►►Re: The line between obsession and dedication◄◄

"Obsession" is a word with a very specific, technical meaning, not to be confused with its general use of "thinking a lot about something". If one does not see the distinction between the two meanings, he is going to diagnose everyone with an OCD for having interests, which is obviously wrong.

Yzb, I have the exact same behavior with unrelated things while studying, and it doesn't make me obsessive, since it doesn't prevent me from doing what I have to do. And if you do literally anything but what you have to do and that it prevents you from doing what you have to do, you're not obsessive, you're just too lazy xD (and you're not alone in that...). That's just a matter of discipline. Easier said than done, I know, but I don't see another way - and self-diagnosing with """"OCD"""" certainly isn't one.

Frost Giant seems to have the good defectors from Activizzard, which is a very good thing. What they claim to be their goal is also highly interesting. If something comes out of it someday, I'm quite likely to give it a shot. As for Dreamhaven, well, I had to doublecheck what they had said on their page because I realized I didn't remember anything. When I doublechecked, I realized it was because they weren't saying anything...

I am curious though. Does any one else have this 'problem' or am I actually as abnormal as I think I am about it?
Fair. "Harm to an uncontrollable or very hardly controllable level" would probably be a better definition.

Something occurred to me the other day. I always saw immigration as a moral good at the expense of the accepting society. But that it also removed motivation for worse off society's to progress. The 'good' people who want a better life no longer need to create that life where they live. They simply leave that negative environment because a better one exists. On the same note the 'better off' locations control immigration to maintain their situation as 'better off.' I kinda figured it was natural.
But then a few days ago I realized this imbalance is preserved by controlled immigration. That if it did not exist society's could potentially equalize and along with it motivation for progress could be restored in the worse locations. This is a very socialist view to take with absolute loosers and winners in the short term but I kinda wonder how differently we could function as a species if those barriers we consider so normal did not exist. If they are something that causes the issues or if they are simply a result of human nature. Almost in line with Buddhism its almost like the drive to 'have' makes others 'have nots' or something.

Kinda half cooked thought there but I figured it was worth rambling about.

I also wonder where you can draw the line. Its easy when your talking about people as numbers to set a point where help will stop being given but it feels almost impossible to do so for the individual for me. I kinda feel like thats the entire conversation on immigration in general. I don't think as a society we could ever have an agreed point of limitation. That part does feel like just a factor of human nature now that I think about it.
Indeed, it's very difficult to tell someone who needs help "sorry, we're full" on an individual level. But not doing it causes even greater immoral results. That's why you have to think in terms of numbers when you're thinking about management for the State, without forgetting each number hides a person who has human needs to avoid falling into the trap of treating immigrants (or anyone else) like they're machines.

    ~~

About "porch pirates", here's more or less where I stand: https://medium.com/@swamy/https-medi...s-fc00aefc362a
Rule 5: "Concern with ethics increases with the number of means available and vice versa."
If one lacks the luxury of a choice and is possessed of only one mean, then the ethical question will never arise; automatically the lone mean becomes endowed with moral spirit. After all, what else could be done?

It's nothing new: Les Misrables already used this thematic long ago. So no, I don't think anyone is a lesser human being for being a porch pirate, as long as they actually need to be.

►►Re: The line between obsession and dedication◄◄

Obsession begins when something takes so much of your mental space that it harms your ability to do other things. If FM harms your ability to work (or perhaps more accurately, to live well economically speaking), study, or be with your family, then, like with literally anything, you should probably rethink your relationship with it. It's not specific to FM, to games, or to anything, really: there's a balance necessary to everything in life. For example, working so much that you cannot ever be with your family is unhealthy, and so is the opposite (since you're broke lol). The only exception I see to this is if you really see something as much more important than the rest because you have an highly important mission to accomplish. A president absolutely should care more about the people in his country than about his private life during his time in office, because it's what he's signing up for when he's running for presidency.
  26. ►►Re: Whats the appropriate ethical treatment in education for immigrants?◄◄

    - Give them appropriate services to help them learn the language if they don't already know it, which means additional courses if they don't pass a test. It's not discrimination: the same would happen to natives who don't pass tests.

    - Make sure there is no actual discrimination in the system and fine severely when compelling evidence is found to put a stop to it.

    - Give them the necessary school supplies for free if they cannot afford them. Without them, they can't learn well, and they shouldn't have to sacrifice stuff like food either.

If all of this is too complicated, too costly, or if the immigrants fail to get a job once they come out of the system because there are no more jobs, then it means the state cannot afford it and should simply tighten immigration restrictions by lowering the maximum amount of refugees and of economic immigrants who lack qualification. That is the only way to avoid problems for both immigrants and the state. Else, the state ends up with a ton of trouble (unemployment, high costs due to lack of ability to help immigrants, etc.), and so do the immigrants (poverty, inequalities due to lack of education, higher risk of criminality due to socio-economic conditions, etc.).

I have checked every ladder game from this season with a Serial Killer-ish role + mafia, and you never won any as SK, so nope . It probably was in a non-ladder game.
Points here are gained from playing in ladder games and winning in them, or by hosting them. You have 1.5 points for doing exactly that ^^. They may be traded for cookies at the nearest grocery store, as long as you pay the normal price for the cookies, too.

