessing or a curse lol.

I prepared some of the basic questions (You shouldn't look like a full retard if you think for 10 hours) and got into a usual convo. Well, be yourself and eat enough bananas!

Sounds like a simple grip and grin the way you describe it... especially if the interviews are done by "alumni." Dress professional and speak like an adult.

All this guy cares about is that you're not some bimbo who is going to bring down the college's reputation. He would, however, like it if you were someone who would grow up to someone who, down the line, donates a bunch of money to the college after you've made it in life. Maybe get your own building.

Means you need business attire and the ability to calmly answer whatever fucking question he asks (the questions mostly don't matter, it's how you answer them). Be confident, but don't come across as an arrogant douchebag.

That's all you need to do.

Hehe, thanks for the advice guys. I actually did go to the interview a few hours ago, and it was...

I wouldn't say "bad." But more like, uneventful. The guy literally read off a piece of paper the questions he was supposed to ask me, and basically asked a question, I answered, and there was silence while he tried to write down everything I said. Because he stopped writing every time I tried to fill the silence with something in order to listen (and he would occasionally forgot what I had said before and asked me to repeat), so I learned if I wanted him to write down everything, I had to shut up after I answer. It was completely not the way I had expected. I can't tell if it was a good interview or bad interview at all, lol.

I don't know lol. I didn't really learn anything from that interview as far as that went. I have another one this Friday, except this interviewer is the Business Department Dean, so I can expect something more aggressive.
