You talked too late. The messages popped up for 2 full minutes before the game finally gave up and called you AFK. After it says X is having a heart attack, you're locked in and WILL die.

I received the message "type anything if you want to live" during the daytime, that is when I said "d." I definitely said something before the night sequence began.

It doesn't matter. It said "Type anything if you want to live" for two full minutes, and then only after it said "YOU FUCKED NOW BOI" did you finally do anything. The fact that it happened before the night sequence does not matter.
