You wouldn't steal a car, so why steal movies/music/games through piracy?

If my neighbor owned a 2013 Challenger and I could steal it, but it would still be there for him in the morning to drive to work in, I'd steal the hell out of it. He probably wouldn't even make it back from the lot without me stealing a copy of his car.

Why is piracy such a big deal? I mean, why (in America anyway) give more jail time to "internet pirates" than rapists?
Why do media companies, game companies in particular, insist upon counting every instance of piracy as a lost sale? I pirate games because I can't afford to buy them and because they're not worth giving your greedy ass company as much as you ask for them, not because I'd just rather not buy them. Don't flatter yourselves, very VERY few games are actually worth 50 bucks.

For instance: Blizzard games tend to be worth the asking price according to the pirating communities. You can tell because you still can't pirate and play Diablo3. You say it's because you have to be connected to Bliz server to be able to play it. Well, the PC version of Assassin's creed: Revelations had DRM which required constant connection to UBI's servers to be able to play it. Guess what? I had a playable pirated version 3 days after release via a server emulator which would trick the game into thinking it was connected to the proper servers in order to operate.
I think piracy is a natural part of a self-regulated market which only showed and became popular because people realize that games and movies aren't worth the amount of money we're all asked to pay for them.

    Thoughts?

I'm pretty sure D3 was deemed universally shitty when people said how shitty it was ingame and how it was pretty much completely abandoned in less than a month

    It's a 5 hour game, that isn't worth 60 dollars

You're arguing against my point to a certain extent, but you're not saying anything worth while because you still have yet to explain how your point is valid in light of the facts I've brought up.

Think of the immense worth of money hollywood (or any movie/gaming/computer software company) would lose if:

a)Their product is sub-par, and the pirated version is 3X better
    b)Their product will cost you.......$300.

Obviously, the best thing the company can do to raise profits in this situation is to:

1)Lobby congress to pass laws like SOPA and PIPA (And kill off companies like Google as a bonus)
2)Lobby congress to lower taxes+subsidise on them (In this budget crisis!?[Ans: Fund republicans instead])
3)Hire black-hat hackers(or companies) to DDOS, hack and basically make problem website into crap.

Re: You wouldn't steal a car, so why steal movies/music/games through piracy?

As i know piracy is considered "bad" because :
I'm a producer , i'm spending money on this product ( generic means for "films, vidoegames and stuff" ) .
When i will selling he i want get some gain .
But a person , after took my product , he duplicates my product and he sell it for free on the web , that's isn' t right because , with a expense of a person , other 30-40 persons have it .
Teorically is a free advert , sounds like "hey , look, this thing is so good thath did bad drafts full of crap !" and the persons obliuvsly will came for get it , right ?
Nope , the first pirate did advert , but when a better pirate will make the pirated version flawless & downdolable with light hearth , i will lost cash because , at this point is "look , choose from free game and spend 25$ " , the result is obvious and i only lsot cash form did it .

With stealing, you're taking a physical item from the owner.

    Stealing =!= Piracy
Stealing ideas and information is still stealing. Add in counterfeits.

Stealing national/military/corporate secrets, stealing personal data. Heck, no harm done. Digital format!

Stealing does not always mean taking a physical item. Stealing a car is different from "stealing" information. It's bad use of the word "stealing". A better word would be plagiarism.

Meta-critic is unrelyable and bad for the gaming industry, some companies go as far as not hiring devs that have made games with 74 instead of 75 as score.

I think "copying" would be a better term to describe it
also, can you imagine competing with:

    Game costing $0
Freeware game being constantly upgraded by 50+ppl working for FREE?
Upgraded cracked game? (Major bug fixes, for example..)

im a member of the digital age, i believe the internet should be free, and anything related to the internet should be free, ill share, just agree to ask for it first. i support all sharing and never having to pay for anything online.

i believe the reason people "steal" is because no1 will ever know they stole it, and no one will ever care that they copied it. if the artist/orignal poster never even meets the person who stole their music/item then they should have no reason to try and take back what "isnt missing" all that useless data to make up a song.... simply cant be stolen, only mass produced and spread. if anything he should be happy that so many people like his song

And now he's homeless on the street because he didn't get any income from producing his song after someone else took it, mass-produced and distributed it for free without giving credit to the original author.

No one knows he wrote the song, and he can't even afford food, but hey, atleast a lot of people like his song, right?

If he's homeless, then he should be happy to have thousand of copies of his song on the internet. That's a great way for him to get a job.

Because the artists that are "stolen" don't need it in most cases. If you want to get a song of the band of your University, you buy it. If you see a little concert, and really like it, you buy the CD afterwards, cause there is almost no chance to find it on the internet.

But if you "steal" an album from Nicki Minaj, David Guetta, Jay-Z, Madonna or One Direction (God helps you), who cares ? They sold millions. They get millions for their concerts too, cause people are ready to spend 100 dollars to see them. And they are paid when they appear on TV. And they get money from the advertisement that appears before their Youtube videos.

People that should complain about the piracy aren't the ones you hear whining.

And he was presumably betting that his song would be so famous that people would actually buy it in the first place.

Also, how can he be homeless when the technology(read:cash) required would mean that he actually gets a home before he starts selling songs?

Back on topic: Companies try to suppress every free and mashed songs because they run the "risk" of a lost sale.
Oh, and the bonus money you can from a successful sue against someone with a low-end lawyer happens to be a bonus ..
