Role: Lawyer

Alignment: Town/core

Ability: Either defend or prosecute someone on trial. Your ability can only be used when someone is on trial, using -defend will change all guilty votes into positive, abstain remains abstain.
Using -prosecute will turn all innocent votes into guilty votes, abstain remains abstain
The message "a lawyer has convinced you to lynch/free [trialed player name]" will be displayed to everyone
There can be a setting to allow 2 or 3 defences or prosecutions.
There can also be a setting to allow the same player to defended more than once.

Investigator message: If it possible, rename the framer message to "your target is very skilled at providing false evidence, they are most likely a lawyer, but might be a framer"
If it is not possible, just keep the message and say that the lawyer is good at forgery.


Notes: I think is a great way to sometimes survive those messes where the confirmed mafia outnumber the town, while still not being powerful enough to end the mafia late game entirely
becuase, unlike the mayor, his ability can't get people on the stand, but only takes effect after they do.
And yes, I know how terrible this role can be in the hands of a griefer/skyper/idiot, but it is no more dangerous than a jailor in those hands.

This role hugely overlaps with mayor, although it is slightly different. I don't see the point of this role or why it is town core.

And to make it hard to use, turn all abstains into the opposite of what you're trying to get.

E.G 7 abstains, 4 guilties - Defend : 7 guilties, 4 innocents.

there are simmilar roles I know of that are mafia/neutral and just completely swap the vote counts.

Before reading the specifics on the suggestion, I really like this role and given that mafia has a trial system, its inclusion would be coherent.

The -prosecute ability is overpowered and overrides the individual vote thus rendering the player powerless to take a stand with his decisions.

It also conflicts with Mayors vote count and his ingame power which is already limited to this degree.

In this case, "Judge" would be a more approriate role name.

OBJECTION!

A judge needs hard evidence first before judging a verdict of a trial.

However in this trial, providing evidence are text based and not concreate. Someone faking sheriff is consindered false evidence or true evidence, visa versa to a real sheriff.

No evidence is actually "hard evidence", since all 14 other players can fake it just as easily as the rest. The only way to make it hard evidence is include your Last Will togheter with a -Suicide for a Role Reveal.

what about... at night he selects a target... that target can then not be put on trial (or lynched if no trial)? this wouldn't be clear until the voting was counted...
example:

1. Lawyer visit Sheriff at night
2. the following day an Executioner convinces the town to vote the Sheriff to trial (or lynch)
3. the town start to vote the Sheriff
4. enough votes to get the Sheriff on trial is achieved
5. a message is displayed for all players (similarly to Mayor reveal)
6. "A Lawyer protects (name) from being trialed/lynched"
7. all votes are removed from the Sheriff and voting continues

would make the role useful in games with no trial... and it's something somewhat new...
maybe it's be better as an evil role... i don't know...
it also give people they're beloved night-clicky-buttons...

I've been in a few.

Staring : Role/Ragequitters, some gets killed, "Omg let jailor work", more dies, 3v3 Maf prevents trial, Win.

In addition to Fail Executioner making trials transparrent, Witch / Survivor not voting anyone at all.

yeah maybe...
options similar to Janitor... allow for unlimited if host want it... or limit to 2-4 uses

it's rare... but having a role that only work if there is trial would be silly
