According to the wikipedia article on the history of eugenics, eugenics was widespread in the 1920-1940s:

I did not know this. Wow.

there are still forced sterilizations occurring even nowadays, though much less frequently
Have you ever heard the tragedy of Darth Jar Jar the wise?
This has something to do about race and shit. That's all I remember lol.
Actually, if I remember correctly, "white trash" were victims of this. Guess where I found this info? A book called "White Trash." OWO
Eugenics, scientific racism, and just general poor-bashing have a rich academic history. It's something worth reading into, and provides a lot of context for where fascism and other batshit ideologies came from. School leads you to believe it's just "something something ignorant poor people were angry about the depression something something" when there was actually a lot of precedent.
Wow... I had heard that the Nazis had used colonial British "racial ranking" as part of their basis for their own ranking, but that's a lot worse.
And yzb, I think you're both right and wrong. There sure were people who had a big background of such things, but that was out of the knowledge range of many, many people who just were indeed "angry because of the Depression", so to speak. Those two aspects are not mutually exclusive, but complementary.
Plus, crazy sciencists aren't the basis of fascism; Mussolini's regime is a good proof of this. It's about the State, not the race. Nazism and fascism are closely related, but they are not the same.
The US forcibly sterilised 60,000 people over the course of around 30-40 years. it was by no means a fringe movement.
it did indeed started becoming less and less popular after the 30s-40s, but it was WW2/the nazis that really delivered the killing blow. in the 50s for instance, a eugenics scientific magazine/journal became Social Biology.
it was actually legal in Canada/the US for physicians to sterilise the "feeble-minded". mind you, this wasn't necessarily about race, not in every country, anyways. in Brazil, it was indeed about race, where the white (minority?) implemented a program they literally called "White-ization". in Australia, they had this program where halfbreed Aboriginal children were forcibly taken from their parents.
crazy scientists weren't the sole basis of fascism, but they allowed it to flourish. just like crazy economic theorists (Marx) allowed Communism to flourish.
plus, the most important thing is, it proves that these ideologies didn't exactly appear out of nowhere.
