Saw this :Mermaidsand it brought a question to my head:
If you were to meet a mermaid in real life and fall in love with it, would you prefer it, both practically and cosmetically, for it to be top half human, bottom fish; or vice-versa?
With the assumption that, if the top half were fish and scaled to a reasonable size, you could communicate effectively still.

Well then, it would be top half human, and bottom half some type of live-bearing viviparous fish, to facilitate reproduction. If we're counting dolphins, that'd be cool, though they're technically mammals and not fish. Otherwise, we're looking at something more along the lines of a guppy.
