    Tragedy Looper #1 Tutorial Game (First Steps)

    This game will be running Script #1 in the Mastermind Rulebook, using the "First Steps" Tragedy Set. I will be the game's Mastermind. Please let me know if you have any questions.

    If you can no longer participate or take your turn in a reasonable amount of time, please let us know so that one of the other Protagonists can take your turn for you.

    Thematic text will appear in a blue font like this. This information is mostly intended to weave an immersive story around the actions we are taking throughout the game. I will remain purposefully vague until some fact has been undeniably confirmed, such as a character's role or a plot in play. This information is not intended to give hints or mislead you.

    Use the following information to help you figure out what's going on. Below you will find:
    • What the Characters do
    • All the Main Plots possible (reminder: only one of the three is being used)
    • All the Sub Plots possible (reminder: only one of the three is being used)
    • All the Roles that will be assigned to characters if a Main or Sub Plot is active (reminder: a person can have no role, and no more than one!)
    • The abilities of the Roles, and if Goodwill usage can be denied by the Mastermind (note when the abilities can activate as well if the Mastermind can deny the usage of a Goodwill ability!)
    • What the Incidents mean (Each has a different Culprit, which is NOT a Role!)

    Tips and Reminders
    1. Be sure to fully discuss your options and come to a consensus with your fellow players before posting your moves.
    2. The leader should take the time to map out the known information at the start of each day. The other players should examine this information for any mistakes in logic.
    3. This first script has one plot and one subplot. Each character can have only one role but a character with a role may also be culprit in an incident.
    4. When you have decided what to play during Phase 3, please post your choice in bold and red color in the thread (like this: "[Action] on the [character/location].") Remember: Once you bold what you're doing, it cannot be undone! You can be thematic in your post, so long as it is clear what acyion you are performing and where/on whom.
    5. Only one protagonist action can be played on any one location/character. A Protagonist action can be performed on the same character/location as a Mastermind action.

    Phase 4: Resolve Actions

    The Girl Student, whose grandmother was extremely sick, overheard some of her classmates talking about the miraculous healing abilities the local shrine had demonstrated over the years. The moment class let out, she traveled up the hill to the old shrine to say a prayer for her grandmother and seek any help the priests might offer her.

    Meanwhile, the Police Officer had spend the day working on his latest investigation, the details of which had put him on edge. This feeling was further exacerbated by the strange conversation they had with one of the Protagonists who insisted he take a closer look at the goings-on in the city. It seemed that there was some elaborate machination at work in the city, but so far there were too many strings for him to tie together.

    The Office Worker and the Boy Student, each had a much more pleasant encounter that day with the other Protagonists. Perhaps friendship would soon blossom?

    Phase 4: Resolve Actions

The moment class let out, she intended to travel into the heart of the city in search of a pharmacy that might supply this new wonder drug. However, one of the Protagonists convinced her that her time was better spend tending to her grandmother at home and so she did not go to the City.

    Meanwhile, the Police Officer had spend the day working on his latest investigation, the details of which had put him on edge. It seemed that there was some elaborate machination at work in the City, but so far there were too many strings for him to tie together.

    The Girl Student's considers visiting the City today once more as her grandmother's condition worsened, but was encouraged by one of the Protagonists to accompany her to the Hospital instead.

    The Boy Student, upon hearing about his friend's grandmother, decides to visit the Shrine to say a prayer for her.

    The Shrine Maiden left the Hospital with the intention of visiting the School, but was convinced to return to the Shrine by one of the Protagonists, lest her secret be discovered.

    The Office Worker seemed friendly and enthusiastic when speaking to the Protagonists. You seem to have his complete trust.

    The Protagonists encourage the Police Officer to visit the Hospital to investigate the death of the Doctor. But he is not alone... Others have ventured to the Hospital, including the Office Worker and the Shrine Maiden. What purpose could they have there? The Protagonists have forbidden the Girl Student from leaving the Hospital, where they think she will be safe... But in doing so have they only sealed her fate?

    The Girl Student has been growing increasingly depressed a her sick grandmother's condition worsens.

    Meanwhile, the Police Officer had spend the day working on his latest case, a violent string of deaths, which brought him into the local high school.

    A well known Doctor left the hospital early that day to travel downtown. No one at the hospital seemed to know why. At the same time, the local Shrine Maiden visited the hospital, just as an Office Worker checked himself in, complaining of stomach cramps.

    The Girl Student's heart breaks as her grandmother is checked into the Hospital. It has become clear her time grows short as the Doctor is called back to the Hospital to tend to her. The Protagonists do their best to keep her from breaking down, but is in a tenuous situation at best.

    The Boy Student is encouraged to visit the Shrine to say a prayer for his friend's grandmother just as the Shrine Maiden returns.

    Story Summary: A girl stands to inherit everything once her grandmother passes away, unbeknownst to her. A scheming doctor convinces a jealous relative to hire an assassin to eliminate her. There’s also a serial killer in town and a confused police officer, which makes things worse. Is there anyone who can protect this innocent young girl?

    Gameplay Summary

    Loop 1: The first loop was simple. A mastermind will always try and end a loop as quickly as possible in order to deny the Protagonists valuable information. However, revealing the Serial Killer is a double edged sword as it allows the Protagonists to manipulate him to their own ends, as you realized by Loop 2. I played Intrigue on the City as a decoy while also playing paranoia on the Police Officer, to set him up as a potential suspect for the Murder incident later on. The Mastermind will often attempt to bluff in this way. Learn to separate the truth from the lies.

    Loop 2: This loop I intentionally played the same actions as the previous loop. This served a dual purpose, to see how you would react (and to see if you would learn from your mistake) while also reinforcing my earlier plays in an effort to make my bluffs seem more believable. The murder of the Brain might have made my attempts to have the Office Worker kill the girl via Intrigue more difficult, but your actions inadvertently played into my hand.

    Loop 3: This loop started out bad for me with the death of the Office Worker. This left me with no way to kill the Girl Student, save for the Suicide incident as the Officer Worker was the Killer and the culprit of the Murder incident both. Fortunately, I was already intending to pursue this avenue and brought the Police Officer into the school to facilitate the increase in Paranoia. Without knowing who the Conspiracy Theorist was, the end game did come down to a game of chance, but I am impressed by how much thought you all put into your moves. For your first game, you all did very well!
