So it's to my understanding that mafia will autokick players with SC2 starter editions. Is there a way to go around this? I want my friends to play without having to buy SC2.

Yep it's still happening. Can't play a single game. I did however have one host that set up a bot that automatically kicked gstrics smurfs/bots from lobby instantly. It almost worked, but a couple of his smurfs were able to join at the last second, filled the lobby to 15, and the game just auto started. Still need to figure out another way to remove the cancer that is killing this game.
