View Full Version : Role Suggestion: Gambler!

The electromagnetic waves in my brain just keep sparking! This time, another creative role is presented to the Mafia community - Gambler!
Role name: Gambler
Description: A person who devoted his very own life to gambling so much that he made a pact with devil of gambling.
Alignment: Neutral/Benigh
Abilities: During a night, you may pick three different players and attempt to guess their exact current roles. If even one of the roles is guessed wrong, the Gambler will commit suicide. Howewer, if all of the three roles matched correctly at night...

Something interesting will happen to the chosen people and Gambler will gain night immunity for that night.
Goal: Get a Jackpot by correctly guessing roles of three people simultaneously.
Special: You can make more then one Jackpot, but you cannot choose any of the three previous people. If you make a second Jackpot, your points will be doubled. If you fail to get a second Jackpot, you will die and lose your win condition. You cannot also target revealed Mayor to make a Jackpot.
Investigation report: Same as Citizen
Host Options:
The chosen people will die during Jackpot by some strange means (Dice 6)
The chosen people's roles will be revealed after Jackpot (Dice 5)
The chosen people will turn into Cultists during Jackpot, (cannot recruit) (Dice 4)
The chosen people will be roleblocked during Jackpot (Dice 3)
The chosen people will be switched randomly during Jackpot (Dice 2)
Nothing happens to the chosen people during Jackpot (Dice 1)
Anything random from the above (see the dice result)
When Gambler gets a Jackpot, everyone will be notified of this. They will also see the dice result during Jackpot. Since Gambler can get a Jackpot by correctly guessing people's roles, players must be even more careful about revealing their roles. Because of the potentially disastrous effects of the Jackpot, both Town and Mafia will try to find and kill or lynch Gambler wherever possible. Even after Jackpot happens already, there may be a possibility of second Jackpot, so keep hiding your true roles from Gambler. Keep in mind, the more people keep claiming roles, the more easier it will be for Gambler to get a Jackpot. Try to pose as alternative role (for example if you are Lookout, say that you are Detective instead). If you manage to fool the Gambler, he'll end up suiciding himself instead of getting a Jackpot while trying to guess your role. Mafia can contribute to that fairly well, assuming Gambler will try to guess mostly Town roles. Role change (Mason, Cultist, Disguiser, Student/Amnesiac) can also ruin Gambler's plan, although Masons thenselves are an easy target for Jackpot, if they carelessly start to reveal themselves one after another.
So? Care to try your luck as Gamber?

This one is too weird, and roles with random effects are discarded immediately I believe. Yes it's a troll post, but the first troll suggestion you made (Skyper) was actually a fairly interesting concept 8)

In the hands of Yayap, or a culted gambler, this would be amazing.

If a Gambler becomes a teammate of someone (Cultist or Student) then he cannot pick that person from making a Jackpot. For same reason he cannot target revealed Mayor. A real gamble is worth only on people whose roles are not known - otherwise there will be no Jackpot. For the same reason Gambler also loses once any faction wins the game - if he did not manage to make Jackpot in time.
Also, random effect of Jackpot is only a Host Option. If you don't like random, then what effect of Jackpot should be? Will it be one of the six above? Or you can suggest something different?
In my original idea, the three people whose roles are guessed correctly by Gambler would die. (which I made as Dice 6 later).
From Gambler's point of view, Jackpot is high risk, high reward. You make one mistake in your guess and you will die. You guess everyting correctly and reap your reward - an Jackpot event. Even so, you must survive enough nights before you will be able to deduce roles of three people that are still alive. And you might be fooled by Mafia (naming one person as Investigator, who is actually a Consigliere). I already told you that doing a Jackpot will be very difficult. Gambler is not Soul of the Beast, but something very close anyway, considering he can make more than one Jackpot. Of course with second Jackpot comes even greater risk - after all, if you won already, why would you bet your life again?

dude think about it before writing it off. gambler gets culted, cult also has a mafia member culted. just use the roles of the mafia members not in the cult and you have an instant win

