Part 4: Montreal, Canada

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9CDbK2plvqw

The Cylons were created to make life easier on the Twelve Colonies. And then the day came when the Cylons decided to kill their masters. After a long and bloody struggle, an armistice was declared and the Cylons left for another world to call their own.

Forty years later, they returned, and brought humanity to the brink of extinction. The remaining humans, led by the crew of the Battlestar Galactica, fled in hopes of finding a new home, one known by legend as Earth.

Humanity’s only hope lies in finding Earth’s location while fighting off the unrelenting Cylons. But as resources run low, it is discovered that the enemy can now appear human and has infiltrated the fleet from the inside.

Part 4: Montreal, Canada - Setup Phase

FM Combo, Admiral of the fleet had safely arrived at the next location in uncharted space.

FM Bishop welcomed FM Cohen, FM Colmyer, and FM Morgan who were found on an abandoned ship floating in space. (+3 to population)

-------------------------------------------------

Setup Phase:
During this Setup Phase, cast your votes to re-elect a President and re-elect an Admiral by typing

-vote playername for President
-vote playername for Admiral

Vote count will be manual, and the player with the most votes wins. In the event of a tie, the role will be given to the player who reached the tie amount of votes first.

The President has been PM'ed an individual puzzle. If he correctly solves this puzzle, then the fleet will be able to gain additional resources.

The Admiral may -throw [player] in the Brig in order to jail a player and prevent them from working on this part's crisis puzzle. The jailed player must complete an individual puzzle to be released at the beginning of the next setup phase.

Repost of new rules:

1. Crisis phases will be ~72 hours with pre-set-hints coming out every ~24 hours. Each pre-set-hint will cost the fleet 1 morale, 1 food, and 1 water.

2. If the answers provided in some of the pre-set-hints have been posted in daychat, then no resources are deducted from the fleet and the player who posted the solution will have the option to choose to regain +1 of any resource.

3. If a cylon PMs me with parts of the puzzle solution that are to be revealed in pre-set-hints before it is posted in daychat, the cylon will gain a charge of his ability to remove 24 hours from the upcoming crisis phase. Cylons can store up to 2 charges at a time, and a maximum of 48 hours may be removed from each crisis phase.

4. If a cylon -reveals as a cylon at the end of a setup phase (and he is not in the brig), he will gain an automatic +2 charge of the ability listed above in addition to entering a private chat with other cylons.

5. Not solving a puzzle will result in a -5 to morale, -4 to food, and -4 to water.

Questions may be asked in green or PM'ed to Switzerland.

The Setup Phase ends at this time: http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=may+22%2C+2013+12+am+PST

Crisis Phase - Montreal, Canada:

The new jump coordinates led the fleet to a new marker with a hidden puzzle inside:

FM Gaius Baltar looked puzzled. The image seems to look like a Settlers of Catan board, but there seems to be something strange about this. Maybe if we figure out the placement of the various resources things will become clear.

Additionally, I wonder what the various numbers mean... I think they are two unrelated puzzles. Again, we are looking for two answers: a city, country AND some kind of additional phrase.

Remember these updates to the rules:

5. Not solving a puzzle will result in a -5 to morale, -4 to food, and -4 to water.

This crisis phase will last ~72 hours with pre-set hints set to trigger approximately every 24 hours.

I am at work right now, so I can't fiddle much with this, but

(3.9269908...., 6.283185...) -> +0.75x Pi
(3.9269908...., 2.35619449...) -> -0.5x Pi
(3.9269908...., 0.78539816...) -> -1x Pi
(3.9269908...., 1.570796...) -> -0.75x Pi
(3.9269908...., 6.283185...) -> +0.75x Pi
(2.35619449..., 0.78539816...) -> -0.5x Pi
(2.35619449..., 5.497787...) -> +1x Pi
(2.35619449..., 1.570796...) -> -0.25x Pi
(3.14159..., 6.283185...) -> +1x Pi
(1.570796..., 4.71238898...) -> +1x Pi
(3.9269908...., 1.570796...) -0.75x Pi
(4.71238898..., 0.78539816...) -> -1.25x Pi
(2.35619449..., 1.570796...) -> -0.25x Pi
(2.35619449..., 4.71238898...) -> +0.75x Pi
(3.14159..., 3.9269908....) -> +0.25x Pi
(2.35619449..., 0.78539816...) ->-0.5x Pi
(3.14159..., 1.570796...) -> -0.5x Pi

Obviously related to Pi. That's the equations for the the First to Second number. Can someone doublecheck that I didn't make any mistakes? I made this in a hurry.

Also, has anyone figured our what the colored walls on the diagrams are for?

FM Colmyer

Actually, have the full thing.

