Just watched a game online but I can't seem to understand early game goals. What are the early game goals for both players?

Trades seem to happen beginning on turn 3. Is that normal?

Are the lances ever even used?

If a piece is dropped in the promotion zone and moves out of it in the next turn, is the piece promoted?

It's really play-style dependent, generally I'd say turn 3 seems a little early. in the game you link if I counted turns right, I don't think a trade happened on turn 3, closer to turn 7 i think?

Are the lances ever even used.
Yes. They are especially good since you can drop them anywhere on the board once you capture one. The main reason why I don't think they're used in the game that you linked is that like in chess, you generally don't want to develop on the side of the board but rather the middle, so they are a late/mid-game piece like the rook in chess. There is also a strategies of attacking the edge's of the board called an "edge attack" on wikipedia. It's generally done when an opponent is very defensive on one side of the board (such as when castling or overextending) in order to allow an attack from the side[Generally Weaker defense on side of castles than front]

If a piece is dropped in the promotion zone and moves out of it in the next turn, is the piece promoted?
    Pedit: Was Wrong About This.
You do have the option to promote it.

    Here's the promotion rules
    PROMOTION

The three rows furthest away from a player are called the promotion zone.
Apart from the King and the Gold, any piece can be promoted to a more powerful piece when it makes a move completely or partly in the promotion zone.
So, when a piece moves into, out of or fully inside the promotion zone it may be promoted upon completion of its move.
Promotion is optional, provided that the piece still can make a legal move in case it is not promoted: if a Pawn or a Lance move to the last row, or a Knight moves to either of the last two rows, it must be promoted.
In Shogi sets promoting a piece is done by turning this pieceupside down.
Its promoted name is written on its other side

Hmm.. I've never played, but might give it a go. Only unless secondpassing doesn't want to play.. I assume they do since they are asking about it.

(I played against the computer and got up to novice then stopped for no reason than to do other things. Fascinating game; I could get into this.)

Umm, If you want to do that then just darken the piece

    Liek this for blue
    liek this for red

I can generally figure it out but can do either way since its not really anymore work to colour the last moved piece

The rules make much more sense when thinking of it in the context of mimicking actual battles

I'd recommend using whatever the most advance editor you can choose on settings is. Since it allows you to just cut and paste your piece while keeping co lour. That and making the table actually look readable in editor.

Early Game is mainly setup for attack while also setting up a defense good enough to allow you to extend.
It just takes a bit to get a feel for what to do, same with every game.

If you want we can just use the quote then delete the quote tag and make a move.
That's probably easier than copy and pasting the entire board every time.

I have a question. When I played on that online site I never figured out how to add an enemy piece to the board that I had captured? How does that work? It was unclear to me looking at the rules that you linked to us.

On the site you click on the piece in the token reservoir then the board should show what locations you can place it down in on blue. Then just click the place on the board.

For a game the rules are

Can't drop the a pawn on the same column as another unpromoted pawn(under your control)
Can't drop a pawn that would checkmate[can do it to check]
Can't make illegal drops that would not be able to move after dropping[pawns/knights are only pieces where this is possible]

    I hope not lol.

I don't see any sensible way to set up a time limit without playing on an actual dedicated site.
I could only find sites for pvp with kanji pieces though.

How does it work with putting a piece on the board that you have captured? Can you put it anywhere? Can you promote the piece as soon as you place it?

    Drop rules:

Can't drop the a pawn on the same column as another unpromoted pawn(under your control)
Can't drop a pawn that would checkmate[can do it to check
Can't make illegal drops that would not be able to move after dropping[pawns/knights are only pieces where this is possible

You can't promote the piece till after you have moved it.
If a piece is dropped (or moved into )then out of the promotion zone it can be promoted at the end of the move.
Dropping a piece uses up your entire turn[ you can't move any pieces]
