QuickTopic is shutting down
QuickTopic is shutting down permanently on December 11th of this year.
What this means for us:
- Any archived games that used QuickTopic will have those aspects of the game lost forever
- Any future games should not use QuickTopics
The Discord server template is just strictly better than QuickTopic for pretty much every use, except for one.
The one thing QuickTopic does well is anonymous chats. Currently I am unaware of any good way to have anonymous chats on Discord, and with QuickTopic shutting down a new solution will need to be found.
Re: QuickTopic is shutting down
Ah, you beat me to it...
- For the sake of archives: If you think there is a game that really deserves to be archived entirely, which means including its night chats, then you have a month and a half to copypaste those chats in a safe place. I know some people really care about archives, so there's that. It is obviously unrealistic to save everything, but saving a few memorable important chats could make sense.
- For the sake of anonymous chats: Hmm, this is annoying. Surely QuickTopic isn't the only place of its kind to have ever existed, though, right? Also, there is always the option of making more than one Discord server for a game (one per chat), or perhaps more practically, using the "give slot 1 role 1 and give role 1 the right permissions" method to have all private chats in one server. For anonymous Discord accounts, the solution would be... making alts. I don't see how else it could be done.
Re: QuickTopic is shutting down
@Oberon
made a discord bot that allowed for anonymous chat.
Solutions like that are not feasible for most hosts though. :S

Unfortunately I no longer have the code for it. But now I’m thinking of rewriting it.
Re: QuickTopic is shutting down
There is always the idea of making your own forum (there are free options available online). Then set permissions so only certain user groups can see certain channels. I did it once. The link is on the Sengoki Jidai page

But like, I don't think using bots is feasible for most hosts? Like idk anything about that sort of stuff. Don't you need like a computer to have it permanently run it on?
I'm sure someone will think of something when the actual need arises. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yea you do. You could run it in the background when night starts, then shut it down when night ends. Would be nice to somewhat automate this I guess. Problem is, if you’re running it on your computer, what do you do when there’s a storm in your area and Internet goes down? Or what if there’s a power outage.
Hypothetically, you could download some minimal OS and a virtual machine to run it in and just run the bot in that VM. If you could download a batch system (is that possible?) then you could just schedule the bot to run every X hours.
OOOOORRRR you could just run it every X hours and put it to sleep regularly.
Re: QuickTopic is shutting down
i posted this in the discord:
https://www.disposablechat.com/
haven't tested to see if the chats persist long enough but it looks like it should work?

Another community (The Syndicate) has used Chatzy in the past.
I created an example anonymous chat: https://www.chatzy.com/24629350635804
You get the invite link either by sending an email invitation to yourself OR, when you create the room, click the room's name in the top left (it's bolded and underlined I think) OR just copy the web address (I think that works as well).
HOWEVER:

Also, chat rooms not used for 14 days are considered outdated and deleted automatically.
You have to keep that in mind. If no one pops up in the above link for 14 or more days, it'll get deleted.

Oh yeah Docker fulfils those conditions. Just read about it. Never really knew what Docker was.

Tell people to pm me and I'll pass on the message

Anonymous chat bot in discord isn't an option anymore since it's now known that it's accessible to see who can view what channels - hidden or not.
Website alternatives is the only way :>
Re: QuickTopic is shutting down
Or force ammirus to make a live chat service on the website which can be customized to meat all functions needed.

That's probably either very difficult or takes large amounts of time and effort, but probably both.
I imagine it's not just adding new stuff and includes rewriting existing stuff?
(I'm just babbling about things I know nothing about tbh)

This is actually half correct. It's difficult AND takes a large amount of time and effort. But you're right in imagining that it is adding new stuff and rewriting existing stuff.
It's also never going to happen.

Best first step is to create a new forum. But there's so much history here that it's an extremely uphill battle to move to new forum. It'd be like a multi month unpaid job.
Re: QuickTopic is shutting down
I dont really see this as a big issue. Anon chats can be hosted anywhere. You could simply make accounts on any free game server if you wanted to do it ghetto and logging the chat is as simple as copy/paste into the thread post game. With few exceptions Anon chats are not often 'active' anyways.

I share this stance. Plus, copypasting doesn't even need to be done, since there are sites that allow you to make anon chats. Aamirus linked DisposableChat earlier.
