Thats right! Im deaf. I was born deaf. I know American sign language. I have cochlear implant. Its a small device that make me somewhat hear. I cant hear as good as next guy, but i hear most of them and any word I miss, I have to fill in the blanks.

Its like
Someone said "Hello, how is your day?
I might hear "Hello, how is your ___?
I have to like fill in the blank.
My hearing are terrible when Im in a loud place or many people are talking at the same time like in the cafeteria where 1000 students are talking at the same time.

Being deaf isnt that bad. It have tons of advantage.
One of my brother is terrible at playing music, but he love playing guitar and drums. He plays them so loudly, so I can easily turn it off and not hear a thing.
When youre sleeping, I can turn it off and I wont have sounds waking up like thunderstorm, or annoying birds chirping, or even your mom vaccuuming the house.

What I hate the most is some people say things like this "aww poor you, youre deaf. I am so sorry." It just piss me off

I bet nobody wouldve thought Im deaf
Anyone else is deaf? Or know anybody close who is deaf?

I must say, I didn't notice. However, this is super cool to share and think about. Hadn't even considered someone on the forums being deaf since it just didn't come up yet.

Thanks for sharing this with us PoD! It's cool to hear your perspective on it (no pun intended)

I have actually been considering learning ASL. Do you have any tips on getting started?

Just practice it daily with anybody, you could find a dictionary, you could meet some deaf or anybody who is good at asl and try to talk to them

I think my brain is lagging sometimes, it's like I hear a blur and then 5 seconds later my brain starts working on it and turns it into words.

Hey POD, my parents are deaf so I kinda know how it is. They can't hear anything at all but it's okay because we are all capable of GSL. With all I mean my parents, my sister, my step-parents.. basically close family.

Anyway, cool of you to share that fact!

Youre probably just not paying attention, like youre minding your own buisness, then someone starts talking you and you realize he was talking to you. You probably didnt hear what he said.

It's interesting to learn more about fellow FM players. My grandpa was quite deaf - he lost hearing on one ear when he was ~19 because some guy hit him in concentration camp. Well, I guess loss of hearing is common among older people.

Call me ignorant but I've always thought that there is only one sign language, so people around the world can communicate with it. Now when I look at wikipedia it tells me I was quite wrong.

You have cochlear implants, how does it feel to be a disgrace to the Deaf Community?

You probably know what im talking about unless you are lying about being deaf which would be scumbaggy.

Did you know that most of the deaf community shuns/despises deaf people that opt for cochlear implants before getting them?

How does it feel getting the silent treatment from the deaf community?

Burnt Eskimo

Wow Appley. Check ur privilege. I am also deaf and was posting sincere questions. Cochlear implants are shunned by the deaf community because it removes what makes us unique.

Bunny and Crypt, my deafness does not relate to my name. I can talk but I have this deaf accent.

@Burnt I know what you're talking about, but I am not one of those stereotypes.
I really hate people who think people who have CI or hearing aids are disgrace. I know a lot of deaf people who are like that. They are usually ignorant and rude.

Most people aren't like that. Only a few of them are like that. I can sign perfect asl as well as 100% deaf person can sign. When they see how well I can sign, they usually respect me afterward. Even some of my friends make fun of other deaf people for not knowing signs etc. they even make fun of hearing people just because they can hear. They are basically bullys. There are bullys in hearing community, there are some in deaf community as well. I can tell you're one of them.

I played a live poker game against deaf people once. They watch your face so closely to read your lips, that it makes them quite observant when it comes to reading you too.

POD, do you still have a smoke alarm in your room? Does it shoot blinding bursts of light instead of squealing noise? Do they have smoke alarms in Amerika?

powerofdeath

Every house is required a smoke alarm. I think its law

I have smoke alarm that flashes light and make ringing noise at the same time.

Is it true that if one of your senses is impaired, your other senses are enhanced to compensate?

I imagine being exposed to this repeated times, probably makes you resistant to flash-bang grenades if the feds ever come for you.

Is it true that if one of your senses is impaired, your other senses are enhanced to compensate?

This is mostly true. The organs that give you your senses (ears, nose, eyes, etc) don't actually change. But what you do do by knocking off a sense is reduce the amount of input to your thalamus and your cortex.

Normally when your senses are giving your brain information all the time, your brain deals with the enormous load by automatically filtering out portions of it and not sending it further up the line to your cortex. But if you reduce the load, by knocking out a sense then more of the information from the other senses reaches your consciousness.

You can try this by closing your eyes and noticing all the little details you can suddenly hear.

Im very visual, but I have bad sense of taste (I am somewhat a picky eater)
My smell and touch is normal I guess

Flashing alarms isnt that bright. Its just flicker that attract and annoy your eyes.
Flash bang make you go blind temporarily.

We never had house fire so I am not that used to the flashing alarms

Has being deaf made it difficult for you to learn how to read/write? I have seen some deaf people on the internet say that it was difficult to master written language since they couldn't associate the letters with sounds like hearing people (non-deaf people? whatever the proper term is) do.

How long have you had the cochlear implant? If you've had it your whole life, maybe written language was a bit easier for you to learn than for other deaf people.

Do you know any other sign languages?

Do you think in sign language?

Well apparently i think most just don't really think about it and usually it's only a chance to inherit it and not a 100% thing. So i don't know. I would surely not try to impregnate a deaf woman for that reason alone.

Some deaf people are genetics. There are families where their parents are deaf, and their brothers and sisters are deaf.

But this isnt my case. I am the only deaf person in my whole family.

2 deaf people that have kids, the kids are usually not deaf(like Noctiz)
