    Idea for Mafia variant

Okay, so I have been trying for a while to get a Deathnote based mafia game going. This variant involves some role-play to it, but not to the point where you need a whole forum to play it, as most mechanics are handled by PM's. Here's what I got so far:

    INTRODUCTION:

[hide=intro]It was a dark and stormy night; the wind, rain and lightning drenched the metropolis known simply as The Middle-Ground, forcing all those who wished to stay dry to take shelter. Most were asleep in their houses by now, but there were still a few people wandering about the streets… most of them probably street thugs, drug dealers, gang members, or other criminals.

Suddenly, unbeknownst to mortals, a twirling vortex opens up in the midst of the storm, and a tall skeletal figure hooded in black emerges from its maw. Upon one of his skeletal fingers, a black ring with a silver skull and blood-red rubies set in the eye sockets. It was a symbol of the figure’s position, and a testament to his power. It was a god of death, a Shinigami, a REAPER OF SOULS!

And it was looking for a… good time.

Durzan, as this Shinigami was called, was thrilled. Apparently, the mortal world was filled with things which no god of death could take pleasure in while still on the Home Plane. In fact, most of them couldn’t even begin to imagine many of the things the puny mortals were capable of. There was so much to do, so much to see…HE WAS GOING TO HAVE SO MUCH FUN!

I have heard of what these humans are like, He thought to himself, But I do not know if that is entirely true or not. It would be entertaining to test their character... to satisfy my curiosity…

Absentmindedly, he reached into his robe and pulled out a small black notebook, which had been given to him so he could log the names of those whom had died, as proof that he had either escorted them to the afterlife as was his job, or consumed their soul. He tapped it lightly on the palm of his hand as he pondered his newfound dilemma. Lightning flashed in the sky, the illuminating a billboard advertising some guy writing in black journal...

And it was at that moment that an idea began to form in his head.

I wonder… How would they react if I put the power of DEATH into their hands? What would happen? After all, DEATH is the ultimate test of character…

Yes, that was it. He would put the mortals of this city through a trial, and study how they reacted. He would test them with the power of DEATH. To do this, he would have to turn his soul log into something of legend… Something that had not been used in a while. He pulled out a pen as black as night and opened the black notebook and began to write. The rubies set in his ring began to glow, as he channeled the power of Death. When he finished writing There was a flash of light, and suddenly he was holding three black notebooks in his hand: one to keep for himself, and the other two to each become the device of legends.

He placed the original book back into his robes, then scratched the Roman Numeral I onto the cover of the second notebook, and the Roman Numeral II into the third. He opened up each book, exposing the back of the cover, and carefully wrote the words that would give these books the power of Death. His ring glowed with the power, as he finished the writing.

When he was finished, he smiled in satisfaction as he looked over his own handiwork. The words DEATHNOTE were elegantly spelled out in bloody red ink, with the rules and instructions written below. The humans were going to love this.

He pocketed the second DEATHNOTE, he would keep it until the time came to give it to someone else.

LET THERE BE MURDER AND MAYHEM!” The Shinigami roared in a great voice, as he raised the book above his head, and with tremendous force he threw the first DEATHNOTE into a random portion of the city.

There, a random mortal would find it, and take it unto himself…
…And the fun would begin. The humans of this city would soon be tested beyond their wildest dreams, as the power of Death reigned among them. What would happen? He did not not have the faintest idea, but it was sure to be…interesting.

The Shinigami named Durzan laughed, as lightning struck across the sky and the rain seemed to renew its deluge. He was going to enjoy this.[/hide]

    A NIGHTMARE HAS BEEN REBORN!

All actions in game are determined by the shinigami rolling a 20 sided die and adding any modifiers to the role, and must be PMed to the Shinigami. The Shinigami also reserves the right to shake things up and make things interesting.

