When did masks become political?
Seat belts are not political. Nobody is protesting over having to wear seat belts and the fact that their freedom is infringed by a "click it or ticket" law in which they can receive a citation for simply not wearing one?. Why not? Why is a mandate to wear a mask during a public health crisis any different?

Re: When did masks become political?
Daily reminder that if Trump hadn't politicized wearing masks for no reason then many tens of thousands of Americans wouldn't have died

Oh boi.
Here we go again.

I think you know the answer. Seat belts weren't introduced during this horrible current Internet era and didn't incur the wrath of the pro-plague moms. It was impossible for them not to become political and stigmatized.

Re: When did masks become political?
I stand by the opinion that someone probably made a homophobic joke about wearing masks and everyone stopped wearing it, just like the rollerblades.

So why aren't texting and driving laws political? Those are new.

Right but the question is why isn't it a political issue? Like if you tell someone "you shouldn't text and drive" or "wear your seat belt", they aren't going to respond with "muh freedom". At least that hasn't been my experience.
They recognize that if they get caught doing it they are going to get ticketed for it. Yet no protests or freaking out about it.

Like this you mean?
Anyway yeah, the masks are on a whole other dimension. It's a shame people who refuse to wear masks where required don't simply hit their heads and die. They just spread the plague and continue being horrible.

Because the general people is just dumb. Stupid. There's no other explaination lol. The issue is that they can still spread the disease, so people are a bit more insisting than when it comes to seat belts lol, so half-smart people wanting to gain the support of dumb people responding "muh freedom" go out and scream "OUR FREEDOM!!!!".

Re: When did masks become political?
What's wrong with giving the people a choice? Why should people be obligated to wear a mask? God gave us air so we can breathe air. By breathing with a mask, we are disobeying God. By wearing a mask, we are breathing CO2 because CO2 gets trapped in the mask. Stop listening to Bill Gates. He is trying to kill us all.

So please take this as coming from someone that hates Trump but no.
There were totally tons of Americans that took significant issue with being given tickets for not wearing a seat belt. I really don't care about masks one way or the other but I do think its 100% fucked to demand someone wears a seat belt or has to pay some stupid tax. The function of the government is justified when it protects people from other people but it is in no way justified in protecting people from themselves out of obligation.
And please keep your politics local.

Re: When did masks become political?

You're thinking too small-picture with the seat belts. If someone in a car isn't wearing a seat belt, they can become a projectile and fuck other people in the car up. People not wearing seatbelts also costs hospitals much more because they get fucked up more in accidents, which ends up costing the public more, especially in countries with a functional healthcare system.

"Critics of laws like the requirement to wear seat belts characterize them as the work of "nanny government," interfering with the right of people to conduct their lives as they choose. There is an argument for that perspective, but it remains that people who ignore these laws (motorcycle helmet laws are a close relative) still expect society to take care of them when they are injured while ignoring laws intended to protect them. If the helmetless motorcycle rider suffers a traumatic head injury and has no health insurance (and one could argue that his health insurance shouldn't cover him if he acts recklessly and contributes to his own injury), we don't drag him over to the curb and wait for him to expire. We transport him to the hospital and expend considerable resources to save his life, even though there is little expectation he will be able to pay for this. This increases the cost of health care for all of us. Therefore, there is a "greater good" reason for seat belt and helmet laws that penalize drivers from their own neglect, because their negligence has an impact on everyone."

Forcing people to wear seat belts saves people and insurance companies money.

Masks were largely politicized because of Trump's refusal to wear one, and how he made fun of others (like Biden) for wearing one.
However, Trump doesn't, and in fact, can't drive. Therefore he can't have a stance on texting and driving, hence it doesn't become politicized by his cultists.

Re: When did masks become political?
Libertarians politicize everything that government wants to do. The anti-intellectualism and romanticism of libertarians in states with poor education will be the downfall of its nation.
Trace the issue back to anything concerning education, especially in maths and sciences where there is a semi-understanding of scientific principles, but large misunderstandings of its fundamental principles.
Climate change? Anti-intellectualism in the favour of the economic benefits of conventional energy industries.
Gun control? Romanticism in the favour of the constitution, forefathers, and civil liberties.
Vaccines? Anti-intellectualism and romanticism in the favour of civil liberties and "critical thinking".
Science = bunch of theories. Oversimplification that theories can be wrong, but really are built upon years of known research because of the black swan theory.
