View Full Version : Would you pay for mafia?

Blizzard plans to give developers the option of custom mapmakers monetizing their maps when Heart of the Swarm comes out in 2050 (knowing blizzard). I was wondering since mafia used to have a donor system that semi monetized the game would people support and pay for a fully monetized mafia game? I could realistically see DR doing it.

It would be sad if that would happen, but I would probably do it, since it's practically the only custom game I play, as long it doesn't cost too much.

Totally disagree. This will kill maps. Maps need players.

Make the map free. But let in-game stuff to be purchasable. Like, ugh... colored names...

Trouble with paying for maps is that there will be problems if we want to kick and ban the paying griefers/cheaters.

This. A LoL system of monetization has proven time and time again to be more effective than the SC2 system. There will always be those people who are willing to slap down 60 bucks for a new game, but allowing people to get a balanced game for free allows for a larger community that can grow and support the playerbase. In-game incentives like models, hats and name customizations should be purchasable so that dedicated users can support the game through means that don't break the game.

I agree to the post above me.

This can also extend to the new Blacklisting and Preferring features.

One potential problem, however, is that people who earn the points to unlock these features NOW will likely be angry is they suddenly have to pay for something they already had for free.

While it'd be great for DR to have income for all of his hard work, I'm not sure how he could monetize of the map without pissing large groups of users off.

Apparently, I also agree to the post that is now above me.

Yes, a system that already exists has proven countless times that it is more effective than system that hasn't been released and is more apt comparison to app purchasing or itunes song purchasing than F2P v P2P.

Well... to be fair, their model works for single player maps. Then again, besides SC1+BW remake, I'm not aware of other notable solo maps for SC2. WC3 used to have quite a number of nice single player maps.

Storyline and script sells for single player maps. Social interaction for multiplayer maps.

I love how it says "banned" under his name, right next to where you read that lol.

I'd pay for it, but he better give me back the right to a long name, for fuck's sake.

Sigil is standalone.

Also, I will not make Mafia part of the map marketplace. If there are in-map purchases, I might make some new features pay-exclusives and just give all the old donors access to that stuff for free, but the map itself will always be free to play.

DR, I've got a GREAT idea for implementation of a pay scheme for naming benefits, which also reduce the graveyard-killings. The current character limit is 20.

1st extra = $1
2nd extra = $2
3rd extra = $4
4th extra = $8

So forth, basically multiplied the last number by two to get the next amount. But 4 extra at $8 doesn't mean "might as well get the combo deal!" It means that each subsequent character costs more ITSELF. So want 22? $3. Want 24? $15.

So the incentive for DR is that if you ever want to troll hard, the amount you'd be paying would be hard-earned. But the other thing is, you cannot be banned for using it, as you've paid hard cash for the right to troll with long names, in this scenario.

no because then the playerbase would drop 95% and it would be very hard to get a game

A wise decision by DR. There are too many free alternatives out there.

I feel that you don't even like the idea of paid Mafia.
I agree.

I just find the idea of paying for content after paying for a game silly.

We are not even purchasing bragging rights in the first place.