When signing up for this game, please post whether you want to be a civilian or an investigator, then send me a PM with a name with which you wish to use, as well as potential motivations for being Kira. (It shouldn’t be related to your actual name or personality, and do not share this information with anyone else, as it is important to the game.) Everyone has hidden their name to act as a defense against Kira’s ability to kill people. After all, Kira cannot kill someone whose name and face he cannot identify... right? Kira is required to use a player’s “real name” in the DEATHNOTE in order to successfully kill them, thereby limiting Kira’s power.
If you are interested in playing Kira, then submit a sample kill as well, and I will consider you for the position. L will be chosen randomly from the starting investigators.
One person is chosen as Kira, who’s job is to kill off all the original members of the Investigation Team. Kira can kill people once every two days, and can add any amount of detail to the death. The catch is that since everyone is using fake names (your username), Kira must first find out the name of the person he wishes to kill. Kira is a hidden role, and can either be a citizen or an investigator, and gains all the rights and privileges associated with the role. See the Kira section, and the rules of the Deathnote for details.
Everyone else will be either investigators or citizens. Citizens have the right of choosing sides, and aiding their respective side to victory however they can. Investigators are given the job of investigating crime scenes and capturing Kira. Because of their police training, they receive a small bonus when performing investigations. See the respective section for details.

The Shinigami is basically a Grim Reaper. In this game, he is GameMaster, NPC, and Referee. It is his job to run all the stuff that goes on in the background and to determine what the heck happens in each game. All actions a player wishes to make must be made through him via a PM. The Shinigami reserves the right to alter the game to make things more interesting. All decisions in the game that are made by the Shinigami are made by a d20 dice roll and adding any modifiers. If there are any penalties that would make your roll go into a negative it will automatically be set as a 1, and if there is any bonuses that would make the roll go above 20, it will stay at 20. As for the specifics of successes and failures that's for me to know and you to worry about.
⁃ Murder Attempts - To further protect the identity of Kira, any deaths carried out by any person's own means (without using the death note) must also be carried out by me, the Shinigami. IF YOU WISH TO PHYSICALLY KILL SOMEBODY FOR ANY REASON, YOU MUST PM THE SHINIGAMI.

Kira is a serial killer bent on killing all those opposed to him. By using the DEATHNOTE to pick off the other players one by one. Kira’s motives are currently unknown. His goal is to kill off all other players that are not aligned with Kira.
    • Kira may be either a civilian or an investigator.
    • If Kira dies, then the Investigators win.
    • Kira must follow all rules of the DEATHNOTE (See the DEATHNOTE rules) and must make at least one kill every 5 days, or else Kira will die.
    • Kira has the option to taunt the investigators via a global announcement with every kill he makes. Use this to advance the story, and keep things interesting.
    • Kira can choose one person to be an accomplice. This person becomes Second Kira. Kira should be careful as to who is chosen, as Second Kira isn’t necessarily loyal, and could easily attempt to betray Kira at any moment. Kira also reserves the right to kill Second Kira and replace them with another Second Kira, but can only do so once. If Second Kira defects, is captured, or is killed by any other means, then Kira looses this right.

The Fake Kira is a person chosen by Kira to be an accomplice, and if necessary, a scapegoat. Second Kira’s job is to aid Kira in murdering people and to divert attention from Kira for as long as possible.
Second Kira must adhere to the rules of the DEATHNOTE, or else will die, and cannot kill on the same day that Kira kills.
Second Kira reserves the right to attempt to betray Kira by turning in his DEATHNOTE to the investigation team, or commit suicide using his DEATHNOTE. If Second Kira chooses to commit suicide by DEATHNOTE, then he must follow the standard rules for using the DEATHNOTE.

Investigators are those whose job it is to deduce exactly who Kira is based off of the killings and actions of Kira. These are the people that Kira must kill in order to win the game.Just about anything a civilian can do, an investigator can do as well.
Because of their training Investigators gain a static bonus to all investigations of people and crime scenes (+2 Bonus).Investigators have also received defensive training in case someone tries to murder or torture them. As a result an Investigator has an increased chance of escaping and/or killing their would be captor/murderer, should such an attempt be made. (-2 to the person attempting, 60% chance of Captor’s death.)Investigators are given the right to throw people in jail by popular vote. The person is determined by a popular vote in the thread. (See the rules on Voting and Jail.)
For Every 3 DEATHNOTE kills, the investigators vote on a person to execute. The person with the most votes is then axed off.
Every 5 days, Investigators will add a civilian to the investigation team, at which point the new Investigator gains all the rights, privileges, and benefits of being an investigator… However, their alignment stays the same as they were as a civilian..

