Getting into the city wasn’t as hard as surviving in it. The small amount of supplies that they could bring were starting to diminish, and getting more wasn’t yet possible. Granted, everyone on the team could speak Russian, but their accent would quickly give them away, and so they were forced into constant hiding during the day.
The plan was to seize the city from the inside. Killing the Tsar and his generals would cause a lot of panic and confusion among the citizens of Petrograd, heart of the Russian Empire, and that is when they would signal the troops to strike. The timing was good, they thought. The Tsar was already dealing with a few problems of his own; hunger and discontentment was growing in the hearts of the simple folk, and many were talking about rebellion.
Meanwhile, in a study lined with bookcases filled with books on every political subject imaginable, Vladimir Lenin was sitting thinking to himself. Lenin was forced to change his last name from Ulyanov, due to fear of prosecution from the Russian Empire, and now used it as a pen name. He had just finished another book on his political theory, dubbed “Marxism-Leninism” by his supporters, but had other things on his mind. Were books and pamphlets really the way to overthrow the Tsar?
He walked over to his typewriter and started to write a letter to a man named Joseph Stalin. Lenin had noticed Stalin’s name several times in the newspapers, always being referred to as a terrorist working against the Empire. Lenin had noticed in today’s paper that Stalin had been captured and exiled, and wanted to offer him a safe haven in return for his help. If Lenin was to truly overthrow the Tsar and free the peasants from the oppressive clutches of the Empire, he needed to start using force instead of words. He thought of his late brother, Aleksandr, and grinned at the thought of following in his footsteps. Once the letter was finished and mailed off, he took his newly-written novel and set out into the night, looking for members to join the cause of the Bolshevik Revolution.
