    Scum hunting basics

I wouldn't call this a guide. Its more like a white trash post of some scum hunting shit just vomited on a page by request.

    Clear Town / Town Block
This is a technique by which players focus on identifying town players as opposed to identifying scum players. If they can identify enough town they limit the pool scum could be hiding in and become more capable of lynching scum as time progresses. The downside of this is that if there is a "Power Wolf" or a scum vocal scum player who has been placed in the town block he can be much more effective at driving the town into the dirt with both himself being insulated from a lynch as well as gaining the ability to steer lynches away from his team

    Consistency Reads-
This is the practice of players focusing on a player's mindset to ensure that they are posting from a consistent perspective. The idea is that because Town are honest and posting as themselves it will stay consistent. Because Scum are attempting to hide their true perspective they can easily slip and adopt multiple perspectives in their posting style over time allowing them to be identified. Some people focus on 'tone' instead of perspective with this method.

    Theory Crafting-
This is the concept of drawing 'pictures' or 'ideas' of how the game could be laid out and then comparing it to what you currently see. The idea is saying something like "If players X, X, and X are the scum team" then comparing this to see if it fits. Thousands of different ways to apply this.

    Action Analysis-
This is basically breaking down night actions to attempt to solve parts of the game. It can be combined with theory crafting to project inductive analization about the game state.

    Double Reading-
This is the idea of analyzing 2 aspects of the game and matching them up. Similar to theory crafting. An example would be building a profile of everything you know about the 'escort/consort' in the game by analyzing his choice of targets and comparing it to potential scum / town motivations in order to make an educated guess on the role blockers alignment. Or maybe building a profile of everything you know about the role blocker and also building a profile on player X to see if they match up.

    Mechanical Reading-
This is breaking down objective mechanical knowledge to form assumptions about the game. For example breaking down progressive vote counts in order to identify a players alignment. If every player has at one time expressed a vote to lynch the player than assumptions can be made based upon these patterns.

    Perspective hunting-
This is examining a players posts to identify the perspectives they are posting from and comparing it to what you would expect from them as town or scum. It also encumpasses things like identifying hidden knoledge based upon gaps in their presented reasoning compared to their perspective.

    Intention hunting-
This is examining a players intentions to identify what motivations they could have behind their actions. Its most commonly used on this site when someone provides their night actions and people ask "Why did you preform these actions" and such.

    Association hunting-
This is probably an extremely commonly used technique that I have very rarely seen successful on this site. People spend more time hunting for associations and almost always come up with a bad lynch. The name of it is kinda self explanatory and it can be a very powerful tool. Im just saying that this community totally sucks at it and would be better off not using it.

    Scaling usefulness of hunting techniques-
This is actually something I just sketched up earlier this morning. Eventually I want to draw a lot more out of this concept but this is what I initially wrote down.

Perspective tells D1 are at their highest because it is the day when there is the largest information gap between scum and town. As days progress they will slightly decrease at first but remain a constant throughout the game.

Intention tells D1 are at their lowest because the scum team has not coordinated and generally has no objectives. As the days progress you will be better able to identify intentions because the value of each player slot (via skill or outed PR) becomes more widely known.

Association tells become easier to pick up on as more days pass because there is more interactions to look at as well as a stronger potential for coordinated effort in chat

Like I said, White trash posting; not a guide. But it presents some of the more common scum hunting shit out there off the top of my head.
Intellectual growth comes from discussions, not arguments. If you are unwilling to change your position and hear the other persons side you are closed minded and wasting your time.
If you can not clearly explain what the other sides reasoning is you can not disagree with their position because you do not understand it.

Good stuff. I have a long way to go if I want to be able to do all of these proficiently.
    Mafia Record:
    Spoiler : On Site/Universal Total :
    ..Total: 5/9 = 55.6% | 61/104 = 58.3%..
    ...Town: 3/5 = 60% | 42/76 = 55.3%...
    ....Mafia: 0/2 = 0% | 14/23 = 60.9%....
    .....3P: 1/1 = 100% | 3P: 3/5 = 60%.....
    My advice on Mafia play:
    Get the Led Out

PM me to ask about more detail on any of these. I would be a shit teacher for mechanical reading but any of the others I could teach easily enough

Please do not call this a guide. It was just briefly explaining the majority of the more common techniques. I will make something real at some point but this really was a garbage post.

Thanks for your white trash post that is very informative. I'm going to need to try out a couple of these that I don't use often to put into my scum hunting toolbox.