Citizens are the common folk. They cannot participate in votes, save in the case of ties and the Endgame, and have no special bonuses as a result of their role. They can however perform most actions, such as investigations or torture. At the beginning of the game, they are divided as evenly as possible into two groups: Those who support Kira, and those who support the investigators. Please PM me your preference for your allegiance; however there is no guarantee that you well be put on your desired side, as I will try to make the division as close to 1:1 as possible. Whichever side you chose to align with is the side that you must stick with; if that side turns out to be the victor, then you win as well.
Those who support Kira must follow any instructions given to them in Kira’s Announcements. If a Kira Supporter is recruited by the investigative team, then he is not a required kill for Kira, and will retain the right to kill on Kira’s orders.
Those who support the investigative team can lend their aid to one investigator of their choice, by PMing the name of the investigator he wishes to help to the Shinigami. This grants that investigator a +1 bonus on all of his roles for as long as the Supporter is aiding him. An investigative supporter can only aid one Investigator at a time, but can change the person he gives aid to once per day. Note: If an Investigation Supporter is chosen as the Second Kira, they can either keep it and do Kira's bidding and renounce their role as an Investigation Supporter, or announce to the Investigative Team that they were chosen as the second Kira and give up their Death Note.

: There are two DEATHNOTES being used in this game; one is in possession of Kira, and the other in possession of Second Kira. Each Deathnote can be used to kill one person every two days, and there cannot be more than one DEATHNOTE kill in a single 24 hour period. This means that Kira and Second Kira can alternate kills, each killing one person every 48 hours. You may add details to the death, but you are limited to what is humanly possible, and you must know the REAL NAME of the person in order to have a chance of killing your target, but you can try to kill them using the alias if you wish. (You will most likely fail without the target’s real name.) In the event of a failure, the events that were written in the DEATHNOTE transcribe as normal… however, the events are altered in such a way so that the person survives. If a DEATHNOTE kill miraculously fails, then Kira can choose one additional target to attempt to kill that day instead.
In order to find out someone’s real name, Kira or any other person must successfully manage to investigate a person, although it isn't necessarily going to come out in one investigation attempt. In addition to evidence, you may slowly be able to find out more detailed information about the player. Pieces of critical information, such as who they are, where they came from, more specifics about their personality, possible motivations for being Kira, etc. This information could be important...
Kira’s first kill must be a person who is not actually playing the game, so that all players have a chance to do something before their death. The person can be someone on the MG or can be completely made up (an NPC).

Investigations: An Investigation is any action that is taken to search for evidence or clues. This includes searching a crime scene for evidence, having a suspect shadowed, raiding a persons house, interviewing witnesses and/or suspects, searching other places of interest, etc. PM the shinigami about your attempt to investigate, and be specific.
Note: Tortures, whether successes, failures, or even those resulting in the torturer's death, CAN NOT be investigated. Civilians can investigate as well, however they do not have the special training, and as such are more likely to fail.
Crime Scenes: Sometimes not all information is revealed about a deathnote kill or any other homicide. At any crime scene, there is only a limited amount of physical and/or circumstantial evidence that can be collected. Therefore, for every 2 investigations that takes place at the crime scene, a cumulative −1 penalty will be applied to any additional investigations.

For some reason, you may decide that you wish to do a fellow player in. Whether noble or depraved, you attempt to kill them by your own means. Any deaths carried out by any person's own means (without using the death note) must also be carried out by me, the Shinigami, in order to protect Kira’s anonymity. Shoot me a PM containing the details of the death, and I will post a variation of it into the thread when I have the chance. Whether or not these deaths are successful is determined by the Shinigami. Note: For every murder attempt you make, you will receive a cumulative −1 penalty to any additional homicide attempt. This penalty is reduced by 1 for every death that occurs since your last Homicide, that you were not involved in.

