Ca. 2,000 years ago
The Cetra lived in peace with the Planet. They had the unique ability to commune with it and guide the flow of the Planet’s spiritual energy, the Lifestream, to cultivate life on the Planet’s surface.
Then, all of a sudden, the extra-terrestrial life-form now known as Jenova crashes into the Planet's northern pole on a meteor, forming a huge crater and gravely injuring the Planet.
The Cetra quickly learned of the Planet's wound and gathered in large numbers, trying to heal it. Despite all Planet’s attempts to warn the Cetra about that dangerous area, Jenova suddenly appeared and begun infecting them with its virus, which caused the Cetra to lose their minds and finally turning them into monsters.
Eventually, a small number of surviving Cetra managed to defeat Jenova, and sealed it into the Northern Crater.

48 years ago
Jenova itself is discovered and excavated by Shinra Inc., a wealthy electrical company.
The company had also recently started using Mako-fueled reactors to produce energy, instead of coal and oil.
Mako is nothing else than liquid Lifestream, syphoned directly from within the Planet. It has multiple properties of seemingly magical nature: in fact, when it crystallizes, Materia is created. Through a tiny piece of Materia, even the lowliest of commoners could be able to channel the power of the elements and the spirits, often with catastrophic results. Materia itself has multiple uses as well, and it is named depending on his peculiar properties.

31 years ago
Shinra built the city of Midgar, a huge metropolis fully sustained by the Mako energy, where they would set their Headquarters and base of operations. The city was divided in 9 sectors, from 0 to 8. All sectors were built around a big Mako reactor, which provided energy and electricity to the whole district.
A metallic plate was also built above ground level, dividing the city into two layers. The top layer is where wealthy people - mainly Shinra employees - lived, while the bottom layer housed the jobless and poor people.

Today
Midgar reactors exploited a large part of the Planet’s Mako reserves. Shinra Inc., the company which monopolizes all Mako extraction and refinery, is the world’s richest enterprise and its chairman, President Shinra, is the de-facto leader of the known world.
For a long time rebellious groups have tried to overthrow his tyrannical rule, only to be crushed under his iron fist. Every single attempt failed and resulted in the death of its promoters... until now.

President Shinra’s greediness had grown up to a point that not even his own employees could stand it anymore. Only the most devote members of his directorate - including his only son, Rufus - remained loyal to him.

Former members of the Shinra’s General Affairs Department, also known as the “Turks”, have seized this opportunity to detach themselves from the company and act independently as an organized criminal group.

Shinra’s personal army, the SOLDIERs, was disbanded. Most of their members returned to their families as citizens, while others have gone rogue and became mercenaries for hire.

After the turmoil that shocked the Shinra, Professor Hojo, a brilliant scientist and a man whose morality was dubious at best, decided he had better chances working alone. He betrayed the company while keeping their funds, and moved to his own laboratory. He discovered, after many experiments, that injecting any life form with Jenova cells caused them to acquire special abilities and forced them to follow their master’s orders, so he started to create his own personal army. Those experiments were not immune to failure, though...

...In fact, one of those failed experiments miraculously managed to break Hojo’s control over him, and became a very powerful and fearsome warrior: Sephiroth. After having discovered his true origins, Sephiroth vowed to destroy all people involved in this ill affair, as well as anyone who crossed his path. In his quest for revenge, he came in possession of the Black Materia, a legendary item able to unleash devastating powers, provided it was charged with the souls of people strongly connected to the Planet and bearer of great destinies. Thus, Sephiroth became a crazy murderer, possibly the most feared individual of the entire world.

Meanwhile, as if this mess was not enough, an oriental-looking figure has been reported to walk the street of Midgar. Citizens who encountered this strange individual incidentally noticed that some of their precious materia was gone. Yuffie, the ninja of Wutai, was there.

In this hour of chaos, the inhabitants of Midgar decided to stick together and formed a people army to cleanse the city of all the scum. They gathered in Midgar Square within sector 8, drove away all of the Shinra guards, and started a forum. Feeling threatened, the villains disguised themselves as citizens, spreading lies and false information.

Hello everyone! Nice to meet you! I'm Edna. I hope I won't cause any trouble for you.

My best friend here is Yuffie, but... Because of the recent events, she came into hiding. Although I'm also pretty sure she is here, somewhere around us. Anyway, over those last days I started to like her a lot, and I will keep supporting her, no matter what happens in Midgar. I only want Yuffie to stay alive... it would be sad for me if something bad happens to her.

Anyway, I'm not much help here right now... I'm really afraid of Professor Hojo's latest experiments, especially about Sephiroth. And Shinra's methods are also very rough... But I hope for a bright future in Midgar. How this future will be shaped... will heavily depends on the rest of you guys.
