The “anti water bottle rap”, recited in 2018 on an online forum by user Efekannn02, is a powerful song with an underlying message, created in order to inspire the SC2Mafia community towards abolishing plastic water bottles. In his first line, he states that greenery, such as flowers, are “combating plastic sabers” (Efekannn02, 1). He employs two strategies here: personification and a metaphor. By saying that the flowers combat the bottles, he is suggesting that for the plants this is a matter of life and death. Furthermore, by mentioning both combat and sabers, he likens the anti-water bottle movement to a bloody battle. In this sentence he also includes a metaphor, in which he compares bottles to sabers. This has the effect of portraying the water bottles as deadly instruments of destruction, much like sabers (a type of sword) can be when placed in the wrong hands. In the next line, he mentions that they (the flowers) “[eat] bottles for humanitanties” (efekannn02, 2). This is a paradox: he suggests that the bottles, which hold liquids meant to be drunk, are being eaten, which is a seemingly contradictory statement but upon further analysis reveals that there are subtle nuances to the word “eat” that may mean something different than what you originally would have believed. Most notable is the way that in this sentence, the artist intentionally misspells humanities, in order to convey that humanity is not perfect. In the next sentence, he mentions that the “talkitation [flows] through blades” (efekannn02, 3). He uses the word “flow” for ironic effect: flow can reference both the way that a conversation (talkitation) can flow, but also links it back to the motif of water bottles. He also includes a clever wordplay when he says “blade”: not only could this be referring to the blades of grass negatively implicated by the usage of water bottles, but he also refers back to the metaphor he made earlier comparing the objects to a saber. He concludes the first stanza with the line “fighting the distant fate of water” (efekannn02, 4), which serves a similar purpose: mentioning fate connects back to the motif of flowing (both time and fate flow only in one direction, as does water), and also alludes back to the conflict presented in line one (fighting and combating).

The second stanza is a bit trickier to analyze. He expands on the idea of conflict by mentioning nuclear warfare, when he claims that “water [rises] up the nukes” (efekannn02, 5). He suggests that as a result of continued ignorance as to the plight being faced as a result of water bottles, the conflict has now devolved straight into nuclear warfare. The original text actually includes the phrase “Rising up” (redacted in the earlier quote for fluency purposes), which may also indicate rebellion from a group of oppressed persons. In the next sentence, he mentions “soup sandwiches [and] bottling plastic” (efekannn02, 6). These are staples of surviving a nuclear fallout, and is a cruelly ironic fate: people are forced to resort to plastic bottles again because there is no other source of clean water in such a post apocalyptic environment. His next line mentions that the survivors of the bombing are “starving for the radios” (efekannn02, 7) a clever tieback to how people are starving in this dystopian environment, yes, but specifically for information in the form of radios. This can be linked to the “flowing talkitation” (communication) mentioned previously, and it used to thrive when blades (grass) still existed, but now that they have died due to the plastic water bottles, people are no longer to receive their news and thus are starving for communication. Finally, the creator ends his rap with “whoopsielies ending the worldlic” (efekannn02, 8). By doing this, he brings an element of playfulness to the rap, a sharp contrast to the tales of nuclear fallout he was discussing earlier. This is done to portray just how fickle human nature is, and that the slightest misstep when dealing with plastic water bottles can easily lead to disastrous consequences, such as full blown chemical warfare. As such, notwithstanding the relatively short length of the piece, efekannn has successfully utilized a plethora of rhetoric strategies, literary devices and loaded terms to further his argument that people should join him in his cause of abolishing the tyranny that is the plastic water bottle, once and for all.