First Number Equation Second Number

1.25x Pi +0.75x Pi = 2x Pi
1.25x Pi -0.5x Pi = 0.75x Pi
1.25x Pi -1x Pi = 0.25x Pi
1.25x Pi -0.75x Pi = 0.5x Pi
1.25x Pi +0.75x Pi = 2x Pi
0.75x Pi -0.5x Pi = 0.25x Pi
0.75x Pi +1x Pi = 1.75x Pi
0.75x Pi -0.25x Pi = 0.5x Pi
1x Pi +1x Pi = 2x Pi
0.5x Pi +1x Pi = 1.5x Pi
1.25x Pi -0.75x Pi = 0.5x Pi
1.5x Pi -1.25x Pi = 0.25x Pi
0.75x Pi -0.25x Pi = 0.5x Pi
0.75x Pi +0.75x Pi = 1.5x Pi
1x Pi +0.25x Pi = 1.25x Pi
0.75x Pi -0.5x Pi = 0.25x Pi
1x Pi -0.5x Pi = 0.5x Pi

Those lines aren't roads. I've played way more Catan than I should be admitting, two players cannot have roads occupying the same edge and blue and yellow clearly do.

And apparently they aren't clues either... the hell? three of those yellow roads on the bottom left should not be possible.

I'm gonna see how much headway i can make solving it by elimination ignoring those colored lines.

I was about to post my solution for the color fillings. I wonder what the method is to fill the correctly.
I tried to make it unique. Therefor I introduced some additional rules:
1. Number of resources have to match every row and column
2. No tile of a color may be adjacent to a road of the same color.
3. The solution must be unique. As such tiles must be placed in a way that simple swaps don't allow for an equivalent solution.

The President's puzzle:
You are at a diplomatic meeting with the cylons on a cylon base star. Unexpectedly, the cylon ship begins to malfunction. The error printout reads:

0x9EB5AA6F
0xA4DA5D85
0x08B2CA88

There is a number keypad on which you must enter the correct combination in order to reboot the cylon ship's operating system. If you do not successfully repair the cylon ship, this may start an intergalactic incident.

The cylons hand you a piece of scratch paper to work out your solution: http://i40.tinypic.com/2uxtwt4.png

FM Bishop

Notes on the second puzzle:
- The numbers are paired in tuples. Those are usually used for coordinates.
- The number of digits differs from number to number, but remains consistent for each individual number.
- The multiples of Pi may hint at some trigonometric functions or cylinder coordinates (all values are between Pi/4 and 2Pi).

I thought of interpreting them as vectors and chaining them one after another in hopes that the result would be somewhat similar to letters. Not helpful.

I'd like to point out that at the very least the bottom right corner is most obviously not a unique solution, as are at least two other pairings meaning it was impossible to solve the puzzle based on the rows and columns given (in other words, making it a bad sudoku puzzle) as I was directly told the roads meant nothing to the placement of tiles, and no other determinable hints were given, I'd like an explanation from Switzerland about the tile placement reasoning once said reasoning becomes irrelevant to the rest of the puzzle.

Also I'd like to use my resource on whichever stat is the lowest.

Further, it was hinted that the roads were relevant to the puzzle after tile placement was determined. I'll be home shortly and can analyze it more then.

The color tile placement was intended to be solved with a mix of logic like a nonogram, and a mix of referencing the game Settlers of Catan and realizing that the roads are incorrectly placed for a Settlers game.

I believe I may have been unclear/misspoke with regards to the walls. They were not relevant to the puzzle by means of imposing restrictions like: yellow walls are surrounded by yellow tiles, or something of that nature, but details about the roads and colors of the tiles that are impossible for a game of settlers of Catan provide hints about the solution. Unfortunately I cannot say much more than this: it's one of those things that you either see or you don't. I will say that as always, it is a type of code, however.

I will add resources for Combo's solutions when I get to a desktop computer and have a chance to review how many he is missing.

So far the first part of the puzzle has always been relevant for the location of the next (city, country) while the second part was for the receipt. I believe the same is true now, too. The board should point to our next location.
The second puzzle consists of 17 tuples. They may very well reference a letter each.

FM Gaius Baltar did a bit more tinkering with his solution.

It appears that these tiles when converted to square form bear a resemblance to some kind of flags. Anyone know what these mean?

Keeping in theme with the flags, I diagrammed out the numbers as if they were angular positions of someone holding flags. The left number represents the left flag and the right number represents the right flag.

Now that we got the solution, I'd like to know how we could have managed to fill the board correctly. But I don't know how I should have gotten from there to the actual arrangement.

But I don't know how I should have gotten from there to the actual arrangement.

I was hoping that people would realize the resemblance to the flags due to the possible colors and the tiles you could place for sure. Using the knowledge that the tiles should look like flags, that solves a lot of the swappable positions and eliminates some possible combinations. I guess I guess without realizing that the colors were the way they were due to flags, it would have been near impossible to solve. People were supposed to notice the theme and guess that the numbers could be plotted as semaphores as well.

For solving the puzzle, you may gain a +1 to any of the fleet's resources.

As resource I'll take the usual.
The only thing that looked like a flag to me was the M and the R flag, and mainly because the M flag is basically the Scottish flag. I'm positive I wouldn't have guessed it had to do with flags before the correct placement was shown. And even after that I only recognized those aforementioned ones as flags and thus discarded the idea. On the other hand I wasn't familiar with nautical flags before that. I might have gotten the semaphore code after some time though.
