What are people's thoughts on this game?

I just started playing it, it seems like they ripped a lot of stuff directly from SC2Mafia - I don't know if they actually did this, but it is very reminiscent of the game.



Thinking about donating to their latest Kickstarter for ingame perks similar to what I did for SC2, is anyone a regular player who advise for or against doing this?

Town Of Salem is pretty much a copy of the mod. I believe they contacted DR way back in the day to get permission.

I'm personally not a fan; hate the art style and some of their original roles.

Yeah, I prefer much of the gameplay aspects of SC2mafia, it's just the fact that ToS actually has players that sways it for me. I'm kind of hoping they adjust their gameplay elements to better mirror the mod - I think it would make a big difference to quality of play.

Cons: looks like shit, no one talks, people use multiple accounts to fuck up games etc

The only few times I've played Town of Salem is when my friends who are too lazy to download SC2 wants to play mafia or similiar.

Is SC2mafia still alive then? Last time I tried it, I sat in the lobby for 3 hours without getting a full game, so I figured things could only have gotten worse.

That's correct -- we are no longer able to update the EU map due to new Blizzard security restrictions and therefore, encourage everyone to play the map on NA instead. And, as Shifty said above, we can facilitate a point transfer so you don't lose your points / achievements from EU.

It's possible you misread what I said - I simply meant that I'd like BananaCucho to state why he considered the game to be garbage, as opposed to insulting it with no reasoning; giving the example of calling him garbage but not saying why. I'm sure he's a perfectly nice person when he's not posting on my thread

General consensus is that it has bad game design that appeals to casuals, i.e. doctors healing self, turning dead chat into part of the game, resurrection, etc.

Ah, I see. I can live without citizens myself, would be nice to have some more customization options but hey, at least they made a functioning game for free it's not the same as SC2mafia but it's certainly much more accessible. Hopefully they can improve on ToS's flaws and take it forward. I noticed they have a DR skin in their ingame shop - is he involved on the game, or is that just a nod to its origins?

aren't they making bank off of ToS? isn't the point of kickstarter to be able to fund projects that you can't fund yourself, rather than offloading the risk of starting a business venture?

It'll go towards the site, which is nice I suppose. Donating to SC2Mafia wasn't a scam imo, this isn't really any different. I'm just pleased to see Mafia becoming slightly more mainstream and accessible.

Yeah but SC2Mafia isn't a product, rev's revenue stream is solely from donations. These guys definitely have the money to start up a business venture, and if it succeeds then they'll make a bunch of money off of it. The reason it's scummy is that the point of kickstarter is for people who otherwise don't have the money to bring something to market to be able to get that capital through crowdfunding. In this case, though, this doesn't apply because I highly doubt it takes fucking $400k to make a deck of cards even if they hire original artists and shit, so it's very likely that they can put the money in right now to bring the product to market. They just want to do so risk-free, so that even if the product flops, they still get paid a very respectable salary despite wasting a bunch of time, and ultimately net a profit no matter what they do.

EDIT: wow this kickstarter is even more of a joke than I originally thought. Some of their stretch goals include an extra role and unique box art for a special version. I guess it costs $400k to hire artists to draw box art and a shitty picture of a crystal ball.

Straight up I dislike our communities attitude towards ToS. I think they did an excellent job creating a browser based format for Mafia. They simplified the game to a very heavy extent which does not appeal to me at all but I understand that they were going for mass appeal. It honestly tickled the hell out of me that they implemented roles that interact with the dead, eliminated the citizen and created self-healing doctors. Those are all things our community forever cried could never work and it works just fine. All in all I think their developers did an excellent job taking a game format they loved moving it into a browser based format while making a living doing it.

What I do not like is that they ran a 2nd kickstarter campaign before they had fulfilled the promises they made on the first one. That straight up disgusted me and some of the things they put in were just insane. Like another 30K donation stretch goal was something like adding 1 role. It was a shameless money grab that made me loose a good portion of the respect I had for their developers. Hopefully their next one has goals that have some kind of effort in them.

All that aside I really do like the game. Its much too simple for my taste but I think it nails exactly what it was going for. A very light and simple version of the mafia game for a much more casual audience. I have some special privileges in that game but you will probably never see me playing it. I would best summarize it as a blend between Epic Mafia and our SC2 mod.
