I found it odd that Auckmid decided to use his gun to kill a possible Vigilante rather than sabotage to kill a significant town leader and the Avatar. Either he had some plan, or he was just flat out dumb.

You're misreading the order of operations. Crown Princess charges come first (6. Miscellaneous) and then kills come later (8. Kills).
