Though Nicholas II was not a very popular leader, certainly not as popular as his predecessors, it was undoubtedly his authority that pushed the town onward, and now in his absence, the city descended into utter chaos. Although the State Duma had quickly taken over all the actions that the Tsar used to handle, they were unable to hold the same amount of authority, and without this authority, the citizens began to disobey the laws and go against direct orders. Eventually, after heated discussion, a bout of fighting broke out, and despite the best attempts of the Petrograd police force, the brawl descended into a full riot. The anger and confusion of the previous few days was suddenly released in a climax of violence, with hit and blows being exchanged instead of words and accusations. Although the Duma did not have the same authority as the Tsar, they did have control over the army, and were thus able to forcefully stop the riot and restore peace. Several of the injured were taken to a nearby hospital and treated. One of these victims, Arkadi, who was mercilessly beaten by several people who were certain of his guilt, was declared dead on arrival for severe head injuries. In his jacket, investigators discovered a length of rope, a gagging cloth, a German passport, and an officer’s pistol. After further searching, they discovered a roll of film, miraculously whole despite Arkadi’s brutal beating, stashed away in a pocket. Upon hearing of this news, the citizens of Petrograd erupted in cheer. Despite the blood that now covered the streets and their broken bones and torn flesh, the citizens felt better than they ever had, knowing that despite the loss of the Tsar, there was still hope for them.
