    Town Of Salem - Kickstarter

    Hello everyone,

I am pleased to announce the creation of a stand alone Mafia game called Town of Salem. It is currently in alpha testing and includes many of the roles and features we all know and love from SC2 Mafia. DarkRevenant has joined the project and will be providing creative and design decisions as the game progresses out of alpha and into a fully functioning game. There are some differences between the two games but anyone that is a fan of SC2 Mafia should like the direction this game is going.

With the game being a stand alone it opens up a lot more possibilities for what can be done with the game. Any support we can get is greatly appreciated. You can support by sharing with your friends or pledging to the Kickstarter:

    https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/.../town-of-salem

Even pledging a dollar helps to make this game a possibility and there are a lot of cool in-game rewards that are unique to the Kickstarter.

Thanks everyone and have fun playing Mafia!

Question - this isn't going to be on facebook right? Is it going to be a standalone game? Not a facebook app?

It is a stand alone game. We use Facebook as a convenient login system to save achievement progression.

So someone without a facebook account will have to register to play?

Correct for now. There will be other ways to login in the future. Do you think the community has a large amount of people without facebook accounts?

My best advice to Town of Salem devs is controversial, but never the less what I think is for the best. (And from what I've discussed and hear from others in lobby as well)

Please DO NOT listen to feedback from long time members of this community!!

Make your own game(!), start your own forum, and start collecting fresh feedback from those who are genuinely interested in this new game, and it's success! ...I beg you!

You will quickly notice that too many people here come from a Forum Mafia, or even EpicMafia backgrounds, OR some have been in SC2 Mafia from the very beginning, but gradually stopped playing as the game expanded and started to become unfamiliar.

Secondly, this game and forum is run with a 'Pay to Say' principle. People with good suggestions are asked to pay("donate") for privileges to express their suggestions in a VIP forum, or they wont be heard. Payed users are elitist and ignorant towards new users and their feedback (EDIT: See the guy who replied me, I rest my case).

Just go and read some of the game suggestions on this forum and see how poorly everything is received. You will quickly realize how unfriendly and un-constructive this forum is. You will see no progress here. It's no coincidence that after months of development, one of the first roles to be added in a long awaited update, is the Stump, a role for the admins to troll those who haven't payed ("donated").

If you eat too much of the their feedback (the same ideology that has been preached around here for the last couple of years), then you'll quickly end up with a dumbed down slow-mo game like EpicMafia, with 3Citizen, 1 Sherif, 1 Doctor and 2 Mafioso's and last can last 40+minutes, because 3 clueless people can't decide who of the them unchecked, sounds least trustworthy.

This is not what you want!

You want to make mafia cool, new, fresh, smart, fast and accessible! Reinvent the classic mafia game for the 21st century!
Let people play with their friends without SC2.
Let people experience the core concept of lies and deceive, for the sole purpose of having fun.

I would even go so far as to not try to familiarize it with "Mafia" at all:

What about a small town with Bandits (instead of mafia)?
What's wrong with a werewolf role?
Make a new universe for your game!

I repeat, don't take this place too seriously. If you feel something is simply not fun, don't add it to the game, or change it, or come up with something new. Watch yourself around here!

I do however have faith in ToS and Dark.Revenant being on the project.
The consequences of his occasional absence from this forum, only goes to show how important he is for the health of this game.

This post will likely be hidden by admins, it's their place after all.

    Peace out!

You have some good feedback or ideas in your otherwise long post here, but starting your post with this was really really unneeded.

I do not see how this is a negative thing. Getting view points from many kinds of players can be good, it is then up to the developer to decide on what he wanna do with said feedback.

If you look at SC2Mafia, it has become what it is because of it's players.
    • The SC2Mafia players don't like Citizen? Then allow them to exclude it.
    • The SC2Mafia players don't like Mafioso? Then allow them to exclude it.

Sadly most of the SC2Mafia players all want shiny buttons to click at night, and the whole mind game at day is mostly reserved for trolling.

