    Some notes for the next reunion game we do:

    1 - After some discussion, we're planning to make the game next year a lot more centric to Sc2Mafia and its identity. More flavor and relevance rather than a random setup we decided to make.

    2 - We'll also be likely aiming for a larger player count than 9. This allows for greater possibilities and variety in setup design.

    3 - We'll be aiming to be sometime during the summer of 2025 rather than September (perhaps signups opening in late may / early June and game start sometime mid/late July). Though most of our veteran players are not college students, I will still be at that time so it will be easier to host during the summer and frankly if happen to need more players then this could be appealing.

    There may be other notes I had, but I dont have them off the top of my head. Basically we're going to put more thought and effort into next year's game as compared to this year. This year the idea was suggested and we just haphazardly made a setup and a time. Next year we'll be more prepared.

    Addendums:

    1. All spectators are viewing the game uninformed. I realize speculation (i.e. angle-shooting) regarding the lack of modkill yesterday is unavoidable, since I took an action not prescribed earlier during signups, so I'm not going to moderate people if they end up discussing it. That said, I am going to be quite disappointed if the game devolves into discussing solely that.

    2. Someone asked if MYLO/LYLO is announced. It is not -- otherwise that would have given the game more avenues (or predisposed the game to head in certain directions) for negating the impact of the Spartacus/Loyalist roles.

    Addendums:

    I am not going to modkill @Marshmallow Marshall for two reasons.

    1. Some of the inactivity on Day 2 may have been contributed to by me. Earlier in my announcements I noted that I would @everyone upon a new SoD. This did not happen for SoD2, and as such I broke an implicit promise even if the ultimate responsibility for activity lies on the players. For example, SJ could have become active sooner since they apparently forgot about the game.

    2. One of the spectators for the game reached out to me and made an appeal that players could have intentionally aimed for the 10 post minimum and could have simply miscounted. Which, I will admit, is perhaps a bit lame to modkill over. HOWEVER, I strongly advise everyone to not employ tip-toeing the line on the rules as a strategy. Next time I see a 9 out of 10 post count, it is an unrelenting modkill. If you tip-toe the line and make a mistake, that is on you for choosing to tip-toe the line. The requirements for a post to count is extremely lax -- it could be fluff for all I care. So it should in theory be very difficult to mess up. No excuses.

    Addendums:

    1. It appears some people did not read my disciplinary process for the 10-min post rule. You can find it in the first post of the game, under the setup spoiler, towards the bottom. In some cases this rule may or may not be applied in the future if there is a hammer, subject to my discretion.

    2. Votes are sometimes messed up because the vote bot failed to realize the vote was inside in the quote. This most frequently happens when stacking quotes inside of each other. I will be double-checking votes to make sure that they are not unintended votes. They are rare in practice, and even rarer do they go unnoticed by players, but they do happen.

    Typical vanilla-like game (mafia/romans kill every night, mafia get to chat with eachother 24/7, etc). Most rules up to the discretion of the host, to be noted in signups. HOWEVER, the following may not be changed what-so-ever:

    "Spartacus" flips with no alignment and only reveals their role.

    The Roman Loyalist flips as if they were Spartacus.

    The game begins with a 24-hour night 0. There is no night kill for night 0. During this time the Romans may opt to swap their roles if they so wish, but when Day 1 begins they can no longer swap roles.

    Additions upon & since signups:

    - If there is a conflict between the Romans on who to kill, the Legionnaire has the final say.

    - On day 1 the voting will be plurality only. There-after a majority vote will instantly end the day.

    - Voting ties are decided by RNGjesus, which will be funny if Jesus offs the Romans in a tie. EXCEPT the tie is always in the roman's favor IF AND ONLY IF winning the tie means instantly winning the game. Otherwise it just feels bad for the Romans.

    - Self-votes disabled. (I didn't make that bold, the site did)

    - Minimum of 10 posts per day phase. I don't care how much or how little effort you put into those posts -- so long as posts were made.

