i just got on mafia today and saw this seemd like DR is getting more serious about this shit. If blizzard ups the limit could he just add names to a list and not use codes at all?

This is to prevent people from using stolen donor codes.
There was talk that blizzard will increase the script size limit in the HotS expansion.
The reason why the donor-code system is so complicated is because of Starcraft II's lack of player-name and name-changing trigger support.
In the editor, you cannot declare or store player names as strings, meaning that he can't just simply add a list of donors and patrons via triggers. Another problem is the lack of name changing support, but Dark has gotten around this by using a custom-chat system. If Starcraft II supported player-name triggers, it would REALLY help map developers such as myself create role-playing games without having to create a complex chat-log system.
This is in fact a very likely speculation. There won't be a Blizzcon 2012 because they want 100% of their resources on HotS and Diablo III. So HotS will be a bigger game, with a better editor, an updated editor, and of course a bigger script size to use all those new tools.
Did you know the scale of the maps are increasing as well?
It is possible to use IDs for donor codes like we do for the ban list.
The problem is we dont have much room before the script limit and we need to save that to ban cheaters.