    Re: Scum hunting basics

This bit is actually from my notes.. Probably a little bit better than the original post.

    Triangulating Reads
This is a critical tool for any town. By identifying other players you read as ‘town’ and then checking their perspective on your reasoning you can mitigate your bias and better gauge your reads. Confirmation bias is usually one of towns biggest downfalls beguiling reads and keeping players from staying objective when scum hunting. Simply because of the ratio of scum to town in the game it is much easier to correctly town read a slot than it is to correctly scum read one. Its usually a safe assumption to look at your top town read with confidence so identify players you believe are town who’s ability to analyze you respect and bounce ideas off of them. Take time to consider their perspective when it differs from yours and stay humble enough to identify and accept when bias is clouding your judgement.

    Indy Play
This type of play is designed to beguile player’s ability to read your motives behind your actions. If done correctly it will completely destroy a players ability to analyze you with intention tells. In order to really do it effectively you have to really commit to not planning things out or having strong reasoning behind your actions and instead just stay adaptable to the game. So instead of focusing on your win condition and methodically planning out your actions you just haphazardly swing from one thing to the next. One moment you may be hardcore pushing on a player and the next just totally abandoning that line of action in favor of some other focus. The downside of this method is that anyone reading consistency will question the hell out of you. The thing to watch out for is those players that would lynch someone simply because they do not understand their perspective (Which is usually lower skilled players)
Intellectual growth comes from discussions, not arguments. If you are unwilling to change your position and hear the other persons side you are closed minded and wasting your time.
If you can not clearly explain what the other sides reasoning is you can not disagree with their position because you do not understand it.

    More notes

    Iso Reads
As the name suggests this refers to isolating a players post. The basic concept is that you can identify patterns in a players posts that are not apparent from just keeping up with the thread. This is probably one of the most widely accepted tools between many communities and is one of those tools every player should use. There is 2 generally accepted ways of doing it:
The standard iso- You just read the players posts one after another. The advantage of running this over a context iso is that it is easier to pick up patterns like if the player is running mostly filler/fluff posts.
The context iso- You skim through the game thread keeping up with exactly what is going on while focusing on this specific players posts. The advantage of running this over a standard iso is that you will be able to understand the context of each post as it is made. This can make it a bit harder to identify raw patterns but helps draw things like association reads. It also provides you with a stronger picture of how the player is interacting with the game in general.

Some tips to use Iso reads:
-Some players find it very useful to write something about each post as they go. Sometimes to generalize what was being said or maybe just make a comment to identify some key factor about the post such as breaking down your own thoughts about their post as simplistically as you can.
-It is an extremely effective way to push / triangulate a read. If you are scum reading the hell out of a player and nobody is listening by breaking down their posts and explaining how each post can be scummy players will be able to understand your reasoning and see what you see. If your strong town reads do not agree with you it may be a sign that you should step back and consider your level of bias.
-Don’t burn yourself out. Trying to run a full ISO on every player with 20 in the game will probably end up with you spending a bunch of time and effort but generating garbage content. Quality > Quantity is a very good policy with scum hunting.
-Some players use +1 – 1 (See below)

    +1 - 1 Reads
In general this is usually used with an Iso of the players posts in an attempt to quantify the read. A point system is used with something like +1 point for a Scummy post and -1 for a Townie post or sometimes a scale is used giving the posts 1-5 or 1-10 points per post. It is a somewhat useful tool for town to gain perspective on a slot by forcing them to identify each post as either null, scummy or townie. This is an extremely useful tool for players that roll scum and still have trouble gauging the level of certainty they should present with their fake reads. It offsets town’s ability to nail you as scum based on the apparent gap in presented reasoning and presented certainty. It can also be used by town in those situation when you are not sure what to think of a player and a standard iso draws a null read in spite of having large amounts of posts to analyze.
An alternative +1 – 1 I have seen successfully used would be categorizing every post in a basic way such as ‘Fluff post’, ‘Good contribution’ or ‘Scummy post’ ect.. Its basically making a few general categories and putting every post in one of them, then counting up how many of each there is to identify trends in behavior.
I would not use this as a tool to determine a lynch, only as something to get your feet moving on a read; although I have a player or two use it very effectively as a meta tool.
Intellectual growth comes from discussions, not arguments. If you are unwilling to change your position and hear the other persons side you are closed minded and wasting your time.
If you can not clearly explain what the other sides reasoning is you can not disagree with their position because you do not understand it.