    Disciplinary process for failure to meet minimum post requirement (experience has told us that a crystal-clear predictable process is important):
    Spoiler : process :

    1. Did a mid-day hammer occur?
    1a. Yes -> Subject to host's discretion. If it happened before the first half of a day phase, the rule will likely be waived/ignored for everyone for simplicity's sake. If not, the rule will be applied based on how much time has elapsed and how many posts were made by the min post violator(s).
    1b. No -> Go to step 2.
    2. Did the violation occur on Day 1?
    2a. Yes -> Private warning and requirement to make a minimum of 20 posts on Day 2 and, if failing that as well, go to step 2b.
    2b. No -> Automatic modkill -- past games have shown a lackluster pool of replacements and ineffective warnings beyond day 1 so unfortunately modkill is necessary.

    If a modkill for violating the minimum post rule occurs, then the flip occurs at the same time that the modkill did.

    If there is a majority hammer, for the sake of simplicity the following night will only be extended rather than arriving at the next day phase any time sooner. I will process the sudden EoD from the hammer when I reasonably can and am not in the middle of work.

    Nice. I'll get around to setting up the main discord server soon, so we all can have discord timestamps on stuff. The specific start time of Night 0 is unknown, but it'll likely be in the morning of Saturday and will last till 3 PM (again, timestamps will be in the discord) on Sunday.

    I've now got responses from everyone, everyone is still confirmed and no one drops out (except for one player who previously specified them dropping out if game does not fill). Thanks to everyone with their quick responses!

    Regarding the alternative setup: For people willing to stay in if we do not fill, people only specified either having no preference or a preference for having a game with 2 (nerfed) wolves.

    Given that only one person could drop out, we at minimum we will have 6 or 7 players (if we get 1 more) OR the game just fills. Which honestly makes having 2 wolves the most sense too -- I just asked in case more people would drop out if we would not fill.

    If we get one more sign (and not fill), i.e. have 7 players, the simplest option might be to re-balance the Spartacus setup with something like "Mafia cannot kill on the second night" since the game will be missing only one town player. That may not be a perfect solution, because the missing player will never get to do their own digging and express their views, but losing the 2nd night kill may be more impactful against the romans (given the 2nd night kill may be more circumstantially important) than losing the 1st night kill and hopefully that evens things out more.

    As for 6 player Spartacus, I may have to do a more customized overhaul of how the Romans operate. I don't know what that would be currently, but removing all the nightkills may not be enough in the town's favor given the limited length of the game with just eliminations alone and hence alternative approach. Perhaps some sort of circumstantial buff for the town or circumstantial nerf for the romans or something else. It gets tricky to balance smaller games while also not making them swingy.

    Regarding potential SoD/EoD changes:

    Essentially, I either leave work (internship) at 5pm at latest or leave for my college classes by 4pm at earliest depending on the day -- with no single day (except bi-monthly Thursdays) having both work and class. So ultimately there is no consistently "open" timing for me. That said, my official start date is a bit up in the air currently (my manager and I are waiting on other parts of the organization) and I might also be able to maneuver my lunch breaks into occurring around this time. So its possible that there may not be much disruption. However, I don't like making promises on possibilities. Hence,

    Theoretical (unconfirmed, subject to change) schedule of the game, from the perspective of East US Coast:

    Any abnormal phase lengths or changes will likely be noted either when night begins or Day begins. This is also assuming the game even lasts the full length.

    Sept 7-8, (Night 0, starts early with an extension because I got invited to a one-time event)
    Sept 8-10, (Day 1 -- will attempt to close thread at EoD but may be delayed)
    Sept 10-11, (Night 1 -- There will be a shorter night if I cannot close Day 1 at EoD)

    Just sidenote I will be checking in with people sometime soon (likely before end of weekend) to see if they're still committed. Depending on how things look I will be announcing the alternative setup that we will use if the game doesn't fill by the deadline. Most likely either a version with 2 mafia/wolves that are notably nerfed in some way or a setup with a solo evil.

