Day 1 - First Snow

May 20, 1887

Pacing back and forth in the family room, made warm by the crackling fireplace, a young Vladimir Ulyanov was deep in thought. He knew he ought to have been studying for his final examinations, but there was one horrible thing he could not get off his mind, and studying in such a state of mind would not have been very useful. Occasionally glancing in the other room to check on his two younger siblings, Vladimir thought about his brother and what he had done. His older brother, Aleksandr, had been involved in a plot to kill the current Tsar of the Russian Empire, Alexander the Third, and was caught before it came to fruition. Some of his comrades were pardoned for the great crime, but Aleksandr, being the mastermind of the whole ordeal, was convicted of treason, and thus sentenced to death. Today was the day he was to be hanged, and it was this that troubled Vladimir so. He had picked up a great amount of ideas from his brother, and had given them some thought. Vladimir thought of socialism and communism as an interesting political theory, and at times even sympathized with the poor and impoverished peasants, repressed by the Tsar. He thought of the books that were seized by the police when his brother was arrested. There was but one name in particular that stood out among the authors...

But just before Vladimir could recall the name, he felt as though a great wind had rushed by him. He glanced quickly at the clock, though the time did not register in his mind. Although Vladimir had never believed in any sort of religion or spirituality, he somehow knew with all certainty that Aleksandr was dead. He looked at the fireplace, and could not help thinking of the books that used to be his brother’s life, reduced to a burning heap by the Tsar’s agents. Suddenly, he remembered the name of the author that his brother worshipped as a god, and for what seemed like hours, he could think of nothing but the name “Karl Marx”.


November 1, 1917

It had been 2 weeks since the battalion had settled under Petrograd. Things weren’t looking good for the Germans; the Russians had held their own and the German position was long discovered. It was only a matter of days before somebody flanked them, and they would no doubt be captured or killed on the spot. Over the past two weeks, many troops deserted, and morale had dropped to dangerously low levels.

In the officer tent, full of thick smoke from ongoing fighting, four men sat around a table. The dark circles around their eyes indicated that they haven’t slept in a few days, and the dark stubble around their chins only accented the stressful appearance of these men.
“So, there is no going back” concluded a young, nervous man, who appeared to be of the lowest military rank among the men.
“There is something we can do, though” answered the general with a hint of resignation in his voice, “But it is madness.”
“I’ll take madness over certain death, sir,” shouted the third man. His hearing was damaged by his own careless handling of explosives, “Even if it leads to certain death, anyway. We can’t just give up after coming such a long way!”
The general was silent, contemplating. In a few moments, he nodded.
“I’ll ready the team, then,” said the man who had been silent thus far. “We shall take only our bravest.”
And on that note, the meeting disbanded.

Was wrong about the post count. That STILL does not prove that they didn't know each other from seeing that they are both on the German list. It just confirms for 5 minutes that Svetlana posted on the wrong forums. 5 minutes is a very short period of time, and I highly doubt Yakov saw the post and knew of his name due to that. I still am suspicious of Svetlana and Yakov, but more so Yakov. That should be the jailer's target tonight.