Let's review the 6 options of Jackpot (which are named dices in case of random event on)
Dice 6: The three people correctly guessed by Gambler will die. This is bad scenario for Town. And we are assuming that Gambler will try to guess Town roles, not Mafia or any other scum. Also, If this scenario happens while there are 4-5 people left alive, then it is very possible for Gambler to win alone by guessing out the remaining roles alive. Therefore, all people will frantically try to hide their roles away or spread misinformation in order to avoid "worst case scenario". This Jackpot should be set up by default, if random dice is off. It will turn Gambler into somewhat mocked-up version of Arsonist.
Dice 5: The three people's roles that are correctly guessed by Gambler will be revealed to everyone else. This is VERY bad scenario for Mafia, especially if Gambler manages to correctly guess a scum role somehow. After reveal, there will be 2-3 proved townspeople, and if a scum role gets revealed that way, it will result in immediate lynching of the unfortunate person. If this scenario is set up by default, then Gambler becomes a beneficial for Town role, and as such will be frantically hunted by Mafia. Therefore, the scum must gain a perfect trust to the town in order to make Gambler believe that they are a proved role and cause him to guess wrong. Because this Jackpot reveals multiple roles by default, is should not be active as standalone option for balance reasons.
Dice 4: The three people correctly guessed by Gambler will turn into Cultists (call then "worshippers of the Gamble god"). This is bad for both Town and Mafia, as having a third faction appearing on the front will radically change the flow of the game. And if Mafia member gets culted that way, he can easily give out the names of his teammates, if he plans to win with a new cult. And the Town will gets screwed too because of increased number of scum roles. So once again, for balance reasons, this Jackpot should be random dice only.
Dice 3: The three people correctly guessed by Gambler will be roleblocked. (and notified). This will be an nasty annoyance, especially for Town roles, if they were the unlucky ones. Multiple roleblocks at once are going to give Mafia and other scum some lead unless they themselves, too, were targeted by Gambler. While annoying, it is not a big disaster compared to other three above, so this Jackpot might also be set up by default.
Dice 2: The three people correctly guessed by Gambler will be randomly switched (and notified). This may cause some confusion, but as soon as people find out who was switched, the game should resume the current flow. The random switch may annoy Mafia, if one of their targets was there. Nothing special, you may also set this Jackpot as standalone event, if you like.
Dice 1: Nothing happens. Take a breath of relief, if this happened during the random dice roll. However keep in mind that Gambler now knows roles of three people, and he might use that information for Town or against the Town, if he chooses to lie - after all he already completed Jackpot and won. Even if nothing happens during this Jackpot, it is still a big deal - Gambler is alive, and can reveal information at any given moment, so you can set up this Jackpot in options, if you are not interested in crazy stuff.

Actually I think dice 6 is far worse as a standard scenario than dice 5. Speaking of SC2 Mafia anyway. I don't have experience with Forum Mafia.
Dice 6 just means every single investigative role on the town side gets paranoid and stops sharing information in a timely fashion. It completely undermines one of the key things that the town needs to rely on, which is investigative roles being open and forthcoming with information and thus proving themselves trustworthy. Option 6 as a standard would make day chat either silent or way too confusing for the average player, and thus it'll cause the town to lose almost every game. And the gambler will probably win even less.
Dice 5 simply allows the gambler to "guess" roles according to their claims during day chat. A sheriff, investigator, lookout or detective will often benefit from being revealed because they suddenly gain a lot of credibility. But it will also make them more of a target for night time kills (when there's doubt, the mafia often lets them live for a while). If a gambler guesses wrong on an invest/consig, nobody will know a thing. If he picks out a consig right, then kudos to him. The effect really isn't any different from a sheriff finding a consig though, so why is this such a big issue? Guessing any non-investigative role is a lot harder. And roles like the doctor and jailor will be just as screwed as scum roles if they're revealed, because it'll make them a target the next night. It balances out pretty well (unlike option 6 where a gambler guessing correctly will just cause massive ruin to the town whereas scum is mostly safe), and it actually gives the gambler a decent shot at winning. An option "must survive until the end" could possibly be applied to make it a bit more challenging.
All in all, 5 seems a far better standard option than 6.

I think the gambler should be allowed to choose between 5 and 6, all the other options are silly.
Also, 5 would be the best for cult. Culted gambler, culted mafia, gambler reveals name of 3 mafia, cult is safe for three weeks.

Everyone respects Yapyap's ability to guess alignments in FM. However, your obsession with him is starting to creep me out.

You should see him in the pony subforum. He's the only one that posts, ever.

It was a joke in FM7, but I honestly think, he's very good at guessing roles, so this role would be dangerous in people who are good at guessing/figuring things out.

It works well enough in EpicMafia, as the Werewolf.