    Regardless of how that plays out, I will soon have to announce some mild addendums to SoD/EoD because I just recently got my first internship (while also being a college student), which makes having a consistent hour every single day where I can dedicate to the game tricky. I will always have some time for the game, but that time potentially changes from day to day. Hence, hypothetical example of what I mean: if SoD occurs on X or Y day of the week, I'll have to delay it by 2 hours.

    Sc2 Mafia Arcade to Forum Mafia player launchpad

    (WIP -- We've tried copy/pasting a pre-made message a few times, but I kept getting IP banned due to some rare obscure filter . So I'm writing it manually. Will be finished over time.)

    This post is for players who, up till now, have primarily only played the "Arcade" version of mafia -- which is a custom game/map run on Starcraft 2 and is a more condensed version of Mafia. We'll be going over some of the key or notable differences between the two mediums, as well as....

    How to sign up for a forum mafia game (& what the heck is it?):

    Forum mafia games take place on, well, the forum! You may think of these as multi-day or (more often) multi-week events where people create posts on a thread at certain time frames. You don't actually need to set aside a specific hour of the day, nor need to play for several hours in one sitting; you only need to make sure you contribute some time every so often (the standard for this site is that you make at least 10 posts per Day phase).

    Since these games can have lengthy commitments, every forum mafia game has a signup period before it even begins. You can find them here. The first post (or "OP", the opening post) contains details about the game and often a link to what sort of setup it'll be using. If you want in, just post /sign or /in and that will let the host know. Keep in mind most games these days often have at least small Discord component for easier host/player communication and other stuff, so a discord account may be necessary!

    NOTE: I will not list nor count your /sign or /in if I don't know your discord account info, as this game will be run with a discord hub for convenient and effective host/player communication. We have a (general) FM discord here where you can easily find my account of the same name.

    Start Date: September 7th (night 0), September 8th (day 1).
    Phase Length: 48 hours for day, 24 for night Edit: This is still the intent, but since I got an internship things got a bit tricky. See here for a theoretical schedule.
    SoD/EoD: 3 PM, east US coast. Timestamps will be provided in the discord hub which will automatically show the exact time in your timezone for phase changes.
    Additional notes outside of the setup:

    On day 1 the voting system will be plurality only (i.e. elimination occurs at end of day with most votes). After day 1 majority (i.e. hammer) will be enabled alongside plurality for the rest of the game.

    Ties are decided by RNGjesus, which will be funny if Jesus offs the Romans in a tie.

    Typical vanilla-like game (mafia/romans kill every night, mafia get to chat with eachother 24/7, etc). Most rules up to the discretion of the host, to be noted in signups. HOWEVER, the following may not be changed what-so-ever:

    "Spartacus" flips with no alignment and only reveals their role.

    The Roman Loyalist flips as if they were Spartacus.

    The game begins with a 24-hour night 0. There is no night kill for night 0. During this time the Romans may opt to swap their roles if they so wish, but when Day 1 begins they can no longer swap roles.

    Alright. I got a simple-ish setup in the works and have shared it with Lumi/MM in our own FM staff chat. If I have somehow not gone insane over the past few months, we'll have something inspired by the "I'm Spartacus" scene and reasonably balanced or fair. A few interesting dynamics but overall no mechanics that would be difficult to understand.

    I'm currently thinking of a start date in early September, if we're assuming that some of the players will be college peeps (late august / start of September is when a lot of semesters begin). Any objections?

    My personal life philosophy, which I tend to apply to a lot of things nowadays internally, is to live as meaningfully as I can.     Added comments in salmon. Separately I often think extreme ATE is bad but I have a hard time drawing where the specific line is wrt my life philosophy. So I generally default to the thinking that ff its momentary (like 1-2 not-wall-post max) and doesn't discuss/suggest breaking rules I'll brush it off but if someone seems stuck in it then that's bad for the game in general even if faked.

