The answer could be obtained by comparing red and 27, black and 29, blue and 40. such as (R = 18 ) + (E = 5) + (D = 4) which all adds up to 27! The pattern was A = 1, B = 2, C = 3, D = 4 so on and so forth for the rest of the alphabet. The total number of pupils wearing green coats was 49. G = 7, R = 18, E = 5, E = 5, N = 14, all totaling 49!

Well, I dunno about how many green coats, but I know there are 72 pupils that wore malachite coats, which is one my favorite shades of green.