If there is a tomorrow and Martin is scum, and I'm not here to see it, chances are Rhand is his scummate. Look at his interactions with Martin (and especially Martin's posts about him) and you'll see. This implies Bahkieh is town, which is a bit weird... but it still makes more sense than Rhand being town if Martin is scum.

Helz is right here: it depends on you. If you choose to town hunt, you will inevitably form a town block and cooperate with the people inside it. You will not cooperate with people you do not trust for obvious reasons: if you don't believe someone pursues the same goal you pursue and even that he completely opposes it, you won't invite him to help you and open your heart to him, since he could ruin everything.

    ►►Re: Ozy's Scumhunting Spreadsheets - 2021 edition◄◄

The issue with Renegade's charts is that it either is only quantitative (amount of posts) or qualitative in a very subjective manner. In the first case, information given by the chart is very limited: a single post can be extremely charged for or against a person, or on the contrary, be incredibly weak. In the second case, so many explainations need to be written next to the chart for it to be understandable that it becomes much simpler and much better to simply explain with words. We don't even know whether the author is town or scum, which makes it hard to even trust him. I am not sure it was very useful in that game, either.

As for Ozy's charts, they suffers from an issue similar to the first one: they do not measure the magnitude of tells, nor do they take into account their context. Each attribute would have to be rated with "weak/medium/strong" or something similar to at least provide some nuance. Once again, many explainations would be required for the charts to be useful and convincing. It's an interesting tool to make sure you've covered every major tell a player could have when you're trying to read that player, but I doubt it's viable as a way to share reads. Sticking to making clear, uniform and relatively concise lists of reads that include the criteria you want to emphasize on is simply better, because it conveys more content while being more accessible and while forcing you to make your conclusions unambiguously clear.

Rhand to me is not the scummiest, it's Martin. I wouldn't be super happy with a Rhand lynch because by themselves the slot doesn't look like much either way, it's only scummy by association and while I agree that Rhand would be the most probable overlap in either scenario, I can't entirely rule out Martin + Bahkieh. So my vote would likely be for Martin.

Although thinking about this, honestly, even if we lynch Rhand and we're right I'd still go for Martin most likely the next day so it doesn't really matter which way around we do this. In the end the likeliest pairings are MM + Bahkieh or Martin + Rhand from my POV and the latter is scummier to me than the former.

I'm just not sure if we will be able to lynch Rhand. If we're right then the question is if Bahkieh can wake up from their slumber to change their vote. Other than that I guess I'm more or less behind that.
The point about the ability to form a consensus on Rhand is a pretty good one... Bahkieh doesn't exactly look like he's planning on existing. I wonder if that's not specifically his plan, though. I'm uncomfortable with the idea that Bahkieh is a weird townie who successfully placed his vote on a scum without explaining it and then just vanished at LYLO; it doesn't seem right. But when associations are taken into account, Martin/Rhand becomes pretty much the only thing that makes sense, minus maybe Bahkieh/Rhand, which would be sad. I guess making a mistake today or tomorrow doesn't change much, since we lose either way, so we might as well lynch for who we think is scummy and who we can form a consensus against.

We probably should wait for others to chip in before voting, though. Or at least hope they chime in.

Because it looked to me like Helz called hidden WIFOM a gambit, and blink called gambit a clever scheme to gain info.

For something to be a gambit you'd have to either risk or sacrifice something.
A "clever scheme" in Blink's words is something like a weird fake claim about rolecard specificities in hidden setups, or made up feedback. That is absolutely risky, but that may pay off later.

I tend to agree with Blink's conclusion: gambits hurt town more often than not, because they're rarely well executed. And when they're well executed, town doesn't always play correctly around them. That doesn't mean gambits should be straight up banned from everyone's playbook, though: good gambits, i.e. the ones that follow the "gambit rules" in the OP or at least my rule about benefits > risks, can be very pro-town. They just have to be appropriate and well prepared.

Reviving this because we don't have that many days left. We should come to a consensus that unites the town so that scum can't just come and pile up on someone at EoD and cause a tie or straight up with the game (and that consensus has to be on the right person, obviously). @NoctiZ @Bahkieh @MartinGG99 @Rhand , my proposal is that we lynch Rhand today, as explained in my last post.

General reminder: don't forget Mafia is a team game, and when you're making a gambit as town, you MUST make sure it's good for town. Else, you're hurting your team and yourself.

That's a little extreme: some gambits are perfectly valid and good, they just have to be well planned. You bring an important point up, though: punitive meta is a thing. If people start pulling stupid gambits all the time, we're going to end up with punitive meta against gambits. That would be sad, but that would also be a natural reaction.

And Renegade, people don't get notifications for quotes in the FM section. Imagine the spam if you received a notification every time someone quoted you in a game lol.

Aye, playing for everyone's fun including yours is the most important. That involves at least trying to win. Fun also lies in skillful plays and theoretical discussion, though, but that's not mandatory if you don't enjoy it!

No it's not. It's pretty rare town lies are pro-town - at least mechanical lies. Lying on your reads to draw conclusions from people's reactions to them is perfectly valid everywhere and won't get you scumread (I did it on MS, it worked). It's not too restrictive and prevents the meta from going into INFINITE WIFOM REEEEEEEEEEEEEE like what had happened to us. Also, you don't have to antagonize anyone who has a different point of view .