I think this problem came to be mostly because of how the SC2 lobby system work. You click a "play" button and you get thrown into a game with random people, some want to it fast, some one it slow.
There are so many different play-styles that can be used in this game thanks to it's customization options and setups. But blindly throwing everyone together is a horrible idea, but this cannot be changed it a good way for SC2Mafia.

A thing Town Of Salem could really benefit from would be a better "find game" mechanic. Something like a list of games or game types, like a special category for people that don't mind playing with Citizen/Mafioso, and a category for people that don't like them.

That way we don't have too many players of different play-styles in one game.

This I have to agree with, I have talked about this somewhere here or maybe it was on Skype.

Renaming the "Mafia" faction to something more suited for the current art style would help a lot with the theme confusion. "Bandits" is a good suggestion for this, my first thoughts were mostly "demons" or "monsters".
And if "Cult" are planed, they could be renamed to "Werewolfs" maybe.

Urgh, I hate Facebook. I really don't want to use my Facebook to play the game.

But I am really glad someone is finally making a stand alone game. Perhaps it will end up on the Windows store?

Love it, just looks a little childish to me, the graphics and cartoons. I like it being all Serious. Hopefully you will make a mafia theme for it ^^ And cool Characters.

Also, since your working with D.R. does that mean we get point transfares? O:-) (I can dream)

And are all the houses/characters obtained by points?

Also does this have any relationship to: Attachment 10930

Atmosphere (music, lighting etc) could have a huge affect on even cartoony games.

As for the point transfers, this is just speculation but I highly doubt they will have comparable point systems. Also as far as I'm aware our mod team is uninvolved in Town of Salem operations.

All houses, characters and maps (yes you can choose different towns) are currently free except for the ones unique to the Kickstarter pledges. Transferring points will likely be impossible since they are different achievement systems.

That is definitely something that will be added. As it's alpha right now we are just running with the bare essentials. Also if DarkRevenant recommends some honorable moderators I will highly consider granting them moderator status in this game.

There is. Citizen is more important to Mafia than any role other than Mafioso. Having auto confirm roles, as well as 0 chance to implement a Citizen to give scum a place to hide behind... Basically unless there are 7+ Neutral Benigns the scum have a 0% chance of winning in any game.

    No citizens = broken game.
Experiments a few months ago showed that if town all reveals d1, scum have 0% chance of winning when there are no citizens. It's just because people aren't smart enough to realize that in sc2 and don't do it.

Citizen is THE MOST IMPORTANT ROLE!

Yeah multiple logins are currently setup for the Alpha. It makes testing easier while there aren't many users playing yet. This will be disabled soon. As for the afk host, being able to repick the host is a feature that will be done soon, sorry about that.

I'm actually surprised that this was playable on your iphone. To my knowledge smartphones use flash lite and I didn't think it would work. How was it? Is the UI readable on that tiny screen?

I paid 4.99 for web browser a long while ago that support flash player, its hard and laggy, its still readable and playable, but the screen doesnt fit when you hold it normally, you have to hold it sideway
The keyboard is annoying in that web browser

Yeah the game currently supports a minimum resolution of 800x600, which should cover almost everyone. Smartphones are a bit too small though. I think it would work on a tablet though with that app.

Re: Town Of Salem - Kickstarter

Anyway, to actually comment on this project, I'm gonna say that it goes a bit too far in making mafia more accessible and "fun". The changes to town roles really cripple them while at the same time harming the team-play aspect of the town. Doctor being able to heal himself to prevent random heals on N1 is kind of silly, since the doctor can just choose not to heal anyone or to heal someone if they want to take that risk, and the point about saving his heal for when he reveals is moot because everyone's a power role, so it doesn't matter much who the mafia targets. Jailor's privileges being removed after executing town makes it rather difficult for him to do anything, and punishes players too harshly for common mistakes. Vigilante committing suicide after killing town accidentally does the same, and actually harms town because they lose two town players instead of one.

Not adding cits is also a really terrible idea. It basically means that the mafia does not have to put any thought into who they kill because no matter who they hit, it'll be someone important. Not to mention balance issues with everyone being a power role and degradation of team-play because most people will either have means of directly gathering info or directly influencing game mechanics. I've always hated the power role orgies in SC2 Mafia, and this only looks like it'll be worse.
