Mathematics notation is confusing.

2^2 = 2 * 2

2^3 = 2 * 2 * 2

but

2^-1 = 1/2

and

x^-y = 1/(x^y) = 1/(x * x * x ... y times)

If you want to know more about exponentials, you might want to look into the definition of a function y = e^x where its derivative is also y = dy/dx = e^x.
