Tension lingered in the town square that day. Suspicion wafted in the air, wavering between people, but ultimately never hit the ground. An hour passed. Two hours passed. Four hours passed. A bold proclamation formed the center of discussion, but nothing became of any topic brought up at the assembly. Seven hours passed. Ten hours passed. Finally, the Mayor abruptly stood up, his face flushed red and contorted in a figure of agitation. "We're done here! It seems you ignorant buffoons cannot make up your minds on who to accuse, and now we are facing the hours of dusk. You have failed! This assembly is a failure! I have half a mind to replace the lot of you with commoners from the lower district." The Mayor was met with uncomfortable gazes from the nobles assembled at the Delia square. "Clearly, I have promoted the incorrect approach. So tomorrow, we will have a mandatory execution of four of you sinning deceivers."

Shocked stares and harsh gasps cut through the dusky square toward the rancid Mayor. He paused, then continued. "We must show these criminals and heretics that we mean business! This assembly shall demand respect! Meeting adjourned." The Mayor stormed off as quickly as his stubby legs could carry him. The assembly stood, frozen, in stunned silence. After a minute of nervous glances, the first citizen started toward his home. The energy finally broke; exhaustion from eleven hours of standing and stressful debating set in and forced all discussion to a close. Everyone returned to their homes, and only some fell fast asleep, in the following hour.

...perhaps it was simple indecisiveness that led to a bloodless trial. It is more likely, however, that the lack of accusation was a product of primal fear. Actions are met with equal, opposite reactions; this is a basic law of nature. If someone were to be lynched, then any one of them could be lynched. Perhaps the assembly realized -- and subconsciously avoided the fact -- that those who kill must prepare for themselves to be killed.

Perhaps, then, the Town is tragically mistaken. Death comes swiftly, not just to those who create death, but merely to those who are still alive...