Torture: To receive additional information, a person could kidnap and torture another person. The would-be torturer would be masked to conceal his identity, do what he could to extract his information, then knock the victim out and then throw them back into the street while remaining completely anonymous. PM the Shinigami the name of who you wish to torture, what specific information you are trying to get out of them, if you are looking for specific information, and HOW you wish to torture them. I will then make a decision on how well your torture attempt goes and post the result in the thread for all to see. The results depend

Life Saving: If someone is suspicious enough to where you believe someone is about to murder them, a civilian has the ability to save their life. This is done by PM'ing the person whose life is to be saved to the Shinigami. The success of this is determined by the Shinigami. If no outstanding death threats have been made on the chosen person, this action will fail and could possibly result in adverse effects.
Anonymous Message: If you wish, you can address everyone anonymously by sending a PM to the shinigami with a message containing no more than 150 words. The shinigami will then relay the message into the thread, without revealing who wrote the message.
Other Actions: The rules for actions other than those listed above are determined by the Shinigami and the player on a case by case basis. PM the Shinigami your action, and I will determine the result and either send you a reply or post the results in the thread, depending on what is most appropriate.

Jail: Crimes committed will net people jail time if they fail and/or if you get caught. The jail time for each crime committed is 1-2 days for Civilians and 3-4 days for Investigators. Those in jail cannot make any action, and may only post in the thread once per day in orange until their jail sentence is up. Leave all inappropriate stuff to yourselves, please. The Shinigami reserves the right to jail anyone that they believe is being abusive, annoying, or otherwise trying to screw the game up for other people.

Ghosts: If you died, please post in red… and for crying out loud, you are not allowed to discuss any vital information relating to the game. However,as a ghost, you can influence the game to a certain extent. If you wish, you can choose to haunt a single person of your choice by sending the shinigami a PM about who you wish to haunt. A haunting lasts 48 hours, and during that time, the haunted player receives a −1 penalty to all rolls. (I mean, think about it, seeing a ghost is most likely going to unnerve someone.). A living person can only be haunted by one ghost at a time. While haunting someone, you can basically troll them by sending short messages and stuff to them via me. I will forward the messages to them, or post them publicly for all to see. DO NOT SEND THEM ANY CRITICAL INFORMATION, although you can insight a bit of paranoia if you want to.This is purely to allow a ghost to have a bit of interaction with the game still, and to allow them to “mess with the character’s head.” Because of this, the Shinigami reserves the right to alter and/or disable this rule as he sees fit. Please don't use being dead as an excuse to goof off; either be a productive dead person, or don't post.

    The End Game

The Endgame begins when the following conditions are met:
    If Kira is still alive.
If the previous kill has reduced the total number of living players is less than or equal to 1/4 the total number of the original number of players, OR if there are 4 or less of the original investigators left alive.

When the endgame starts, all actions cease, and Kira cannot kill anyone else. Everyone’s name is revealed, and each player is allowed 24 hours to write one last post to make their case. If you have any aces up your sleeve that you have not played yet, then now is the time to do so. Once that 24 hours is up, then all remaining players vote publicly on who they think Kira is. In the event of a tie, the civilians votes are added to the total. All the investigators get one vote, but Kira and Second Kira’s vote do not count. The poor unfortunate soul who receives the most votes then is executed brutally, as everyone turns on him. If the person who is killed is Second Kira or an innocent Investigator, then Kira wins. If it IS Kira, then the investigators win.

Whether Kira won or not, at the end of the game Kira gets a score based on the following:
-5 points for choosing a Second Kira.
1 point for every civilian killed by the DEATHNOTE.
1 point for every kill made by a Kira Supporter.
2 points for every dead investigator.
5 points for each creative, gruesome, or hilarious DEATHNOTE kill written by Kira or Second Kira.
6 points if Second Kira dies by the DEATHNOTE. 8 points if Second Kira was executed by the investigators. 10 points if it was as a result of the Endgame.
10 points if Kira made an epic speech at least once in the game. 25 points if it involves a swimming pool, gumdrops and ice-cream, a bikini, and a donkey. (This will change from game to game.)
1.2x Kira’s score in points if Kira survived to the Endgame. 25 additional points if Kira won the game.