    Went back to skim its end to refresh my memory. Honestly I think its more that we got a group of players who just didn't like the setup rather than something going wrong. I mean, the ghost went horribly wrong but it felt like the complaints were a lot more opinionated rather than based on something mechanical and I felt there wasn't a cohesive theme (such as, hypothetically, player agency) between all of the complaints.

    You can make a great game but at some point there will be people who genuinely dislike it.

    THAT SAID though, I've noticed these sort of situations tend to pop up when players don't know the whole setup and/or don't trust the host to run a balanced setup. In the past when I did a whole bunch of effort into "proper" compensation that one game, the complaints started showing up as soon as people didn't really know what I did. Inevitably I got a very similar situation where people thought what I did was either extremely pro-town or pro-mafia even after the game ended. It could just be a matter of secrecy reducing the ability of people to self-select-out, when they have differing views, for example.

    In essence, this is basically a setup that you can only run if either we (the reviewer) know what roles are behind the curtain or you have enough trust by us that we believe you'll make a good-faith attempt at running a decently-balanced setup.

    I can see an argument for this mechanic if the rebels (which I will refer to as "wolves") have extra killpower, but they are not guaranteed to have a vigilante power role. If they do not have extra killpower (beyond hyena and regular night attack) then its plausible their night actions will be completely unsuccessful due to this + the fact that towns would rarely have a reason to out that they are small/big. With that in mind, I can imagine a preety frustrating game for the wolves. The Hyena ability could help, but its more-so the fact that wolf actions could effectively fail for no reason other than a player being a certain animal type. Sure, they might be wounded, but that just means they now have to spend 2 kp or more just to kill a civilian or power role.

    It's not like in a vanilla game where there is the town, mafia, and a doctor. In that case there is a level of skill to it. If the night kill gets blocked, then the doctor played well and the mafia got outplayed. In this game where there's just animals small or large, you might lose the night kill just to bad luck rather than skill (because again, there is no reason for town to share what animal they are).

    Unfortunately with a game of this size I don't really see a way of making this interesting while reliably working/fun at the same time. If this were a mash then it could be implemented in, for example, ITAs. Outside of KRC we basically do not have any mashes on this site, which means any removal or addition of kill-power can be very impactful. Therefore it just adds a whole lot of swing ("swing" meaning a game that looks like a wolf win could easily go to wolf loss or the opposite) to the game and most of it is town-sided and likely to upset the wolves.

    IF you really want to keep it in, here are some ideas I think off the top of my head:
    1. Either give the mafia 2 standard night attacks or one single night attack that ignores the wound mechanic.
    2. Make wounds act like a poison. Instead of dying instantly, they die after day ends or something like that.
    3. ???? something else idk, if you go with any of these I will probably be checking them again and thinking them through

    In any case, however, I strongly suggest making the herbivore ability do something different, and maaayyyybbbeeee the predator one too. The herbivore ability is effectively a self-doc and might as well be considered a power role. It could be unbalanced with very limited wolf counter-play, plain and simple. The predator ability could be okay but if most of the town ends up being predators then that likely would make WIFOM too risky -- if a wolf fake-claims seeing a wound on player B but Predator #4 checked Player B at the same time then you have a Thunderdome at a minimum. Which is generally bad for the wolves.

    Lion ability is basically a vengeful (i.e. jester from arcade) but you don't actually die in using it. It could work, but in the context of the whole setup its not good for balance currently. It could be fine after changes to other parts of the setup though. We will see.

    Doctor is made a lot more powerful with the wound mechanic, and makes the whole idea of small/big even more town-sided if a doctor exists. Also informing a target if they were attacked or healed, while quite accurate in the real world, generally makes for terrible balance in the FM world because it gives town A LOT of valuable & powerful information. Very limited wolf counter-play with the feedback, even more so with the wound mechanic.

    Vanilla veteran is not something that exists in FM for two good reasons. One, roles entirely dependent on being visited (i.e. other people's choices) are very hard to balance -- it doesn't matter what effect they have. Two, you don't make killpower vary that wildly. I would just completely remove it. I do have a few ideas on how a veteran-like role could be balanced and not swingy, but it means making a very complex role and I don't think that's called for in a setup that seems inspired by vanilla roles from the arcade.

