FMXII - Day 0 - Prologue: Darkness Descends

Adelaide. Once a small town nestled within the bosom of a crossroads leading north and west to the golden lands of the Catholic Hierarchy, and to the south and east into the Asian empires and the lands of silk and sands, is now a bustling trade city. Drawing in exotic goods from all over the land mass of Eurasia, it's crowded city-streets quickly became home to all sorts of miscreants, ranging from thieves to murderers. Crime flourished just as strongly as it's commerce, and more often than not the law turned a blind eye as pockets were lined just heavily enough to cause fleeting distraction when it was required.

It was under this guise that the vampire clans known as The Nosferatu and The Children of the Night, once whole under the sire-age of Count Dracula himself, came to reside in the city of Adelaide. Drawn to a city ripe with hunt and plunder, The Nosferatu quickly made an impression within the underbelly of Adelaide, and for a time they had their fill of men whom wandered too carelessly away from the safety of the guards' dominion. The Children of the Night, on the other hand, came to bask in the noble high life, lavished in the finest silks and far removed from the eyes of the common-folk. Using their extensive knowledge as political masterminds under the tutelage of Count Dracula himself, they quickly seized hold of the city, toying with the boundaries of human jealousy, and greed, in a mindfully graceful march to eventual destruction.

But this oblivious co-existence was simply bound to end, and eventually it did. As The Nosferatu grew bored of preying on foolhardy wanderers, they began to turn towards other prey, first the crime syndicates that had formed(much to the relief of the guards, whose work lessened and prestige grew as they lay claim to the deed themselves), and eventually wealthy merchants. The news of brutal murder swept across the city, men and women drained of blood and brutalized beyond recognition. And this news fell quite hard upon the ears of one person in particular. Anya Nighthawk quickly realized that her twisted brethren had found a home within the undercity, and in the weeks that followed this realization had escalated into an invisible war between the two clans.

Reports of humans drained of blood continued to circulate through the town, and as unrest grew, Lord Deston of Adelaide had no other choice but to request aid from the Vatican, to investigate the matter and quell it quietly.

The request did not fall on deaf ears, and a few weeks later, under the shadow of night, an inquisitorial force lead by Father Matthew Fairbrooks, Archbishop of the Faith arrives in order to investigate the reports of heretical murder. Amongst his retinue, ten paladins of the Brotherhood of Saint Evans, as well as seven bishops well-versed in God's message against heresy. In cooperation with Lord Deston, Father Matthew quickly begins to scour the city in search of heresy.

At the same time, however, a man garbed in an onyx-black traveling cloak arrives at the outskirts of town, following the news of heresy in Adelaide. As he grew closer, he knew he had found his unruly children, those whom had imprisoned him and left. Well, he would teach them a lesson they would never forget. He would teach him that his name was still one to be feared. To this end, the man known as Count Dracula committed the single-greatest heresy in history. He cursed Adelaide to descend into artificial darkness, separated from the world beyond, from the grace of God.

The sudden coming of night threw the city into immediate hysteria. The realization that the sun still hovered, clouded in a fog of darkness high above the sky merely redoubled the effort. Cries that God himself had abandoned Adelaide burned across the city like a wildfire, and soon the city itself was ablaze with mindless looting and rioting. Factions of citizens arose quickly, lead by men all claiming to have the power to lead his people against the heathens that had brought the wrath of God upon them.

In the ensuing chaos, The Nosferatu and the Children of the Night took the opportunity presented to them, and the war was no longer invisible. Vampire fought against vampire in the streets of Adelaide, and thousands found themselves in the crossfire. Countless died, and when Father Matthew and Lord Dalton's forces attempted to quell the rioting, and defeat the heretical monsters that had descended upon the town, many of their retinue perished. Father Matthew joined his God on the fourth day of fighting, and Lord Dalton followed shortly there-after without the support of the church's knights that Father Matthew commanded.

Upon the coming of dusk on seventh day, those that had survived the madness that had so suddenly descended upon Adelaide, were asked to gather in front of the Adelaide Cathedral the following morning, to meet in assembly to discuss the events that have transpired. The punishment for not complying is death.

Naturally, you decide to attend.
