Nicholas II did not expect such vigorous discussion and accusations in the first gathering. Almost as quickly as it had started, Gavril was accused of being a German spy, and within minutes the whole crowd was demanding his execution. The government trusted the crowd’s unanimous decision, and sentenced Gavril to death.
Gavril was dealt with quickly and efficiently, shot on the spot by the guard, the way all spies are executed. But the angry crowd was not satisfied with merely his death; they stormed into his house, looking to find the rest of the German invaders. To their surprise, they found his frightened wife and children, not any German spies, and, upon further investigation, they found that his room only contained surgical tools and bandages. The crowd quickly realized they had made a grave mistake.
Gavril’s role was Doctor.