    Crime Scene Investigation:
⁃ With each investigation, more information at the crime scene is lost. For every 2 investigations made at a specific crime scene, a cumulative -1 penalty is applied to all rolls afterward.
⁃ 10 or less: Trivial or useless information is revealed, if any is revealed at all. Evidence may or may not have been destroyed (50% chance that crime scene is purged of all remaining evidence, thus making any further investigation attempts automatic failures.)
⁃ 11-15: Investigator is able to determine general clues on the cause of death, if applicable, or general information about the crime scene that may or may not be useful.
⁃ 16-18: Vauge information is gathered that may provide clues as to who the killer is.
⁃ 19-20: Specific information is revealed that gives specific information on determining who the killer is.

    Shadowing:
⁃ 8 or less: No useful information is discovered. (50% chance of getting caught, or discovering false information… reroll and make something up based on the roll… except: 10 or less: Investigator gets caught.) Target finds out you were shadowing him/her, or you gain some false information..
⁃ 9-12: Investigator discovers some general information about the subject, such as who they have been shadowing recently, and/or their potential motivation for being Kira.
⁃ 13-17: Investigator discovers the person’s real name, and finds out about any crimes the person committed during the last 24 hours.
⁃ 18-20: Target discovers vague information that may indicate the person is aligned with Kira or the Investigation Team.
⁃ 21 or Higher: Target is confirmed in their role.

    Torture:
⁃ No matter what the dice roll is, anyone that attempts to torture Kira forfeits their life. In the event a victim is the Second Kira, then there is no possibility they will tell the torturer Kira's identity.
⁃ 8 or less: The victim breaks free and the two would fight. The confrontation between the torturer and their enraged victim would have a 50% possibility of killing the unfortunate torturer. In the event that the victim is an investigator (and the torturer is a civilina) the chance increases to 60%, but if the opposite is true, then the chance is reduced to 40%. If they are both citizens or investigators, then the chance remains at 50%. If an investigator is tortured and manages to overpower and kill the torturer, then it doesn't count as a murder attempt.
⁃ Roll 9-12: No useful information is revealed.
⁃ Roll 13-16: Some minority useful information is revealed, such as vauge hints at what they were doing or what they found out during the last 24 hours
⁃ Roll 17-20: The target reveals some obviously useful information.
⁃ 21 or Higher: Target spills critical information, such as the real name of an investigator or citizen that they have successfully investigated.

    Homicide:
⁃ Life Saving: In the event someone chooses to try saving the life of the victim, then the hero takes the effects of the kill, while the original victim gets away with a 50% chance of seeing the killer.
⁃ 5 or Less: The would-be killer dies in the murder attempt and fails to kill his target.
⁃ 6-10: The victim manages to escape. (50% chance that Victim recognizes the attacker.)
⁃ 11-18: The killer successfully kills his victim.
⁃ 19-20: The killer has time to clean up some of the evidence. (-1 penalty to investigations of the crime scene.)
⁃ 21 or Higher: The killer manages to clean up a good chunk of the evidence. (-2 penalty to investigations of the crime scene.)

    Kira:
⁃ Cannot be tortured or killed via homicide, and anyone who does so will die.
⁃ Receives a +2 bonus on investigation attempts. (Increases to a +4 if Kira is or becomes an investigator.)
⁃ Anyone who investigates Kira receives a -2 penalty to their roll.

Fake Kira: The Fake Kira is a person chosen by Kira to be an accomplice, and if necessary, a scapegoat.

    Investigators:
⁃ Receive a +2 bonus on investigation attempts.
⁃ Anyone who attempts to torture or kill (homicide) an investigator receives a -1 penalty to their roll.

    Kira Supporters:
⁃ Receive a +1 bonus on torture and homicide attempts if they know the target’s real name.

    Re: Idea for Mafia variant

I only read the intro so far.

    Replace [hide=intro] ... [/hide] with (SPOILER=Intro) ... (/SPOILER). Square brackets ofc.

    Spoiler : intro :
just testing that I'm not saying bullshit

    Also check this.

Ok I skimmed through it and from what I can see:
    - You are basically hosting a game.
    - There's way too much technical info about how the game works and what not, but not laid out well. I can't be arsed to read through it.

    So...
Try to make it more readable. Use some text formatting.

And yea.. Look into Forum Mafia. Although you could also host this under the Puzzles section I guess.
