I'm not understanding how to find out how many I have or what I get for having them. Could someone give me a rundown of how they work and what to do? I feel like an idiot for asking this, but I've seriously never even seen anything related to points other than the gender option.

Point-based ranks and rewards will be fleshed out in the future. For now, they're a measure of skill. Later on, there will be top 10 list and a few more vanity-based rewards. You can find out how many you have by looking at the Local Ranking in the Help menu.