    Escort giving information is bad for the same reasons as doc giving information.

    In general, town should have the same amount of power-roles as the wolves. Although if you're keeping the wound mechanic, it might be wise to reduce the town power roles by at least 1 (i.e. if wolves have three power roles, town should have 2) to account for the town-siding nature of the big/small wound mechanic. Especially if it remains largely unchanged.





    This is just a few thoughts I have had. This setup will likely need more work in the future before it becomes balanced and fun. If none of my changes are implemented and (as MM notes) the neutral survivor is left in there I can see this being a very town-sided game. Wolves wining this will be very difficult and it will be quite frustrating for them.

    Just noting I do plan to weigh in on this conversation, as I had a similar experience as PoD's once as a host. Caveat though that was more-so due to me conducting compensation for rule breaks during that game (and ever since then have been very reluctant to do compensation). But this seems like it needs contemplation and focus by me and I don't really have spare time for that in the immediate future, but when I do this seems like an interesting conversation.

    I know Innovation (Music) from one FM game they tried, and have a general impression of who they are, so I'm going to lean in a bit on this one though I have never played with them in arcade personally.

    Of note is that they've made a similar point restore request back in 2023.

    I would say the 20k is probably exaggerated a mild bit due to:
    • The previously requested amount was 10k-20k, and later in the thread mentions point betting.
    • In the time since the previous request, the "arcade lobby status" has 247 results of them (Music#674)
    • Assuming the previous request wasn't fulfilled (or that they didn't recover a bank) getting 20k with just 247 games is relatively absurd based on some of the recent point restores I've looked at -- most of them seemed lower in the 20-30s though one was as high as 66 points per game played.

    I don't think the exaggeration is all that intentional though, based on my impressions of them and the fact that they didn't really get confrontational with the previous point restore request (which a deceptive/manipulative requester might do). Additionally, prior to the previous request, they had around 200 more games or lobbies recorded. If I had to guess, maybe they had points in the lower 10k range? Variability with this estimate could be wild though if they have a habit of doing bets or if they somehow got a recovery of previously-lost points. I don't doubt that they've lost points, possibly even twice, but I'm not so sure as to the exact amount they've lost due to circumstances such as loss of bank file. I vouch on this and hope that, pending input from players who have actually played with Music in-game, maybe we can achieve some sort of compensation for them even if it is not the actual amount that was lost.

    Hey all, not many people are signing up for this and while I normally would've switched to some other game to see if it would garner more interest, truth is I can't really afford to be running anything during the last week of January (the start of a busy semester) -- which is what its looking like to be even if I got the game filled. Downsizing is not feasible without obliterating the setup's unique characteristics.

    So I'll be looking for another host in a meantime. This signups is discontinued. I have one person noted as possibly hosting in January, but otherwise I don't have anyone else on my list and more would be welcome.

    Honestly maybe it wouldn't be so bad that, if we make another "nonstandard roles" setup, that in the first run of it we make it clear that its a trial run or whatever. Its much easier to find mistakes and potential issues when running a game than when its on the whiteboard and hasn't been run yet. Having people be mindful of it not being fully tested might make for a better experience.

    Just a thought I'm throwing out there.

    I can't even remember how long its been the way where I wasn't having you in my games, but its been long enough and you seemed to be genuinely engaged playing this and I really appreciate that

    Yeah. Also to be clear I'm not blaming just you, part of the blame lies on myself as well. I had a fair hand in scrutinizing each of the roles (in setup review) and I feel like I should've spotted that about the ghost thing. But, as you say, hindsight is 20/20.

    I do think that Ghost is perhaps not a fun role to play against as neutral though. That probably should've been considered for longer. You can't shut down a whole mafia or town team as ghost. But you can shut down a whole neutral faction which just seems unfair.
